@ nexialys

nexialys 10-11-2007 01:58 PM

yeah, i know i'm an idiot... but if you can't use your own msn/yahoo/aim system to chat with the same 4 people all the time, maybe you need to review your needs... and your ways of talking with people...

adding a chatbox for only 4 people on a software like vBulletin is a loss of time... you would save bandwidth and webspace if you use an existing IM...

You never stated whether you wanted a free or commercial solution nor did you thank nexialys for giving you sound advice. I would list a range of products that would help you but I simply cannot be bothered to help you out because I'm lazy and think that your an idiot.

nexialys 10-11-2007 02:15 PM

Ok Sorry Guys

iogames 10-12-2007 12:42 AM

Back to the issue: www.v3chat.com ;)

smacklan 10-12-2007 12:47 AM

If you want something inexpensive that will integrate with your vbulletin user database and forum, try www.flasherize.com

theFAILURE 10-12-2007 01:59 AM

Install a shoutbox in the admin forum, or moderator forum.

Marco van Herwaarden 10-12-2007 05:16 AM

My Advice: use IRC.

We do the same for our staff here on vb.org. We have 3 (well more actually) chat rooms in IRC for vb.org:
- 1 for general public
- 1 for our moderators (not accessible for any others)
- 1 for our admins (not accessible for any others)

Hardly any costs and no influence on your server performance (if you just use an existing IRC network).

Freesteyelz 10-12-2007 06:10 AM

PJIRC has a version that integrates with vB. I've been thinking about trying it out for a new site. Though, for administrative stuff we use the voice chat Ventrilo. :)

I like your style :)

Can we keep this thread clean please and stop referring to other members as "idiots".

Be careful calling that "integration". It gives you an easy path to the irc server and automatically uses your forum username but it DOES NOT register you with nickserv on the irc server (I'd go on but you probably already know what that can cause. ;)). For true integration you'd need your own irc server and the ability to sync up accounts between the forum and nickserv.

Ah the joy of teaching newbies irc commands. :)

Shelley_c 10-12-2007 11:02 AM

I don't think anyone would find the nickserv or chanserv commands very hard to use or get to grips with. If I'm not mistaken isn't irc and running your own server on your host server intensive? maybe I'm mistaken.

Marco van Herwaarden 10-12-2007 11:13 AM

No it is not very server intensive, but most people wil just use an existing network nad will not go install an IRC server on their own server. Most hosts will not even allow that.

You'd think so wouldn't you? People seem to go dumb in the head when they are forced to learn commands. I've had to walk some of the moderators through the process so many times that sometimes I question weather irc is the right tool for the job -,-.

What I've done is attempt to get these guys on a more "point-and-click" (user friendly) client. There is a good one for the MAC but I've yet to find one on Windows that fits the bill. Until then I'm forced to walk people through the process as the other admins just love to point people that are confused in my direction. :(

Freesteyelz 10-13-2007 03:24 AM

While some of the people I'm surrounded by are well-informed, I'm IRC newb. :D

And Brad...Get on the PM. ;)
