Windows Vista is a piece of...

(I posted this on my own site but I thought I'd post it here also)

Windows Vista is a piece of...

Ok, there I said it. Windows Vista is officially a piece of crap, IMHO.

Here's the story: I was running a 2 year old machine in my office and here was it's specs:

Intel CPU 3.6 ghz EXTREME Edition
ATI 850 video card
2 gigs of ram
2 Terabytes of hard drive storage running on Raid 0

ON this ^^^ machine, I purchased Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade. Cost me $259. After installing it, I noticed that it was roughly 1/2 the speed of Windows XP Pro, IF NOT SLOWER. After going through every performance tweak I could find, I finally gave up. So being pretty pissed off, I then purchased an ENTIRE NEW SYSTEM.

It's specs currently are:

Intel Quad Core CPU (FOUR processors in one), not 2 but 4, there isn't a faster computer available right now.
Gforce 8800 GTX 768MB
video card
4 gigs of RAM
3 Terabytes of hard drive storage running on Raid 0

I actually bought a new machine in HOPES that VISTA would run faster!!. I figured by buying a new QUAD CORE (computer with FOUR processors) would help it's slow down issues. This last weekend was the last straw. I like to do allot of video editing, every time I loaded up a video of ANY SORT into ANY VIDEO program(Premier or even WMP), the system would slow down beyond beleif, to the point of having to restart the system.

So, I consider myself a computer expert and in this case, pretty much a Windows Expert, a definite POWER USER of computers. I reverted BACK to Windows XP Pro. Going backwards sucked hardcore and was very difficult to do, took me hours. there are many things I hated about Vista and will not be touching it again any time soon. In fact, I've decided that my next computer will prolly be a 8-core or quad-core Mac Pro workstation, but am waiting for the OS Leopard to be out for a year or so before I jump.

Don't jump on the amd vs intel bandwagon either, I installed it on another AMD system last week and still, slow as hell.

Hail to MACS

theFAILURE 06-21-2007 04:35 AM

You can probably run a Mac OS on that pc if you like.

Lizard King 06-21-2007 04:46 AM

I also had a similar exprience. Now i am back on linux again. No way i'll come closer to vista again.

Dismounted 06-21-2007 07:42 AM

Intel 2.8 GHz CPU
ATI 9800 Pro
1GB RAM

It's running fine, even under stress.

cyberphr 06-21-2007 07:51 AM

It came on my Acer, it's terrible.
Welcome back to Gentoo! :)

06-21-2007 07:57 AM

Must not like you,

P4 3.0
1.5Gb ddr ram
2 Sata drives (1 terrabyte)
Runs vista ultimate faster then it did xp. Initially sound never worked but a update fixed that, Same as the onboard nic (whole system except hdd & ram is 3y/o)

The laptop (Amd dual-core 2.0, 2gb ddr2, 160gb sata, 256mb video, 17 wide) Runs premium perfectly

Both pc's, I run resource intensive programs all the time..
Eg: Cs2, Macromedia Dreamweaver + FlashMX at the same time, While surfing the net

Also play Half-Life2 at 1680x1020 (20 inch samsung wide monitor) without glitching or lag

sunilvarma 06-21-2007 10:11 AM

This is kinda weird. I run a PentiumD 840 - dual core 3.2GHz processor, 2GB ram, GeForce 7600GT grafix card, 300GB HDD.

I never had a problem with vista ultimate. It never slowed down that much even when running photoshop or other intensive programs.

The only problem that made me return to XP is that my soundcard company hasn't yet released drivers for vista.

TTG 06-21-2007 10:54 AM

Running Vista ultimate on Athlon 64 3400 .. 2 gig ram .. Radeon 9800 XT and it runs a lot faster that XP Pro.
Photoshop opens twice as fast.
Halo 2 even runs better in Vista.
No complaints about Vista

Guest210212002 06-22-2007 02:37 AM

My brand new, 4GB 3400 runs great on Vista.

...Other than superfetch, explorer and a myriad of other windows services crashing for no reason whatsoever at least twice per session.

