Popup ads from www.questionmarket.com?

Someone reported ads that popup on our forum that come from www.questionmarket.com.

Has anyone else seen anything like this? It has only been reported once, by one user, at the moment. I am seeing if anyone else has experienced the same issue. The person reported it runs a Mac - so odds of it being malware are very low. We run version 3.6.7 ... and I don't see any critical updates that were needed. Please let me know... sounds fishy, I thought I'd post here.

Thanks -

Please provide a link to the page (and if needed a test login) where this popup is showing.

Hi Matt

We've just dissabled all external ad networks (apart from adsense) due to this being reported, and no matter what we did, we couldn't stop it.

I would be very interested in any information regarding this.

This is very strange ...

SDB,

What version are you on?

FYI, I did have more reports of other users seeing this. Very very weird, and partly bothersome.

I'm going to do some more investigating. Meanwhile, please let me know if you find anything else... and if anyone can provide some insight into this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone -

I did a database dump and searched for the two types of ads that were reported... I found this:

INSERT INTO `vb3_word` VALUES...(568422,'questionmarket'),(568423,'questi onmarket.com'),

And, INSERT INTO `vb3_word` VALUES ...(568015,'slide-in'),(568016,'&quotsurvey&quot'),(568017,'safecoun t'),(568018,'safecount.net')

The latter, safecount, says it's a survey and it's a slidein ...

Anyone know anything about this vb3_word table? I grepped the code for it and I am trying to see how it's used... it may simply be that people mentioned these words in a post (which they did)... I'm kind of leaning towards that. And two cents appreciated.

I did just confirm vb3_words is the table to assist with searches ... so, I guess that's no insight on what I found. Still looking. Thanks

To get help on this, you might start by answering the question in post #2.

SDB 08-25-2007 11:22 AM

Marco

This isn't appearing on specific pages from what I can tell.

Matthew

What ad agency code are you using?

We've been using :
valueclick / vcmedia
tribal fusion
adsense
burst

it may be that its one of them spawning a pop up, although we religiously dissable popups in the various control panels.

Any more news?

MatthewG 08-25-2007 04:51 PM

SBD, I'm sorry... I was just told people saw them at http://linuxforums.org/forum/ ... but, I haven't seen them myself. Then it dawned I have adblock ... and even after browsing forums for 30 minutes in Opera, I still didn't see anything.

Thanks!

SDB 08-25-2007 04:53 PM

Matthew

Do you run any of the above ad networks?

I have just dissabled them all apart from adsense.

Simon

MatthewG 08-25-2007 04:59 PM

Hm, where in the admin panel would I see that? Someone else admins this board as well, and I'm not too sure.

I know we don't manually have the slide in ads that we're seeing, so it may be some javascript from something else... if I could only grab the page source when I see it.

Thanks

SDB 08-25-2007 05:02 PM

What I mean is.

Are you serving banner advertising from any of the above ad networks, apart from google adsense?

It may be that this is just malware, which it appears it may be.. but why people on our site should suddenly start reporting it (and many saying it only appears on our site) is confusing.

MatthewG 08-25-2007 05:12 PM

SBD, whoops, I missed your message and got confused. heh, my bad.

Anyways, how would I know if we're running ads from those networks? I didn't put them there, and I'm not too sure where to look in the admin panel. I know we have Google adsense, but I can't seem to find anything else.

And it's not malware, the person who reported it said they were on a mac... and, well, mac's aren't so vulnerable to malware... so I'd imagine it's something else. I'm guessing it's some third party serving it, but I can't figure out which one, and I can't seem to see the same page with ads as they are reporting.

SDB 08-25-2007 05:20 PM

whoever sets up your ad networks will know whether you're running these.

This is the absolute first place to look.

There isn't a specific place to look in the admin panel, as all ads including google are added as a bespoke.

Please let me know once you've spoken to the person who deals with your adverts.

MatthewG 08-25-2007 05:26 PM

Ah, I see. I was afraid of that. eg. ads are stuck in random places all over the forum or something. Ok, I'll find out and get back to you.

Marco van Herwaarden 08-25-2007 05:30 PM

The only real way to find out why these ads show (unless it is a local problem from 1 user) will be to inspect the source of the page that triggers them. So the first step is going to be to find out on what page and under what conditions this is triggered.

SDB 08-25-2007 05:32 PM

agreed marco

this is easier said than done. With xx,xxx users a day, getting them all to remember to view "page source" when they get the pop up, isn't straight forward.

I spent a couple of days chasing one pop up which turned out to just be a banner advert that somebody thought was what we call a pop up.

MatthewG 08-29-2007 08:16 PM

SBD,

Curious ... did the ads randomly go away? I'm still trying to find out what ad networks we have...

But, in th meantime, I don't see any other reports of users seeing them... hmm.

MatthewG 09-07-2007 09:33 PM

FYI, the two ad networks we have are google adsense and IntelliTXT. Although, I haven't seen any further reports of these ads...

SDB 09-08-2007 09:24 AM

Hi Matthew

We do not run intellitxt (out of interest how is that working out for you?), but we do run adsense.

We were running a number of others, who we've now removed from the site, and I've had no more reports either.

Basically we're no nearer to working out what caused it, but its looking more and more likely that it was something on the client side.

MatthewG 09-08-2007 08:26 PM

I *highly* doubt it was on the client side, only because the person who reported it was running OS X... still very strange. Anyways, at least it's gone now. :)
