Most Wanted Feature in the Next Major Release?

Hi all,

what feature you want to see in the next major vB release (maybe 4.x)?

To me, its got to be SE friendly URLs.

share your thoughts... :)

Ziki 04-01-2007 06:10 AM

For me it would be quite a lot small mods like to Disallow members to pm themselves or allow users to report own posts.Such small hacks.

Shazz 04-01-2007 06:40 AM

AJAX it all

I also love AJAX, it eats resources if you got enough of it compared to others though dont it?

It would be nice to see a portal such as vBadavance CMS or what ever.

RedTyger 04-01-2007 08:18 AM

Private messages as threads. I'd do it myself if I had the time and I didn't suspect it was quite a big undertaking.

Luky 04-01-2007 09:47 AM

I really dont see the point/need for that

projectego 04-01-2007 10:50 AM

Option to add rel="nofollow" to any and all external links within threads/profiles with the ability to enable or disable via usergroup permissions.

Staxed 04-01-2007 12:35 PM

add the features of vbSEO :)...that way since it's default...we won't have to figure out which new hack we just installed is messing the SEO up

Luky 04-01-2007 11:16 PM

Zionts SEO seems to work better then vBSEO for me.

magnus 04-02-2007 02:08 PM

Goodbye tables, hello CSS!

You're telling me you paid for vBSEO only to go back to using Zoints? Being as there's no free vBSEO demo ...

Luky 04-02-2007 02:36 PM

Uhh, yeah, well you see... thats the thing... *runs and hides*

CSS for "table" layouts is overrated....

Tabular data should always been enclosed within a table. Non-tabular data should not. I don't need tables to house the tables that house the tables, et al.

Well, considering there's no 'pirated' release of vBSEO3 -- you'd have to have used a vBSEO2 release, which many people have 'massaged' to work on their vB3.x forums. In which case, it's not a fair comparison. :p

It's all just tags; div tag, table tag - who cares. You say tables shouldn't be used, I say it makes no difference if the end result is the same; although tables are more widely supported by browsers still in use.

It's a preference, not a requirement.

Distance 04-02-2007 06:08 PM

They could implement some more ajax functions :)

SEO is a bad idea in my oppinion.

Pm themselves agreed although should be an option..

Report own posts.. No because they might say oops wrong section or simular things..

Who said tables shouldn't be used? Not me.

Tables should be used where there is tabular data. Not to format a page. There's a happy medium between CSS and tables. Currently, vBulletin tables is the equivalent of me using 100% CSS. Pointless and ineffecient.

And yes, right now, it is a preference. However, as web trends continue CSS will be the new requirement. Why wait until then? Do you still use depreciated tags in your HTML?

Dismounted 04-03-2007 06:09 AM

I really hope this thread doesn't turn into one arguing about CSS & Tables.

Rework of the calendar would be great ;)

Brad 04-03-2007 10:50 AM

PostgreSQL DBMS driver or at least the ground work in place so I can make one myself without changing just about every file.

Paul M 04-03-2007 11:15 AM

Why would you need to change evey file - surely you just have a database class for PostgreSQL ?

Well it isn't every file, and is less of a problem now that we have the data managers (at this point reads are the main issue). There is still a lot of SQL (which was put there with mySQL in mind) laying around the files.

Simply putting together a Postgre DB class is not enough. A lot of SQL (and probably some php) needs to be re-done to take advantage of Postgre. If such things were not done I'd rather just see mySQL as the only supported DBMS.

They shouldnt SEO because it already has some SEO and the people who want more SEO are going to get more attention, therefor they should have to modify their forums theirself to earn the SEO.

Aken 04-04-2007 06:04 PM

Gallery, similar to the functionality of Menalto's Gallery 2.

JamieLee2k 04-04-2007 06:31 PM

SEO is a great idea, Ajax is a great. There is a Demo of vbSEO on there site if you look, (online demo only) Having a gallery would be great for some and not all.

How about a basic chat whether it be a popup or a small chat on the forumhome.

stinger2 04-04-2007 06:46 PM

i really dreamed some one asks this question......something i find a must have in vb......

in shsort.........maany hacks from
paul-M
cybernetec
alan@CIT
Abe1

these are briliant hackers..i would love their work to be bought by vbulletin and integrated....things that should be readymade......just a quick one

moderatrion auto pm
post thankyou
moderator statistic
advanced forum statistic
subforum arrange
check if already posted
top posters
flashimage banner rotator
paypal donate
advanced forum rules
who has read a thread
members who have visited today

these are (accorfing to me) essntial tools to make moderation and information easier....

i would also like to see some pm notification when reputation is received........same as the auto pm notification which had a great impact on letting members learn their mistakes...there is however other work from other great coders.but this is what i have in mind now

sunilvarma 04-05-2007 11:47 AM

great list there stinger2. I am not sure but I wish to see at least a few of these mods embedded in the next major release.

cyberphr 04-05-2007 02:22 PM

Shoutbox, latest statistics, portal, etc.

The basic things that are available for every BB, but only as modifications...

sunilvarma 04-05-2007 04:35 PM

I strongly feel that there's no need for a shoutbox. but a portal would be a great addition.

(This is not really useful or needed by most, but it would be nice to see a new default style).

stinger2 04-05-2007 05:20 PM

oh just forgot.......i wish they would do something with the search......better quicker.....does not take so much space in post index

for ex i have 150 000 threads...but the post index is above 5000 000 hits.......

the posst index alone takes about 45 min to backuo.....while the rest of the board takes 10 minutes.......

wish they can improve that

Luky 04-06-2007 02:29 AM

The last two posts i agree with on last page, some people dont like shoutboxes but the portal would be nice as a default, also a point system and a store that lets you edit your account like vBplaza would make vBulletin 500 jumps inhead of the other BB's! :)

ABILITY TO SELECT MORE THAN ONE FILE AS ATTACHMENT!

It's *sooo* frustrating to want to send 10 files and have to go back and select each of the files 10 times. Being able to use "select first file - hold shift - select last file" or "hold control- select each file" would be a GREAT addition.

(also displaying the # of users who have visited that day would be great - like back in the BBS days when you first logon).

sunilvarma 04-06-2007 11:57 AM

you made a great point z0diac, but I never saw this feature on any website so far and I guess its not possible (I think this is a design limitation). (correct me if I am wrong.)

Luky 04-06-2007 12:42 PM

Its called an archive! Put all 10 files in a .uha and VULLA!

kushal 04-06-2007 06:28 PM

  1. personal portal page for members with social networking like orkut.
  2. Favorite forums selectable by each member

iogames 04-06-2007 07:07 PM

For me, thinking on biz's?
-SEO
-Social Networking
-AJAX...

:D

cheat-master30 04-06-2007 07:22 PM

For me, it would be quite a few things, some simple and some not:

A portal, as said, and a shoutbox as said, but optional, as in you can select an option to disable and enable each one of them individually.

Better profiles, let users have more options and admins choose between different profile layouts such as putting pieces of data in different places on screen.

Easier image changing, like what Invisionfree did here:

http://www.photosled.com/data/500/me...gechanging.PNG

Where you choose an address or text replacement for the image, and it automatically changes all templates rather than having to make the replacement images the same file names as the original ones or changing templates. Like what you can do with the logo already.

Finally, an inbuilt points and shops system would be good, but as an option rather than compulsory default, maybe even as an official product.
