Whos gone to Vista?
Hi ya'll
Whos made the switch and your thoughts? I myself think its there best yet, At present the only downer is that Alcohol will not run All my other software that wouldn't run all i had to do was set them to XP sp2 compatibility mode and install as admin and there all running 100%. I also think the look is outstanding, not to mention the Sidebar and gadgets It was a shame about MS removing Active Desktop as i used that for adding the vaispy.php so that i could see the latest posts in real time right there on my desktop but i have now made a gadget for myself and yep there it is back on the desktop :) I have now got all my programs installed and the speed of my pc is unreal compared to what it was like with XP installed. I give it  big time :) The image is of my desktop with both monitors on the go :) http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/3020/desktopxu4.jpg |
I don't have a reason to switch yet
|
You can have the same desktop also with XP :) However i am also planning to move to vista soon as i know tons of things changed. I used Rc1 for a month and i loved all the features vista provided.

I have been using Vista since RC1 and I'm on RTM Ultimate now. Hands down, Microsoft did something right for once. Although a few minor things are stupid, you get used to them quick. |
I plan to stay away from it as long as possible.

And, no, Im not a Mac user either. |
Thats a shame, I would reccomend installed that ms virtual PC 2007 and install vista to that, then see what you think, ya got to have a go before ya judge it :)
I must say the other niggly thing is it was always asking me to confirm everything twice over cause of the security settings, i sorted it now, very rarely get any problems from him now :) |
I heard it does not allow many games to play, not that I am much of a gamer it would be a down side for me.
Also anything micro soft is not good to use until it has been out for enough time to get the majority of the holes plugged. |
I can play Farcry ;)
Any software that struggles to work all i did was set it to XP sp2 compatability mode and run as admin, I have had it in for a week now and no way will i go back, i cant beleive how fast it is compare to XP :) |
Looks nice. I beta tested it and It was so full of problems I had to remove it but that was awhile back. I have heard very mixxed reviews the younger crowd seems to drool over it the older crowed seems to piss on it. I will wait until I upgrade my current system before trying it again. One of the neatest features I thought was the extra memory you can add by using a simple USB thumb drive. Those are so cheap these days compaired to installed ram I was using a 3 gig to boost my system to 4 total and it was blazing fast.
|
I'm not touching it for at least 12 months. We bought a new pc last week - just a cheap thing for one of the kids and it came preinstalled with vista. After a week of blue screen errors I'm about ready to throw the damn thing out of the window. Ended up having to reinstall vista twice and then update every driver on the system - even though being a brand new system you'd think it'd already be up to date *mutters and growls some more*
It does look pretty tho :p |
I can honestly say, I have not had one blue screen, yet,
I didnt know bout usb drives and more ram though, any info i can read about this please? /me touches wood |
Here's a couple of threads made regarding the lovely BSOD situations for your reading pleasure ;)
http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion...hp?t24840.html http://www.tutorials-ne.com/vistaset...ta-Blue-20431/ - this is an awkward one to read but the guy ends up having to remove ram and anything plugged in via usb and all sorts *rolls eyes* http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion...hp?t26201.html - nvidia is causing lots of BSODs http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=258515 They're not all recent threads but they pretty much cover everything I had to do to get this stupid thing to work correctly. |
cheers will have a look :)
Interesting lol....I was a lucky one, me not had any issues like that :) If ya want to know what hardware i got so you can upgrade/downgrade let me know pmsl.... :p |
*blows raspberry* Keep laughing, I'm sure you'll get hit by it at some point <grin>
|
More than likely, but as a safe guard i have used Acronis Image and backedup from where i am now :)
|
Probably wise :)
|
I tried Vista on my test box but did not get acquainted (did not like) the new user interface switched back to XP
|
I think its an aquired taste, thats what did it for me was the inteface, that and the speed, oh and everything else lol
|
*hugs OS X*
http://www.degredo.net/ This always makes me giggle. I'm sure for experienced users there is a lot of great stuff in Vista, but I'mma sit here and giggle anyways. *giggles* |
I've been using it since release day and I'm really suprised at how great it's been, the only issue I've encountered aren't really OS related, but because 3rd party apps haven't got their gold drivers and such out yet, such as for my GFX card (which seems to work fine with the beta drivers for Vista aside from some artefacts appearing in games) and iTunes.
Vista is by no means an essential nor necessary upgrade for anyone using XP Service Pack 2, I can agree with that much, but it's the collection of many, many small updates and tweaks that I really can't be arsed keeping track of via installing on XP and such that come with Vista which I'm enjoying. To be honest, I'm really pleased with the OS and as an early adopter I was of course expecting to encounter a few issues but they've been few and far between, to my relief. Really pleased, wouldn't go back to XP in a heartbeat. |
You all will go to Vista.... It blows XP out of the water. As I carry my laptop around and fire it up friends and associates always say one thing...... "Damn! that's a fast machine!"
Well, it is a stout laptop but it was not this fast until Vista..... I've never gotten a blue screen. You all will be saying...... Geez, I wish I'd installed this thing sooner. The only problems I could see someone having is trying to run it on a wimpy machine. |

This is how I'm going to decide if I ever have to downgrade to a Windows OS!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/24fan001/915.gif And yes I said "downgrade". Mac OS X is totally superior than windows... |
I am not touching it until at least SP1. By then the driver issues will be worked out...I hope. And the HDCP stuff will ether be worked out as well, or it will be shown as such an issue that I will not want to switch.
Just uninstalled the beta from my main PC. Testing Ubuntu and it's latest release. |
I tried Vista for a couple of weeks and returned back to XP. The Aero interface was good and I think there is nothin to complain about that On thing that sucks is UAC. Turn it off or life's gonna be hell for ya!
But Vista fails miserably at gaming - thanks to the nVidia drivers. Rest works fine. I could get most of the things to work fine on Vista. I got so used to Vista that it took me a couple of days to get fully used to XP again!! Maybe I will try Vista again after 3 months. |
Are you on about that thing where you have to aurthorize every bloddy minor thing you do lol?
If so it took me a little while but i managed to switch it off and it was Bliss (scuse the pun lol) after that :) Quote:
|
I tried installing it on my computer on an empty hard drive i had laying around. I got the blue screen of death after the initial installation.
Not good at all. Supposedly it was due to my Realtek 97' on board audio. I will probably stay away from Vista for the next while until everything becomes compatible or i get a newer system. |
That is strange i have the Realtek 97 and didnt have a problem with it
|
Yeah, I am talking about that damn thing - User Account Control. I just can't figure out how MS engineers came up with that piece of shit!! The first thing I did after installing Vista was turning UAC off.
Quote:

yeah - with the user account control they now can say that you have compromised windows security policy and that any security breeches are now not the fault of MS, but the fault of the end user.
It's like buying insurance on a car and not being able to use the insurance when the key is in the ignition. k...that might be a stretch. I really want to convince adobe and some other vendors to start coding for linux. too bad macs are so much money tho... |
