Search For Unanswered Threads By Forum

Hack Support

This hack is now discontinued - this means that while it will remain available for download and use, there will be no further updates, nor will support be provided as the thread is no longer monitored. But not to worry, you can now check out the new 3.8.x version of this hack which will work with v3.7.x, as well as with v3.6.12 (and maybe even earlier versions).

Please click Mark as Installed if you are using this hack.

vBulletin Version Compatibility

This hack can be used with both vBulletin v3.6.x and v3.7.x.

What Does This Hack Do?

This is an hack adds an extra option to the Search this Forum drop down list in forum display, that additionally allows you to search for unanswered threads by forum (including child forums if enabled). This can be useful for example, if you have some of your forums dedicated to support issues and want to filter by unanswered support threads, just in that forum (and child forums if enabled).

There have been a few threads that mentioned template edits for allowing to view all unanswered threads in all forums (not like this hack which is by forum, not the entire site), vb.org uses a variation of that template edit. This hack is different, but based on the idea, and allows more control over the results.

There are no file or template changes at all, and is phrased.

AdminCP settings for this hack available in vBulletin Options > Search For Unanswered Threads By Forum.
Settings that can be changed are:
  1. Usergroup permissions - which groups will be able to use Search For Unanswered Threads By Forum
  2. Search child forums - enable/disable
  3. Turn off cached results - enable/disable
  4. Search Text For Auto Template Injection - leave alone unless you know what you are doing. But if you need to manually edit the FORUMDISPLAY template because the auto template injection does not work, you will need to use the contents of the UnansweredThreadsByForum template to do so.

Installation Instructions
  1. Import product-jd_20070818.xml into vB using the AdminCP Product Manager. If upgrading then set Allow Overwrite to Yes.
  2. Alter the settings in the Admin CP to your liking.

Version History

v1.1.0 - Tuesday 25th September 2007
-- Final Release
-- Fixed: Usergroup Permissions

v1.0.0 - Saturday 18th August 2007
-- Initial Release

Very clever! nice work.

great i will install it later

projectego 08-18-2007 09:00 AM

[high]* projectego clicks install :)[/high]

FractalizeR 08-18-2007 11:24 AM

It would be good to have a capability to search posts, where latest answer does not belong to thread starter or to specific user group. It is good when there is a group of support staff is responsible for answering user's tickets (I use VB as a ticket support system).

bazzup 08-18-2007 02:45 PM

cool handy for for viewing our ringtone requests

installed

PepiMK 08-18-2007 03:11 PM

I already had something similar on our forum: a fixed search query added to a menu, just using the following link:
Code:

search.php?do=process&replyless=1&replylimit=0&exclude=30&forumchoice[]=NN
With NN being the ID of the forum to look for this.

Anyway, your mod with customizable access rights is so much better :)

One question though: how do you define "unanswered threads"? Just by "zero answers" like my simple attempt did, or do you recognize threads where the original poster has just pushed his question as well (aka: all threads where no one but the OP has posted yet are unanswered)? That later one would be a really cool feature if it isn't in there yet!

nnjj.net 08-18-2007 07:35 PM

is it working on 3.6.8?

giza 08-18-2007 10:09 PM

KoC 08-19-2007 12:49 PM

Not working on 3.6.8

PepiMK 08-19-2007 01:00 PM

Well, for me it is working on 3.6.8 ;)
Have you all taken a look at the AdminCP options? You need to set up which user groups may have access to it.

redlabour 08-19-2007 04:40 PM

Sure - but it is still not working.

Fraxter 08-19-2007 10:38 PM

It should work for your site, but if want me to take a look then feel free to PM me your site address, an admin user, without these I cannot help you. [S]I will look when I have time, and even if I have a look, I can not guarantee that I will be able to fix it as your site are not English (I do not read/write in Turkish), so it is up to you what you want to do.[/S]

You have both extensively modified your FORUMDISPLAY templates which is why it is not working for you.

This was created in v 3.6.8, so does work as long you have not heavily modified your style. You will have to look at this hack and work out how to make this work yourself.

[S]Alternatively you can click Mark as Installed, and if you want me to take a look then feel free to PM me your site address, an admin user, without these I cannot even attempt to help you. I will look when I have time, and even if I have a look, I can not guarantee that I will be able to fix it as both of your sites are not English (I do not read/write in German or Arabic), so it is up to you both what you want to do.[/S]

Thanks for the compliment :)

It is very similar to your link code. I count unanswered threads as zero answers (ie a thread with no replies).

I like your idea with a thread with only the original thread starter and his bumped replies are the only posts in the thread, I may well look into seeing if I can implement that, but it would be released a different hack if I can work out how to do it. I will let you know if I do make it :)

Fraxter 08-20-2007 10:58 AM

Sorry it works 100% with 3.6.8!

Brew 08-24-2007 12:02 AM

This isn't working for my site either, running 3.6.8

What is the link that is supposed to be shown in the search box, I'll just add it manually.

Thanks!

You will need the contents of the UnansweredThreadsByForum template for that.

Mosh 09-25-2007 09:07 AM

Update : Version 1.1.0 - Fixed usergroup permissions problem.

LadyRed 09-26-2007 05:34 PM

Working fine with my 3.6.8

SHalliday 09-30-2007 03:27 AM

Thank you very much for creating such a useful addon :) Installed

Just wondering if there is any way to omit (soft) deleted threads from the search list or is this something you might consider adding in a future release?

perfphysio 09-30-2007 01:06 PM

Great Mod. Every admin person should have this

Not at the moment, but will look into it :)

The Realist 10-09-2007 09:45 AM

The links not showing under my search box as well, so how do I add one?

Removed until I find a fix.

Solution is in step 4 in the first post:

4. Search Text For Auto Template Injection - leave alone unless you know what you are doing. But if you need to manually edit the FORUMDISPLAY template because the auto template injection does not work, you will need to use the contents of the UnansweredThreadsByForum template to do so.

[S]Alternatively you can click Mark as Installed, and if want me to take a look then feel free to PM me your site address, an temp admin user (with permissions for managing products and editing templates), without these I cannot help you. I will look when I have time, and even if I have a look, I can not guarantee that I will be able to fix it, if your site is not in English (I only read/write in English), so it is up to you what you want to do.[/S]

WORKS WITH v3.7.0 Beta2

member007 12-18-2007 03:51 AM

The "Unanswered threads" is not in the regular vbulletin search menu, it's in the "Search this forum" menu when you click on the forum you are searching and it's on the right hand side.

Mosh 02-07-2008 06:07 AM

Search For Unanswered Threads By Forum for v3.7.x is available here.

Mosh 09-03-2008 04:24 AM

NOTE: This hack is now discontinued - this means that while it will remain available for download and use, there will be no further updates, nor will support be provided as the thread is no longer monitored. But not to worry, you can now check out the new 3.7.x version of this hack, as it also works with v3.6.10 (and maybe even earlier versions).