Vista is the worst OS I've ever used.

rjmjr69 06-22-2007 03:04 AM

I love it. Just upgraded to Ultimate from Home Premium and its amazing. Nothing about it is slow. The Dreamscene images that come standard are full or errors. But I have a brand new
Toshiba Satallite
2 core 2mhz
2 gig ram just ordered 4 from NewEgg
256 mega Shared Video
200 gig drive

You must have had a bad piece or two of eq that didnt like playing nice.... Sorry to hear that.

popowich 06-22-2007 03:30 AM

If you pay extra Dell will give you Windows XP

You can send me those old systems then as mine won't even run XP. LOL

margerine_12 06-22-2007 04:39 AM

That's sorta' funny, mine run wonderfully on my old computer

(1 gig of ram, Radeon amd x300)

Calash 06-22-2007 05:52 PM

Quad Core is not the same as 4 processors

That being said I never really pushed my beta of Vista, however the resource usage was quite high....Aero is just a pig.

Been running Ubuntu for months now with an XP VMWare session and Cedega/Wine for my games. A bit of a challange now and then but the system is very stable and quite fast.

G0F0RBR0KE 06-22-2007 06:04 PM

God, your computer must hate you.

I'm running at least 504 MB of Ram and yet I'm running Window Vista. Not to mention it runs smooth.

I'm going to get a 2GB worth of RAM later on.

You can probably never imagine the perfonmance difference i have between any linux distro and vista.

derekivey 06-22-2007 10:48 PM

Vista runs great on my computer:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
2 GB DDR2 800 RAM
GeForce 7600GT
250 GB SATA HDD

Ronak 06-23-2007 01:49 AM

look @ my pc..its slowest of u all..but Vista runs perfectly in my PC

AMD64 Athlon 3000+
512 MB RAM
80GB HDD
GeForce4 MX4000 128MB Graphic Card..

Vista runs absolutely fine in my pc

Norco 06-23-2007 02:53 AM

Im running Vista Ultimate on a pc with 80gb hard drive, 2gb ram, Pentium 4 processor which was designed for XP, and it works very well. I haven't had any issues with my performance levels. The only thing I somehow manged to disable it from recharging the battery.. so to use it I have to plug it in every time. I have been using it for 3 months now too. The only thing I don't like is some programs aren't compatible with the graphics (areo) and boots it out to the old looking theme. But I haven't had any other compatibility issues, it runs smoothly, and I am a hard person on pcs!

But, when leopard does come out, I am migrating over to a macbook pro. Apparently everyone says to stick with a top of the line macbook because the pros over heat and such. I leave my computer on all day usually.. so it needs to withstand being on! I leave the laptop I am on now on all the time, so that would be a must. I personally thing mac is the way to go.. you can simply run bootcamp on it and access any windows program available.

Good luck with your next computer!

This is truth.

PennylessZ28 06-23-2007 02:02 PM

From the people I hear are having bad slow downs with Vista, they have something misconfigured or are simply doing something wrong. Or it's possible that your hardware vendor, has supplied you with bad drivers. There is also the case of the BIOS.

On notebook review, there was a bios update for some hp's lately that caused vista to move at a snails pace, hp was quick to fix this with a new bios update however.

Just some food for thought.

Runs faster on my 1.8ghz Turion 64 ML-34 with 1gig than XP ever did.

nexialys 06-23-2007 02:43 PM

actually i think that Vista was not developped with the latest up-to-date computers, they started developping it years ago, so i'm sure that even if you have a 1 or 2 years old computer it is supposed to work if well configured...

a lot of tech sites are talking about different ways to configure your Vista, so i suppose it is not related to the release itself but the way your computer worked in the past and have to be "edited" to work properly now...

Kihon Kata 06-23-2007 03:30 PM

I guess I'm just used to SPEED. Vista didn't deliver speed, just slowness comparatively speaking. XP is running nicely. I can actually get some sheet done.

Glad it's out.

bashy 06-23-2007 08:37 PM

My Vista is puka, Just installed ultimate 64 today but was running ultimate 32 and there both just as good as each other, Only gone to 64 to see if there is any difference and my cpu is a 64.

