News Reader with RSS Feeds - For Dummies

Please click Mark as Installed if you use this modification >>>>

Seriously, I got tired of trying to figure out how to get the news I wanted on my site that provided the whole story and not just a description or a feed that was nothing more than a ?disguised ad? for another site, so I located a Google Map Reader, acquired permission to use the program and wrote a ?modification for vb.?

Files to edit: 0
Queries to run: 0
Uses Product: Yes
Template Edits: 1

Testing:
I have tested this on 3.5.x and 3.6.x and it works fine on both. 3.5.x users follow this link:

VbGoogleNews 3.5.X version 1.0.2

What this program does:
This is a Google Map with interactive pins on each continent. Access is gained via the navbar.

Usage:
Select the location on the map that you?d like by dragging mouse, click on pin until you locate the exact country, region, local area you desire and the news will appear. Click on article and a new window will display story; members never leave your site.

Changelog
v1.0.1 working version
v1.0.2 two minor modifications to adjust width

Since the Reader and RSS Feeds is remotely hosted and they do the upgrades, I can?t think of any improvements necessary, but feel free to make suggestions and/or provide file(s), translate to another language, whatever!

Provide a news feed(s) and I will get it installed, in fact, we encourage anyone to submit news feeds, but it should be for local news.

thedvs 04-23-2007 12:42 PM

can we make it a little wider?

lefthome 04-23-2007 12:45 PM

It's at 680px now. What did you have in mind? :)

*edit*

By the way, making that change is really easy if you would like to do it yourself.

Admin CP => Styles & Templates => Style Manager => Edit Templates => Googlenews

Find:
<script>setTimeout('hmap(680,500,0,0,0,0,0,10,0,1) ;', 100);</script>

Change the width and/or height as desired. They are the first two numbers in brackets: 680 (width) 500 (height).

Tralala 04-23-2007 11:47 PM

This is sweet!

The sidebar with the news doesn't appear in Safari (Mac OS X.) Hopefully you'll be able to fix that?

Fungsten 04-24-2007 12:53 AM

I'm installing it on my test board!!

On Edit:

I set it up and got nothing. I'm a noob, do I have to do something with the RSS Feeds also? I don't have those working.

I called this News Reader and RSS Feed for Dummies for a reason so we don?t have to do squat other than load the hack. The rss feeds is remotely hosted, so this has to be an installation issue.

A few step-by-step questions:

You are using vbulletin 3.6.5, yes?
Did you upload the vbgooglenews.php to your root directory?
Did you upload the four pictures to your image/misc directory?
Did you go to your AdminCP => Plugins & Products =>Manage Products => Add/Import Product => upload googlenews.xml=> Import?
Did you go to your AdminCP => Styles & Templates => Edit Templates => Navbar and install link?

If you did all that then there is no reason this program will not work

I don't even know anyone that has a mac so I can look, therefore, I will have to research this question and get back to you.

Fungsten 04-24-2007 01:46 AM

I don't have the four pictures Everything else yes.

Where are the pictures?

Thank you and I should called the pictures .gif files. They are located in the image folder.

imfeelingitdawg 04-24-2007 02:28 PM

Awesome! I love it being a news junkie. Now I can easily catch up on news around the country. One question. Why does the navbar seem to be stretched out longer than the page when viewing the map? It's more of an asthetic issue as it doesn't affect much other than having a scroll bar at the bottom of the screen.

Endurer 04-24-2007 03:02 PM

This is awesome.. thanks man :)

Nominated, installed and rated.

If you would please PM me a link to your site. I would like to look at what you are talking about. :D

Actually the same thing happens on the demo link for the mod. I can make the browser window as large as possible, 1650 X 1050, and I still have to scroll left and right. In other words, for some reason, the navbar is over 100%. Make any sense?

Uncached templates: Googlenews (1)

I also noticed in the breadcrumb/navigation that "Googlenews" is forced to a weird color sometimes instead of reading the proper colors of the style like other areas do...

Alien 04-25-2007 12:14 AM

To fix uncached template, edit googlenews.php

and change:

PHP Code:

$globaltemplates = array('googlenews');

to
PHP Code:

$globaltemplates = array('Googlenews');

Alien 04-25-2007 12:24 AM

...and to fix the second bug I reported:

Edit Googlenews templates, and add:

Code:

$stylevar[htmldoctype]
To the very top of the template.

wilburshere 04-25-2007 01:58 AM

installed love it

thank you

Thanks for pointing those out. I have uploaded a fix for these issues and updated the files for new installs.

SirFlash 04-25-2007 08:31 AM

Works perfectly on my vb3.6.4 thanks!

Fungsten 04-25-2007 06:05 PM

Using v3.6.4 of VBBS with v1.0.2 ....

When importing XML file, I get:

XML Error: XML_WAR_UNKNOWN_VERSION at Line 72

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Badger

Edit: In an effort to see if I could find out what's wrong with importing Line 72, I simply tried to open the XML with IE as I've done with many others. When I do that, it says:

The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

Beautiful mod ! Works perfect with main forum which is installed in a sub-directory.
How to make it work from VBA which is at root?

What do I add where, to get it to open a NEW page instead of opening and replacing the current page?

Thanks
