Anybody in a REAL rush to update to 3.6.8?
I will wait....i'm nervous..lol i have all these mods installed!!

I upgraded my board without any problems earlier today. Took all of a half hour thats including updating my templates I had to revert and re-edit.
|
Its just like a regular upgrade, you do have alot of mods :o
|
I'm not in a huge rush to update, I'm guessing another update will be out soon.

I'm in no rush to update really :) |
no rush... :) I think I will just wait for vb 4.0.0.1
|
Hell...I am still running 3.6.5. I got vBulletin right before the last mad rush of updates and by then I already had installed a bunch of modifications. The whole upgrade thing scares me....I need to learn more about vbulletin before I upgrade.
|
Upgraded last night. Took an hour. 3 templates modified, like 5 or 6 not so heavy plugins installed. Works like a charm.
|
I am in no rush myself :D
|
i am waiting for sm 5.9.9 or may be higher :D
|
Do you have to turn off the board in order to do the update?
|
If you are worried about losing your whole forum backup your whole forum - The main things that will be gone when you upgrade is the image folder, you should not overwrite this file when you upgrade. I made that mistake and I had upload my backed up image folder. Also, be sure to back up the xml in your include's folder, you will have to re-upload that as well.
Other than the thing things that I mentioned the upgrade went really smoothly for me. I had a lot of mods as well as template changes. The template's code is in the database so when you overwrite your files, they will ask you revert them after upgrading. (You can refuse to revert of course) |
I have about 2 times that amount of mods installed :/
and I have several templates (3 unique) and I upgraded and it took me about 20 minutes in total. Just use version history, I had to change 11 templates on each skin, didnt take long at all. |
My rule of thumb is this...
Backup everything prior to the upgrade... Then when you FTP the new files only overwrite files (NOT folders) this way you can ensure you're not overwriting something in a folder that is part of a modification you've added... When adding images check vb.com to see which images have changed and which are new. If you are using a custom style only add the new images.... Lastly, compare the new template with the modified templates and make any changes needed. With the new plugins and products you should really one have 3-10 templates to change/update. If you have more than that I would bet there are little to no changes if you check the updated modifications... ;) This is my method and it works well for me... ;) |
I updated two forums last night. Only took a few hours

And an equally large thumb. :p
|
nope, i scanned the changes and they dont seem that vital. (no security fixes i'm aware of) as such i'm just gunna wait for more versions or until the vb blog comes out.
|
i still see people in 3.6.0..i'm like atleast i'm 3.6.7 lol

As for the update, there's generally no reason not to, as I upgraded without even disabling the modifications, and nothing went wrong while upgrading or has gone wrong so far as a result of it. And this was not just minor stuff, but full Interactive Profiles + Shoutbox + Arcade + Shop + Points System + Bank + a lot of other stuff which cannot be named. |
I have about 30+ Mods Installed and I did the upgrade to vB 3.6.8 the other day. Went super smoothly and all still working at 100% ... I say upgrade ... It only took me bout 20 Minutes to do it and that included manually changing the Templates that needed "Revert" as they are Customized ...
vB.com gives you a list of the Files that have changed since the previous version of vB that was released. So in order to upgrade all you really have to do is overwrite those files via FTP, then run the install/upgrade.php and your done. No need to replace ALL the files on your Server with the ones from the Zip File, just replace those that have changed since the last version of vB (these are stated in the corresponding thread over at vB.com) ... The way I see it, if it hasn't changed, why would you overwrite it with a new one? Just takes more time and might make you loose some Modifications when replacing them. I only had to edit the member.php file from vB 3.6.8 as I had to add the iTrader edits, besides that, all the other files did not need editing. |
Oh, and by the way (I know, not relevant but useful for those with customised boards), if you ever have trouble with images being overwritten, simply extract the images that were not in the prior release, then delete the rest of the image folder.

I wish that I didn't Upgrade :( since I mistakly reverted all templates and lost all mods. plus here are list of my problems:
1- Some usergroups when they send PMs, it get delivered TWICE to the recpients, plus it's saved TWICE in the Outbox. 2- The quick reply box get expanded and the text in it truncated in the view (only the right side of it). 3- Advanced reply box became verrrry small in width. :( |

I find if I don't upgrade I get hit by more spammers and hacked into. Does this happen to anyone else?

F.S.A, If you did a Backup before the upgrade like your suppose to just go back to your previous vB version (hopefully it was vB 3.6.7 PL1) ... Then just go into the "vBulletin 3.6.8 Released" Thread over at vB.com and look at those files that have changed since the last version of vB. After you do that, upload those files to your Server via FTP and those files only. Then run install/upgrade.php and you should be fine. Make sure that before you overwrite any files via FTP that none of your Mods have any edits in any of those, if a certain Mod/Hack you have installed has an edit in any of those files, do the edit before overwriting it (ie: I had to add the iTrader Edits to member.php before uploading it since it was a file that changed from vB 3.6.7 PL1 to vB 3.6.8) ... If you do this, you will have everything fixed and will be good to go.
Also, DO NOT revert your templates on your Customized Styles. Go in and take a look at those that need changing. Compare the codes in them via the [View History] link and add/remove the code that needs to be changed, that way you can keep all the customizations and all the mods you had before ... Its all pretty easy once you get the hang of it ... I really dont understand why people complain about upgrading, I know it might be time consuming, but its not really that hard and you dont have to loose anything you have added as long as your catious (or unless vB changed dramatically and a Mod needs to be ported over to the new version) |
What I do is always export a SQL backup of my current forum, install it locally on my home server, then upgrade locally. If all goes well then I update it live.
But nah I haven't installed 3.6.8 yet. Probably will soon though. |
^ That's a really, really good alternative ... I like that one , when i get a home server I'll be keeping this idea in mind, thanks man :)
