A new feature for installed/updated/downloaded
I would like to mark an addon as "Under Review". This means I have downloaded it and am reviewing it but haven't installed it on a live site yet. This should show up as a section for my "Installed" addons and show the author that I have it but isn't a true install.
So basically instead of a boolean status it would be a triple flag of "under review/installed/uninstalled". |
That sounds like a terrific idea....

Sounds interesting... So there would be a new link under (or above) Mark as Installed called Under Review? I wonder how many people would bother to use that.
And the Under Review count would show in the first post of the mod, that's how I can imagine it. |
Just click install, really.. its what i do.. i doesnt kill you to click install when you didnt accually install it, if its good enough for you to consider, its good enough for an install point to go towards the author.
|
I second this as well. Good idea right there, Wayne!

I'm not really sure how this differs much from simply downloading it (for review, future installation etc) - the status will be 'Downloaded' until you install it (or if you don't, it will not show the downloaded tag after 30 days have passed). The only real difference is that you need to view the downloaded mods rather than the installed mods link. The author of a mod can see if you have downloaded it, but not installed it, in your postbit in the thread.

Paul really could just change "Downloaded" to Reviewing and it would change nothing.

UltimateOreo, i prefer Downloaded since i am not accually going to "review" something am i.. i just downloaded it and im considering it. But even if there is a hack i dont like, ill click install if it tempts me abit so i get notified of any updates. |

Unfortunately, I don't see anyway to get rid of the downloaded tag or to remove it from my UserCP when I am done with it. Was thinking of a way to organize what is being user where on this site. I download a lot of styles and addons but some of those don't even get to a stage where they are installed on a test server for a review, let alone make it to a live environment. |
You can get rid of the downloaded tag (before the 30 days) by marking it installed and then uninstalled. BTW, there was a bug dating from May 27th that ment some mods did not show the downloaded tag when they should, that has been fixed.

There is nothing wrong with the Downloaded tag, it is exactly what you want, but a different word, i prefer Downloaded then Reviewing, Reviewing sounds so classic and Downloaded sounds so new :) |

Double posting, imo means two posts from the same person next to each other in a short amount of time. Its just annoying and pointless and displays the lazyness of a person.

I personally think that a "review" option would be a great organizational tool for the members.
Especially if modifications under review didn't drop the review tag until it is either it was installed or manually removed by the person reviewing it. This tag should also allow you to receive update notifications. There are many times I watch the progression of modifications especially when there are a lot of initial bugs or it is the beta stage and I think this would make it a little easier to do just that....... |

I have to agree with dyna88, having a review option that gets you email updates would be interesting indeed. Usually you have to mark as installed when reviewing a mod for that reason.
|
I can see what you mean, but such a feature would require some more re-writing so it's not likely to happen anytime soon.
|
I really dont see why this is needed. If you download and use the hack, click install.
If you download it and don't use it, leave it as install Having it as downloaded status is just like a reviewing tag. If you want email updates just click install. |
I agree with OP. I currently just click install on all mods that look interesting but I do not have installed because I am awaiting for them to mature a little bit. I just use the install option as sort of a bookmarking feature so they show when I do my show installed list.

I have many add-ons under review and will install them when certain bugs are fixed or a promised upgrade comes out. Adding this feature would not only be handy for webmasters to overview the mods they are hawking, but it would also point out which defunct/unsupported mods are on the watch list of vb.org members.
It may also show coders more functionality is wanted / something needs to be added if a lot of members have their add-on on their watch list, but do not install it. |
If you want to know when fixes have been made click install. It wont do you any harm. If you end up not using the hack, click uninstall. Simple right
