Google Adsense on top of full picture-attachments
 

Hi

I have been looking for a mod, which would change the behaviour of vB graphical attachment view.

When I click on a thumbnail I get a new tab/window opened with a direct header() php function. I don't like it - I would like to put there some advertisement. So instead of just picture I would have some html and then picture.

I have over 1.000.000 of attachments (jpegs and gifs), which are very popular and I have nothing but costs for yet another 10Mbps pipe to serve something like 5 TB of files monthly. If I think about Adsense revenue I could generate while giving these picures to the public...

Anyhow - do you have any clue where shall I start?

Has anybody had such idea already implemented?

I had a brief look at this but it's not as easy as it sounds and the built-in functionality rather relies on there being no content other than the attachment. It's all a bit messy...

I would assume many forum owners can benefit greatly from such a mod. Perhaps if a few of us pooled together to pay a developer for such a project we could get it done? Any interest in that?

I am also mid-advanced coder and after investigating what would have to be done I decided to pay some really big brains ;) to get it done well.
I intend to share it with all of you after having the coder paid.

This doesn't seem all that difficult, I'll take a look at it when I have some time. I can't imagine doing this as a product/plug-in though. Most likely it would require code modification.

I was trying to figure something out for this myself but it was taking me too long with poor results.....

If you have time please share your ideas and thinking on this and I will share mine.....

I talked with my sysadmin and he said it is not an easy fix, because of the way vB currently serves up attachments. If it was easy, he could have done it by now himself, though he is not a coder.

Hopefully someone will come out with something, there IS definitely an interest in this! So any coders out there... here's a challenge!

Because it's a niche modification. Until someone who CAN code it NEEDS it, it will get done at the time and leisure of whomever decides to tackle it.

Also, keep in mind this request is NOT posted in the Paid Modifications section. I can't speak for anyone else, but I check this section last. I only visit here when I have no paid work that needs finishing.

I'm not promising anything, but if you take a look at my posting record in this section you'll see that I make good on most of my offerings.

That's good... I just don't see why someone would want to come into a thread where everyone is saying how hard it is and mention that it is so easy. I guess it makes people feel stupid... why mention it is easy unless you want to prove it..... otherwise the fact that someone said it was easy means nothing. Just words....

Just my opinion anyways... I know I am low on the totem poll in here as far as coding goes and I have no problem admitting it. I try as hard as I can and I study daily... That all being said, I could not figure this out. I did have some ideas but they seemed to complicated for me to implement....

Who ever does this I would love to know how it was done.....

How about this? Who ever mentioned that this is easy can at least explain the way in which this can be accomplished. Then maybe some of us can try and put it together.. I think I could do it with some instruction and direction...

I never said how easy it was, I simply said it doesn't seem too difficult and that I'd gladly take a look at it when I get time. Nothing more, nothing less.

First impressions:
- my Google Analytics shows extra 25% of page impressions (!!!)
- my Google Adsense has given me extra 10% income (!!!)
- no speed downgrade

Technical:
- works as product
- fully customizable through template

Releasing this hack:
- I will talk to the author so he will release this freely (he has promised that to me)

Looks good, but does this violate Google's TOS? I'm wondering if they would have a problem with their ads appearing on a page without any content.

Without any content? Attachment is considered as "no content"? Strange way of thinking, especially knowing that google indexes graphics, too...

EDIT: It is up to you, if the page has no content. Simply fill in the template and voilla :)
