How to make multiples vB folders on the same forum like vb.org has

Hey guys, how can I make multiple folders like vb.org does so instead of having a new category I just create a forum of its own

This is what I mean

I used this to make mine. It isn't as nice and neat as VB.orgs, but it worked. It is also a pain because you have to edit them (depending on which style you use) to match each style you have for your board. Ones like vb.orgs would be wonderful :)

lisa i went on ur site but i couldnt see any example of that can u post a link for me to check please

Umm he showed the "tabs" here at the top. No one has answered any other post about how to make them like that, so I did my own, and added what we need in our forum in them. They just don't line up the same as here.

This can be done by making a category not visible on forum home by setting it's display order to 0. Then linking to that category where ever on your site.

This turn out 2 be very interesting to learn not only me but many others as well. It will be great if one of the coders here can tell us more about this and how to do it.

The reason I want this done is because I want to have 3 different sections on my forum (English, Spanish and Portuguese) in other words by adding three different folders to my forum_home to make those 3 categories to look just like a forum of their own and not just a category from the same main forum.

Any Knowledge that want to share some How to do this please

aveon 03-25-2007 04:35 AM

i think they did it via some plugin or somthin couse u can see they have the statistics and still i really need somethin like this if any coder came uo with a plugin would do that share it with us

rjmjr69 03-25-2007 04:37 AM

Well, I guees I will try few things. If it work using few advises here I will post back with the how too do this if I become sucessfull. ;)

DiSpy 04-04-2007 10:53 PM

I tried this, it worked great... Here's what I did:

1) Goto admin panel
2) Click "Forums & Moderators" --> Forum Manager
3) Click "Add New Forum"
4) Put in title and description
5) Under "Display Order" type "0"
6) (Optionally) I made it a child under my parent category.
7) "Act as Forum" set to "no"
8) Save settings
9) Go back to "Forums & Moderators" --> Forum Manager
10) Find the new forum and add some child forums the normal way.
11) Don't forget to create a link to the new hidden forum somwhere so people can get to it. (I added it to my top menu).

HOPE THAT HELPED!

johnrizz 04-05-2007 12:16 AM

Could someone please take a look at this forum and possibly explain how this is done? they look like Sub-forums but it doesn't say they are even though they actually are.... also if you highlight each forum it has a .HTML tag to them

They either bought vBseo (a paid mod) OR they used the free vRewrite mod.

Search the mods section here for info on both.

Hope that helps!

johnrizz 04-05-2007 08:19 PM

Thanks DiSpy, I give that try.....

Brandon Sheley 04-05-2007 09:15 PM

this is very easy.,,, making tabs would be in the header or navbar template

jluerken 04-19-2007 09:41 PM

The tab thing is great. It makes a huge board very smart to navigate.

Does anyone know how the at vb.org made the search box?
Its nice to be able to search single categories only...

This works great except that they can no longer use the jump menu or do advanced searches on that forum. The forum name will not show up on either of those lists. Any idea how to fix that?

Thanks!

Dismounted 07-31-2007 10:37 AM

Yes, you'll have to make use of the plugin system.

sinaluna 07-31-2007 03:56 PM

Do you know of a pre existing plugin or is this something I will have to code myself?

Thanks for the help!

I'll throw you guys a bone here; this is how I've done it.

Add the following to your Main CSS - Additional CSS Definitions:
(Courtesy of vB.org) :p
Code:

td.tab a:link,td.tab a:visited,td.tab a:active,a.tab,
td.tab2 a:link,td.tab2 a:visited,td.tab2 a:active,a.tab2,a:link.tab2,a:active.tab2,a:visited.tab2{
background:transparent url(images/tab.gif) top right no-repeat;
font:11px tahoma,sans-serif;
color:yellow;
width:71px;
height:20px;
text-align:center;
padding:2px 0 0;
margin:0 1px;
text-decoration:none;
float:right;
position:relative;
top:0px
}
td.tab a:hover,img.tab a:hover,.tab a:hover,a:hover.tab,
td.tab2 a:link,td.tab2 a:visited,td.tab2 a:active,a.tab2,a:link.tab2,a:active.tab2,a:visited.tab2{
background:transparent url(images/tab2.gif) top right no-repeat;
}

Obviously, you'll need to change the information to suit your needs.

Then you'll need to create 2 images: 1 for what the tab regularly looks like and then another for what it will look like when it's hovered over.

I've placed my tabs under the navbar; so to do that you'd find in your "navbar" template:
Code:

<!-- / login form -->

        </td>

    </if>

</tr>
</table>

And add underneath it:
Code:

    <table cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="100%" align="center" style="border-bottom-width:0px;color:white;">
  <tr>
    <td class="nowrap" align="right" valign="bottom" style="padding:0 5px 0;color:white">

<a href="#" title="My Tab" id="mytab" class="tab">My Tab</a>
<script type="text/javascript">
        vbmenu_register("mytab",true);
    </script>

  </tr></table>

<div class="vbmenu_popup" id="mytab_menu" style="display:none">
<table cellpadding="4" cellspacing="1" border="0" align="left">
        <tr align="left">
            <td class="thead"><a href="forumdisplay.php?f=12">My Tab</a> </td>
        </tr>
        <tr align="left">
            <td class="vbmenu_option" title="">
<a href="#">Link</a>
</td>
</tr>
        <tr align="left">
            <td class="vbmenu_option" title="">
<a href="#">Link 2</a>
</td></tr>
</table>
</div>

Again, edit to suit your needs.

Rukas 08-01-2007 02:11 AM

Has anybody worked out how to get the forums statistics to appear at the bottom of the "new" section and also have the drop down navigation jump menu work?

Dismounted 08-01-2007 07:12 AM

This is what I use, please don't distribute it though.

Search Menu - Hook: 'search_intro'
PHP Code:

$forumid INSERTFORUMID;
$forum =& $vbulletin->forumcache["$forumid"];

$optionvalue $forumid;
$optiontitle "$forum[depthmark] $forum[title_clean]";
if (
$vbulletin->options['fulltextsearch'] AND !($vbulletin->userinfo['forumpermissions']["$forumid"] & $vbulletin->bf_ugp_forumpermissions['canviewthreads']))
{

$optiontitle .= '*';

$show['cantsearchposts'] = true;
}
$optionclass 'fjdpth' iif($forum['depth'] > 44$forum['depth']);

if (
in_array($forumid$vbulletin->GPC['forumchoice']))
{

$optionselected 'selected="selected"';

$noforumselected '';
}
else
{

$optionselected '';
}

eval(
'$searchforumbits .= "' fetch_template('option') . '";');

Forum Jump - Hook: 'forumjump'
PHP Code:

$forumid INSERTFORUMID;
$forum $vbulletin->forumcache["$forumid"];

$optionvalue $forumid;
$optiontitle $prependchars $forum[title_clean]";

$optionclass 'fjdpth' iif($forum['depth'] > 44$forum['depth']);

if (
$curforumid == $optionvalue)
{

$optionselected 'selected="selected"';

$optionclass 'fjsel';

$defaultselected '';
}
else
{

$optionselected '';
}

eval(
'$jumpforumbits .= "' fetch_template('option') . '";');