I have found the Vista knocks the spots off XP, been using Vista for the last 4 months or so!! Will never go back to snail XP lol

Razasharp 06-24-2007 02:01 AM

I had ultimate installed on a test machine and liked it, so bought Home Premium 64bit for my own PC. It runs great and I prefer it tons better than XP.

I have a C2D, 2GB ram, 320GB partitioned SATAII HD.

It looks great on my 1920 x 1200 screen :D not to mention they've paid much more attention to the usability side of things. Oh, and it's more secure (well at the moment anyway).

Yaayyy Dell. Wouldn't have anything else. But vista sux. Used it for 2 weeks, and went back to XP.

unenergizer 06-26-2007 12:04 AM

I use Windows Vista Home Premium and it works perfectly on my computer. I had to make a few network modifications to open up ports for faster downloading etc.

My Specs:

Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard Company
Model: m8020m
Raiting: 3.4
Processor: Intel Core 2 CPU 6420 @ 2.13GHz
Memory (RAM): 2046 MB
System type: 32-bit

LukeFX 06-26-2007 09:39 AM

Get a grip, I run Vista on a 1gig 4.2 AMD dual core and its spot on, miles faster than XP.

bashy 06-26-2007 02:56 PM

pmsl.... hey luke, i noticed the edit to your post pmsl.....
"miles faster than vista" lol i saw it :p

Anyway, i have now put Vista 64 on but not noticed any difference..
Prob cause all my proggies are 32 bit pmsl....

RichieBoy67 06-26-2007 08:23 PM

I have been using Vista on 2 of my systems for months and I absolutly love it. It is the most solid operating system I have ever used and it is much faster and has way more features than anything else.....

It took a month or so for me to get used to it but once I learned all the added features and creature comforts I just fell in love with it....

I honestly cannot understand why you would have such a problem with it.. I truly believe it is a problem with your system, drivers, hardware or some software you have. If it runs slower than xp something is wrong and it is not Vista.... Vista is way faster than xp on both of my systems and I have tested it using various programs... It manages memory better and power too..

I would go over your system and try again. Format the harddrive and start clean. trust me, it is not Vista. Once you have it working correctly I bet you that you will not want to use any system without it... Man it is so awesome... networking, security..... everything....

Good luck though.. must be some incompatability somewhere...

Well Vista is great, but if you don't have plenty of cpu power and ram, then I wouldn't suggest using the Aero transparencies. On my machine everything runs great. The only problem I had at first was restricted download speeds. I'm not paying what I do on high-speed internet to have restricted and slowed downloads. Anyways, this was easily fixed with a patch I found highly recommended on the net. I have all the same great features of XP and then some. If any of you have tons of software installed on your computer than you might like the new organization of the start menu. It's uncluttered now.

I also haven't had any problems with games either. I have been able to play most games with max graphics and game performance.

I guess I'll wrap up and say Vista has been good to me so far, but who knows what will happen. It's new!

LightScribe 06-30-2007 10:44 AM

Microsoft is going to need some ice for that burn...

I'm waiting another 12 months then I will buy a new system with Vista pre-installed. That way I can take it back if I am unhappy with the speed.

So you're letting Leopard to age for a year before you "jump" and yet Vista has been out for less than 6 months and you're judging it before it really matures? Sounds kind of hypocritical.

On another note, I too think vista sucks. I have a 8800gtx, 2gb ram, but a celley (until the q6600 drops in price) and it's no where as smooth/responsive as XP, with and without aero (tried windows classic theme too).

Not to be a complete prick here, but first you declare:

So, I consider myself a computer expert and in this case, pretty much a Windows Expert, a definite POWER USER of computers.
Then you make statements such as:

I reverted BACK to Windows XP Pro. Going backwards sucked hardcore and was very difficult to do, took me hours.
Quote:

.. which completely undermine your previous declaration of being "a computer expert". There's much more to building PC's than putting pieces together in a lego fashion. There's firmware upgrades, BIOS configurations, RAM timings, etc.

This is by no means a pro-Vista post, as I know better than to migrate to a pre-SP1 Microsoft OS and then complain about it. In the end, your post comes off as nothing more than pro-Macintosh propaganda.

Just to let YOU know, I don't own any MAC or APPLE products, only PC based systems.
