vBulletin 1

Was there such a thing? Does anyone have a working demo? When was it released? Just out of curiosity!

AWS 02-21-2007 03:52 PM

Yes there was a v1 of vbulletin.
Do a Google search for "vbulletin lite" and you'll get a few hits that show what it looked like. It was released in June 2001.

Marco van Herwaarden 02-21-2007 06:06 PM

I even have it on my disk. :D

Quillz 02-22-2007 11:56 PM

Of course there was a v1. If you want to see what the style looked like, check out "vB Retro" on Jelsoft's board.

... just do a search on vBulletin.com for some of the older threads.

Kind of funny in retrospect - but amongst the regulars back then ... and it was a much smaller regular crowd than these days .... was the talk about how vBulletin was going to take over the world .......... ya know - that typical BS from the nutso fans of a product that never really happens ......... :)

(... just imagine having to hack in... oh everything - Polls, Who is Online, Private Messages... would say Quick Reply - that was much later .... heck - we had to hack in Polls - that should give you an idea)

Oh - it was released I believe it must have been April of 2000 ... Might have been May ...

Kind of an interesting story behind it all also - so its worth checking out. Sort of a Google type thing... vB was originally just a rewritten UBB - but in this new, but faster, language called PHP - they tried to sell it to Infopop if I remember correctly - Infopop told them to get lost...... they didnt get very lost :)

Why in the blue hell would you need that classic version, huh? O_o

UltimateOreo! 03-02-2007 11:45 PM

HAHAHA! There are so many porn bots on all of those sites its not even funny! Well maybe it is, but thats not the point!

harmor19 03-04-2007 04:58 AM

Did vbulletin 1 use native PHP language?

Marco van Herwaarden 03-04-2007 10:56 AM

vBulletin has always been written in PHP.

The later versions of vBulletin used there own objects such as $DB_SITE or $db to connect to mysql. Did vBulletin 1 just use "mysql_query()" as opposed to "$db->mysql_read()"?

Marco van Herwaarden 03-04-2007 12:06 PM

I really don't know. But even with vB 3.6 these internal functions will call mysql_read() etc in the end.

Chris M 03-04-2007 04:45 PM

The best person to ask about that would be John or James :)

In vBulletin 1:
PHP Code:

$foruminfo=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT title,description,categoryid,active,daysprune,titleimage,forumtemplate,forumbittemplate,newthreadimage,headertemplate,useadvheader,footertemplate,useadvfooter,rulestemplate,allowbbcode,allowimages,allowhtml,allowsmilies FROM forum WHERE forumid=$forumid");

In vB Lite:
PHP Code:

$foruminfo=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT title,description,active FROM forum WHERE forumid=$forumid");

By the standards of the time the code was written who's coding is more impressive, John's or Kier and the other developers?
When John wrote version 1 I'm sure there weren't any tutorials on the web or that many people he can ask for help.

Chris M 03-06-2007 09:19 AM

When you do a comparison between a current version of something and a much older version of something, simply saying one or the other is better is ignorance of the effort, time and difficulty involved with creating the first and the current versions...

In my opinion, neither Kier's nor John's coding is more impressive, they are both equally as valuable and incredible :)
