Modification Archive

Up until now, it has always been vb.org policy to remove from public view any modifications that are classed as no longer available (for whatever reason). This has often lead to comments from members that they can no longer access useful information contained in the modification release threads, and requests for some form of public archive.

We are now pleased to announce that such an archive is going to be provided - the "Modifications Graveyard" is located at the bottom of all the other modification forums and is essentially a read only forum - no posting will be allowed in threads, nor will the downloding of any files still attached to posts be allowed.

Over the next few days/weeks, we will be moving many previously deleted modifications into the archive, so please be patient. Please note however that not all removed release threads will become public again.

Great news, but the reason I always suggested to keep the bugged hacks online was bacause if I didnt keep the zip I was not able to follow instructions on how to delete/remove it from my forums.

If we cant download them, which are the great news about this announcement?

regards,
Jack

Sorry but these are basically deleted modifications - no longer allowed to be available for whatever reason. Most probably don't even have files attached anymore, but if they do then you won't be allowed to download them. That's the price of having the threads made available again.

gg_luna128 04-17-2007 02:38 AM

Excellent decision, IMO.

In my opinion its the same as not having them available. At least vb.org should attach a downloadable file with un-install instructions. Thats the magic of having deleted hacks back in the game.

My 2 cents.

Logikos 04-17-2007 05:41 AM

Having vB.org staff provide uninstall instructions to old hacks is asking for a bit much don't you think? You have any idea how long that would take the staff, and how dreadful it would be on them?

As long as hackers have the option to exclude there own deleted hacks from this archive, I'm all for it.

rjmjr69 04-17-2007 07:10 AM

AWESOME thank you so very much.

Snake 04-17-2007 07:49 AM

That's a great idea, Paul. I doubt that there are still people who are running on a classic vBulletin version, though you might wanna change the archive name to "Modification Archives". ;] Just an ideal.

Kirk Y 04-17-2007 03:39 PM

I like this idea very much, except for the part about not being able to download files attached to posts. I can understand not being able to download the original modification and I agree with that wholeheartedly - that being said, often other users will attach snippets of code or other files that are helpful resources and while, sometimes, they are directly related to the modification that was removed, aren't flawed or contain any kind of security holes as did the original modification.

Just my two cents anyway - but great idea nonetheless.

bashy 04-18-2007 07:54 AM

To me it makes a lot of sense, I have seen many posts with regards to
wanting the modification thread back as theres alot of information in
the said thread/s.

Obviously such thread/s had bee removed in the past for a specific
reason, perhaps the author wanted their hack removed, There was an
exploit and so on.

The staff are doing us a favour here by bring back the threads, so that
we can see the useful information, with regards to the attachments, like
i said the hack was removed for a reason, no point asking for the
attachments back as well, just be grateful the threads are back, I know
i am....

Ps, just seen them, even the 1st post is there, sometimes install/uninstall
instructions are there anyway :)

giovannicosta 04-19-2007 06:42 PM

Great decision :)

pixelpunk 04-19-2007 08:22 PM

I think this is a silly idea. A lot of people have worked hard to make changes and IMO you're just shredding and tossing this work in the trash.

PLEASE keep the files available to download, even if the original programmer doesn't support their product there are still some great mods out there.

Simply put, some of us have the skill to make these work with newer revisions of the VB software and those that don't just don't have to install the mod.

amykhar 04-19-2007 08:25 PM

pixelpunk, the files aren't removed because staff wants them removed. Staff doesn't remove unsupported mods. The files are removed because the author no longer wishes to share them here, for whatever reason.

The rare time staff removes a mod is because it has a security flaw.

seangworld 04-23-2007 07:54 AM

this is slightly offtrack, but apparently a lot of people like to use the 'vb.org' abbreviation and so i thought it'd be nice to spread a 'head's-up' to people that 'vb.org' is actually some religious website and NOT vbulletin.org.

check for yourself: http://www.vb.org
it's Victory Baptist Church.

aight then...

as far as the topic of this thread, i say to just throw anything out that is more than 2 updates old. let's get real here, if you actually bought a vbulletin forum, then you'd spend the extra 30/year for all the upgrades and you'd get the updated mods for it.

those who wont upgrade, more than likely stole it and therefore can't.

that's my 2 cents.

Logikos 04-23-2007 11:48 AM

Its always been a religious website, been mentioned many times before.

bashy 04-23-2007 03:16 PM

The issue is, these threads that are being put back without the attachments are threads
that have either ;
  • The author has asked for the attachment to be removed for various reasons
  • the staff have removed the thread due to an issue with the hack/attachment
the staff are now bringing back those threads that were removed so that we can
use the information within those threads, again the attachments cannot be brought back
for the above reasons.. Hope that helps you to understand it a little better :)

TECK 04-23-2007 09:05 PM

Even with this good decission, there will be people who will complain because they want that deleted hack...
Go figure, either way everything is bad for them.

rjmjr69 04-23-2007 09:15 PM

When will we start seeing the archive?

seangworld 04-23-2007 09:21 PM

i dont see what the problem is, all the hacks are being upgraded in step with vbulletin. keep your forum updated, and your hacks will be too.

anyone here still using dialup aol 2.0 with a 19.9kbs modem? i certainly hope not. it's only 30 bucks a year to keep uptodate. you owe it to your members! and we shouldnt have to sift thru hacks from that era as well. it slows down servers, takes up diskspace.

rjmjr69 04-23-2007 09:54 PM

I found it thank god..... the problem I was having is now solved THANKS FOR THIS

I find that a stupid price..... Makes it almost totally pointless to a certain extent. "Here, you can hear about this really cool device, but we can't show you pics." <--- See, pointless....

I totally disagree with removing the actual file. Some people might use an old hack as a "starting" ground to an new one.... Or just use it to learn. They still have a valuable use even though they are archaic.

bashy 04-24-2007 05:09 AM

Again, the hack removal is either
  • Asked for by the hack author
  • removed by the staff for security reasons
The hacks have not been removed because there old
its cause theve been asked for or the staff felt it safer for you to
have them removed.

Not much more i can say to explain it really.

Marco van Herwaarden 04-24-2007 10:37 AM

Wether you like it or not, a modification is copyrighted to the author, and if he wants to have his modification removed, then there is nothing we can do but to remove it. The thread discussing the modification is however "Public Property" and will be shown in the Graveyard.

Sometimes we even get self important enough around here to just call it 'the org', as if org couldn't be anything but vbulletin.org. ;)
