Why even own a desktop computer?

I used to be one of those nerds with 3 computer screen and 50 boxes of motherboards and processors and my custom build tower. Fully modded right.

About two years ago now I lost my job and my tower broke. No money to buy a new CPU and I had just bought an HP Laptop.

To be honest, I eventually sold every piece of hardware and I live by the fullsize desktop replacement laptop.

It's so handy. And I just love it, and nothing every breaks or fails. I already upgraded the memory to a happy size, and this HP model has dual hard drive slots that I filled with two 250 gig drives.

So, when ever I go to a friends house or my parents and use thier desktop, it seems so 1999 to me.

As technology improves, processors get faster, I think more and more people are moving towards mobile anyways.

As far as graphic design goes, the small screen is a pain in the behind. Laptops are much more expensive than a desktop of equivalent performance and you may think that nothing breaks but they break as much if not more than desktops (heat is much more of an issue in laptops, if nothing else). You have less upgradability than you do with desktops and performance, while always improving, is not quite on par with desktop systems.

Performance on a budget - For the price you of a high end laptop, you can usually build at least two similarly configured or better desktop PC's. Plus, with desktops you allow yourself room to upgrade. With laptops, you can usually only upgrade a bare minimum of things like your memory and hard drives.

I made the same switch a few years back and haven't owned a desktop since. Love the portability.

Faster...Better

Yeah I agree with that.

I have to disagree with that statement. I haven't had any problems, that can go along with how you handle and treat your equipment. When I used to build my own stuff would always break. Maybe it's just becuase I'm not opening the laptop up all the time and adding and over clocking, etc. I don't have any issues with heat.

I also design and code websites on mine while being on the go, but when I home I have a dock to plug into a 27 inch flat screen.

I should mention I dont' have the normal 15 inch, I have a dv9000t with 17inch and full size keyboard.

I'd have to debate that too. You could build a similar for cheaper maybe, not better for cheaper. Better equals more money in the desktop world becuase you can build more than a laptop allows room for.

However, all your desktops are still limited to being used in one place. Mobility is priceless.

How many of you own cell phones.

Hello,

I enjoy the best of both worlds. lol If I had to choose, I would likely stick with my desktop. I use it far more often and when I leave the house, it is normally to give me a break from the computer in the first place. (The laptop is great for when I am travelling!)

Ziki 01-09-2007 07:05 PM

Look laptops are easy to use but the performance is not as great as having a static pc.

King Kovifor 01-09-2007 07:18 PM

When I get older, and go to college, I'll live on a laptop (probably a MacBook). Than once I get an apartment and things afterwards, especially when I get off the ground money wise, I'll buy another iMac. So I can have the connivence of a portable system but have the stability and accessibility of desktop (constantly charged for one thing) and have a portable computer for other things. Advantages of both I think.

I had a laptop also that I sold last year, a SONY VAO. I bought it after I sold my old tower system. Even though I have a tower again now, I must agree laptops are great. I used to crash out on the couch with the laptop on the coffee table using it. Much more relaxing, rather than being sat at a computer table in a chair. I had a mouse that I bought also to use with it.

The only downside is games though. They just don't cut it like a custom tower when it comes to playing online game that require a very good system. But if your not into games, I'd say get a laptop instead of a PC.

Marco van Herwaarden 01-09-2007 07:22 PM

Mu Current laptop (Core 2 Duo, more then enough memory and fast disk) outperforms my current desktop (P3/550MHz/198Mb RAM/WinXP-SP2) with no problems. :D

Guest190829 01-09-2007 07:23 PM

My new macbook should be arriving any minute...(I hope). Which will be a move from Desktop to Laptop, I am hoping the transition will be good!

MRGTB 01-09-2007 07:25 PM

Do yourself a favour before it comes, get yourself a USB optical mouse to use with it, miles better than using the mouse keypad. You'll love it then!

smacklan 01-09-2007 07:53 PM

why limit yourself?...I have both and use them accordingly ;)

Code Monkey 01-09-2007 08:40 PM

I can't build a laptop so I don't use them.

PennylessZ28 01-09-2007 09:39 PM

I've just never replaced the desktop becuase the laptop has worked for my needs. I don't play games, mostly just do website work, and graphic work, along with some video editing for my car club.

Currently AMD X2 with 2 gig memory and 260 gig hdd (100gig + 160gig) 17inch ultra bright view.

As MRGTB said, get a wireless mouse. My HP came with bluetooth built in so I have a bluetooth mouse, which is very useful. I only use the touch pad when I'm using my PC to work on cars.

