Low cost servers with high bandwidth

Hello pals,

Im looking for a "low" cost server that allows me to deliver big ammounts of data transfer. I'll be basically using this server as a download server, so I can releave my other servers for mysql, images and php processes. So this server wont need to be running a MySQL server or anything, possible just php.

I am looking for at least 2TB bandwidth and 100/200Gb storage capacity.
Let me know if you find something like what I am looking for.

TECK 07-23-2007 04:45 PM

For what you need, there is no such thing as "low". Try iweb8.com and their un-metered servers. Their data center is very clean. Prepare yourself to pay at least 500/month. Since you need to release a lot of data, you will need ultra fast drives, so the price will go higher.

COBRAws 07-24-2007 02:47 PM

I know there is no such thing, i really dont want to pay for an unmetered server because Im not quite sure if I am going to use it au large.

Thanks for the tips tho.

scoutz 07-26-2007 11:59 AM

you don't really need a server with 'ultra fast drives', you could try http://fdcservers.net/ it's shared unmetered bandwidth but you should be able to push 5-9TB/month or for a server in the EU http://www.leaseweb.com/index.php?p=dedicated

Honestly, getting a "low cost server with high bandwidth limits" basically means 1 of 2 things (or both)
1) They oversell
2) they are a very crappy host

Usually the more expensive it goes the better it is, but I would still look into the host, get background information etc before you make the plunge

that's why this user asked here actually...

Yours 07-26-2007 07:19 PM

All you can really do is google the site and its statistics and such

COBRAws 07-26-2007 08:05 PM

When reffering to low cost i am thinking about 150$ as base, does anyone know servers with unmetered dedicated servers and how much this unmetered connection cost?

encryption 07-26-2007 08:49 PM

dedicated 10mbit unmetered connections alone can start around $130 / $150. They could go in the thousands for 100 mbit dedicated port connections

nexialys 07-27-2007 12:27 AM

unmetered == capped ... 100% of the time...

COBRAws 07-27-2007 05:50 AM

I just found out about a good solution for my problems at my current host, liquidweb.

Im gonna upgrade to a quad server with an unmetered port
i would be just paying 200usd more than now,not that much. around 500usd total

gforce75 07-30-2007 08:38 PM

I was lucky with http://dreamhost.com because they had a "555" deal when the had 500,000 customers. My hosting was only 69 bucks, 5 free domains, 5.2tb of bandwidth, 500gb of space, and they don't screw you over on mysql connections. See if the code still works. I host tons of domains with them and 0 down time, fast support.... just happy with them (was going nuts with powweb).

keharris53 08-01-2007 03:07 AM

Take a look at ait.com.

gforce75 08-05-2007 06:35 AM

Nope, no joke. I can post you my stats if needs be :p

Brandon Sheley 08-05-2007 06:38 AM

I've been happy with www.fluidhosting.com
I don't have a sever yet, but the vps is reasonably priced, and they offer excellent support.

I just had like almost 1 full day of down time with them.

I can vouch for the total HD space and bandwidth, it is a riidiculous amount.

While I don't rely on my sites for livelihood, it still does suck when they have gone down. It's not often, but I don't know of any service that is 100%.

Do you have a small board or big board?

Dreamhost is a pain if your serverload is high

peterpigman 09-18-2007 08:42 PM

I'm using a netfirms clusterered server. It took about a week to get it running ok as the support isn't exactly a1 but it is pretty much sorted now. http://www.netfirms.com/enterprise-hosting/ not a bad price for the bandwidth etc.

mhackl 09-20-2007 03:54 PM

I changed to Netfirms Enterprise One service and it cured all of the problems that GoDaddy said was Vbulletin's fault. Very satisfied so far.

Dankness 09-20-2007 04:34 PM

I've been using Knownhost for about a year now and have to say they have the best support team around. They specialize in VPS servers but have good reseller plans too. I highly suggest them

Knownhost Plans

lighti 09-21-2007 11:23 PM

Well we charge around .30/cents a GB for dedicated bandwidth. If we put you on a 100mbit port you can expect to get 100mbit if you need it, not bursts but constant. We offer bandwidth separately priced for .30/GB or in bulk at 140/1000gb. Thats dedicated bandwidth and not oversold. Its a mid range price for premium bandwidth. If you want to run some speed tests send me an email I will send you a link, (not sure if im allowed to post it here) steve@lighti.net is my email.

Id bet the shirt off my back if places are offering you 7402343209 gbs of bandwidth is highly oversold, and they do not guarantee your speeds or ability to push that bandwidth. They offer that amount because they know the majority of people will not come close to pushing that much bandwidth doing legal stuff. Unless they run a HUGE site.. Even a forum for 10k members will be lucky to push a terabyte a month.. So when buying bandwidth and connectivity you have to decide which is more important to you. Quality of the bandwidth or amount of bandwidth. If you running a popular forum, id suspect you would want the best quality because your members want the site to scream, they dont want pages to take forever to load. They want keep coming back if the site constantly is lagging.

It seem to be a inexpensive hosting plan.
How about the speed connection ?
I am in Asia, I concern the connection speed .

dedicentral.com is a good server provider i use them have no issues they also offer free billing software and support software ;) if you need it

gforce75 10-08-2007 04:37 AM

Well, if your board has high demands, you can always add the PS support option to your current plan. Check there stie for more info. Start with your forum @ best and when it encounters issues, just upgrade to the PS plan which acts like a VPS. You maintain all your own bandwidth. The PS gives you protected processors and RAM to your current package. What I like is you can always keep uping that amount of CPU access and ram that you need. If you add too much, you can always bump it down @ anytime.

Laterz.

Oh, for another 10 bucks a month, dreamhost will give you now like 10TB of bandwidth and a 40GB bandwidth increase a week!

Concerning your message, here is a test link. I've downloaded at 900kbps many times.

http://myffnet.com/forum/downloads.p...id=18&act=down

It's a FF MP3 i put up for test. Enjoy!

Oh and they just added a new option for 10 bucks a month, you get 10TB a month with a 40GB growth every week.

The part that kills you is if you overload the cpu. DL's do not affect that. Insane blogs and insane forums will do that, but now they have this cool option on top of every host of a PS package where they dedicate ram and processors to your package, so you maintain the 10TB of bandwith. It's like a add vps to a shared package. They have a 97 day guarantee, so it's worth a try. I'm a happy customer :p

dont forget, that most US based people who live in an area where business class Verizon FIOS is available should consider an affordable in-house solution for medium and smaller boards.

You can get a Dell PowerEdge 2900 with a dual Quad Core Xeon 3.2, 8gb of RAM, a very nice 1TB SCSI Raid5 array, 1 year RedHat Enterprise subscription and a warranty for just under $8,000 USD. That may sound high, but consider what you'll pay over teh course of one year.

Verizon FIOS business class costs just under $200 a month.

lighti 10-14-2007 03:40 AM

You can get that same server from a dedicated provider for 380/month. So why pay the 8k up front cost? If your still paying 200$ a month for verizon you should just get the dedicated.

It would take you: 44 months to pay off the 8k investment. and in 44 months im sure there will be a new server you will want..
