Just add that with a navbar link for the UAT link. As for the counter, I'm pretty sure that it would generate a LOT of queries, since unread threads are done with cookies/db marking, whereas keeping a constant list of unanswered threads would basically run the above query every single time someone posted.

The one that you are showing is an older hack. If you want to use that one, you will have to find it and then fiddle around with it to make it work.
