thanks for the tips

Wow. More views here than any other place. Thanks for the nice comments! :)
|
I must strongly agree with the bit about not having too many forums.
Although my largest forum is at 3.5kuniques/day so what would I know :( |
Thanks King. Your list contains some good common sense, especially that one about the Mods not being too harsh on members over rules.
|
very good sense indeed. I have tons of forum in there but i deny them all now and left the active one~
let's see how it goes from there! |

There's always exceptions to the "rules" ;)

1. Disagree. A lone admin at the start can easily keep control of a forum and keep it running well. You then hire staff when the work is too much for you alone from the member base that's there. 2. Certainly agreed. Many forums which are not that open to suggestions are pretty much soul less in my personal opinion. 3. A must. But as you said, don't be too leniant on them, or too harsh. Too harsh will drive people away before they even bother thinking about joining, too leniant could cause a mini riot and people leaving from the arguments that spring up. 4. Most solid advice ever. No joke, it seems 90% of forums make this mistake early on, and 99% of the free hosted ones make it as well. Let your community dictate what forums you have, not make ones for ever minor thing that people MIGHT visit for. 5. Agreed to an extent, but there are a lot of times when you need to add features half way through a board's lifespan, or earlier, or later. Why? Well modifications not existing until then might be a good factor, monetary reasons such as not being able to afford premium mods might be another factor, etc. Plus, you need to add features as you go to keep the members interested. 6 I'd agree. Most of my site's own popularity and links comes from affiliates. 7. Haven't personally tried this, but it seems like good advice. 8. So true. Default skins are just blah. Heck, even a pre made is slightly better than that, so at LEAST change the logo for your forum. It's also good to try and make an original skin for the site though... 9. Said this earlier, but that's true. 10. You can probably tell I agree with this. Nothing I hate more out of my minor pet peeves that default smilies being the whole set on a forum. It's also good to have custom made smilies which relate to your theme or your community as well. 11. Also true. Also hate default BB code sets. 12. I'm not greatly in favour of this, since I personally hate advertisements or premium only content. 13. Not sure. Extra fields in a drop down seem a good idea though, but can you clarify what you mean here? |
Thanks, this thread is really useful ;)

great posts thankx.. and also great cheat master.. actually loved your first point.. i also agree to handle myself and after forum get populated i'll choose from my own member rather than getting someone from other site.. if you can pull moderators from other sites then remember he may be pulled by other sites from your site too at crucial times.. so hire someone that has dedicated and is loyal to your forum..

Good info. I started my forum 4 months ago so I don't need any of this. However, after reading, I found that these are all of the things I had to do to have a decent place to be. Good write up.

True, most things mentioned here kind of get done as your site gets bigger and your members request more stuff.