I have a program for tuning LS! engines called LS1Edit that I use with my laptop.

Also, when I've been coding late, sometimes I like to carry the laptop from the desk to my recliner.

I suppose it comes down to your needs. However, I still dont understand you MAC boys. Thats like a never ending FAD.

peterska2 01-10-2007 02:12 AM

Why use just one or the other, or even just one of each? :p

I have a MacBook, a Win95 Laptop (it did have ME on it when I got it, but needless to say I quickly nuked that and put 95 on it instead as it is a much better OS), a Win XP Pro Desktop (hooked to to my 32" LCD TV), and a 24" iMac.

Thats what I call basic, but I'll probably be adding a Linux box or two to it before the year is out, and maybe get a newer windows laptop to run alongside everything else, and then by the time I've got another Windows Desktop (probably with Vista), and a MacPro, both of which will be custom specs as normal, then I'll be heading towards perfection.

PennylessZ28 01-10-2007 04:23 AM

Tri-Boot, Linux, Vista, Media Center 2005

Quillz 01-12-2007 03:12 PM

For me, I use my notebook computer for school, and that's about it. It has no graphics card, no games and weighs only 4.7 lbs. My desktop computer, on the other hand, has a powerful graphics card, tons of games and all my image editing software.

I think as notebooks become even cheaper and have better hardware, people will see the benefit of just having a desktop replacement notebook, but until that day comes, I'm still going to stick with desktop and notebook computers.

PennylessZ28 02-09-2007 10:28 PM

I just bought a new laptop this weekend.

I am not allowed a Laptop, She said sommat like "you would even use it in the toilet", Not sure what she was implying.

I have used them before an i just cant get on with them, too small for my liking, If i did ever
get 1 it would be purely for the portability...

She was implying that you would take it everywhere you go.
You can buy laptops with 21 inch screens now so your argument is wrong.

What is wrong with that? Do that all the time. :D

bashy 02-10-2007 10:18 AM

21" screen, well, it might as well be a desktop then pmsl...

Caerydd 02-10-2007 02:18 PM

Well, I just end up using the laptop (and old G4 17") everywhere I go. It fits in my backpack, so the weight isn't an issue, it runs WoW smoothly enough, and runs all the image stuff I need. The mac laptop has become a bit of a lifestyle choice for me, so I never use our desktop any more.

I like things 'just so' when I use a machine, so it makes sense for me to take the same one everywhere.

aceofspades 02-11-2007 09:26 PM

Ive got an alienware laptop and i love it, 17" screen, 7800GT and room for upgrading later on. What more can one ask for :)

sebbe 02-11-2007 09:51 PM

Switched from Desktop to Laptop last summer, this X-Mas I got myself a mad one. Only downside is the heat, I'm afraid of leaving it on for too long. Been reading about way too many laps that overheated.

Aken 02-12-2007 08:38 AM

I've been on a desktop PC since I first started using a computer regularly, probably 10 years ago. I agree with a couple people here that stated that it's nice to be able to walk away from the desktop and take a break every now and then. I also like having my desktop plugged into my television and surround sound system for excellent entertainment.

I've never had a laptop of my own, but I think I would really enjoy having one. It would give me the opportunity to go sit in another more comfortable room and chat with friends if I've having a lazy day. And more recently, I'd be able to take it with me to meet with a current or prospective client - no more jotting down in notebooks and such.

So basically, I think it's the best of both worlds. Just wish I HAD both worlds :D

magnus 02-14-2007 11:02 AM

1) I can upgrade my Desktop periodically to keep on the bleeding edge, I can't do that with a laptop.

2) My desktop will always outperform/embarass the 'best' laptop at the time.

I have a laptop for work (on-site programming) and I use my desktop for everything else.

Distance 02-14-2007 11:57 AM

Because you get better spec for a cheaper price

Easily upgraded

You can't drop a desktop down the stairs.. well your not as likely to.. i dropped a dell down the stairs once, it would have probably have blown up anyway :p

Drop water/drink on a keyboard of a laptop you are ++++ed, on a desktop.. its fine :)

sunilvarma 02-16-2007 12:11 PM

I would never dump my PC for a lappy - atleast, as long as I play games.

PCs generate less heat (longer up-times - I hardly shutdown my rig!), they don't need regular charging, they are easy to upgrade, provide great overclockability, can accommodate latest high-end stuff like graphic and sound cards and more.

So whats the point in getting a laptop?? No gamers around here ehh??
