What should i start a forum for?

Well i have a license and im honestly not sure what to do with it.

I want to do something useful with my license that might also be of some benefit to some people :)

I was thinking something maybe along the lines of a DIY forum or something, as i have alot of talents and skills with DIY type stuff, so that might be something worthwhile... but other than that im nto really sure what i could do.

Not only that, i mean really hat could i do that hasnt already flooded the market?

RedTyger 12-08-2006 08:56 AM

A DIY forum sounds like a terrific idea to me.

MrPHD 12-08-2006 09:13 AM

Hi, BigJohnny if you donĀ“t know what are to do whit your license i give you one idea, create a community who talks about hacks of vBulletin, helps, modifications and so on...or you can standby at apears one idea.Regards

there are so many vbulletin hacking sites out there it isnt funny.

Everyone of them has a custom hackmod database, and they arent publicly available.... i cant code one myself, and dont really have muhc coding ability, so i dont think starting a vbulletin hacking site is something i could really undertake.

DIY = Do It Yourself.

I recommend you look at what interests you -- such as DIY stuff -- and then start getting to know the existing community. Are there problems in that community that you could solve with a highly targeted forum? Are there gaps in the information/community online? For example, if people are interested in building their own widgets, and you see that there are no widget building communities available, than you could fill that hole. Alternately, maybe there is a widget building community, but it's too heavily moderated and people are unhappy. Create an unmoderated widget-building forum.

Just some thoughts...

BigJohnny 12-08-2006 04:12 PM

well i definitly build some odd gadgets some times... so i thin i would gear more towards a sort of invention type forum as opposed to like a fix it yourself ... build a house type of DIY stuff.

kind of like a place where people come and trade ideas on all kinds of things.
but how would i even start such a forum... how does one even go about getting their first member you know....

i dont really know anyone i could bring to the board.. it would basically be all me until i got some members and could get some good qualified staff.

hotwheels 12-08-2006 04:28 PM

my vote is for do it yourself, that's a great idea.

DannyMilner 12-08-2006 09:29 PM

You should make something you enjoy doing, I would say thats the main thing. The DIY idea sounds great

anything you are passionate about.

if you can't think of anything, you shouldn't create a forum ;)

It sounds like you have a great idea already to start the site with. Don't worry about not appointing admins or mods ahead of time. It's always better to choose your staff from within the membership body. Just watch and you'll see who the most enthusiastic members are who are natural leaders, helpers, coaches, communicators. Those folks begin doing the job for you without realizing they're doing it. The members know them, have come to respect them, and already begin to follow their lead before they get "promoted" so there's usually much less friction. (I always look for 3 things -- expertise, teaching ability, and a sense of humor.)

Same goes for the direction you take with your community ... just relax, enjoy the exchange between people, and let the group evolve naturally. You don't need to pin everything down from the start and then try to force everything to go exactly the way you envisioned it on Day 1. Successful communities grow from the strengths found within the group dynamic, so keep a light touch on the reigns.

Have fun and enjoy yourself

You could always make an anime forum since there aren't any huge ones yet.

RedTyger 12-09-2006 01:06 PM

Well, the largest forum on the Internet is about anim?. So apart from that, no. :D

http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/index.php

But it's really pretty nasty, could do with a pro and some decent software behind it.

BigJohnny 12-09-2006 02:25 PM

ya but if i started an anime site i could well imagine the kind of......people, that would end up there... :)

i find the hardcore anime types a little strange sometimes heh.... i mean i like anime but im not gonna go crazy about it :D

RedTyger 12-09-2006 05:15 PM

I honestly do think a DIY forum is an excellent idea. It's a subject that lends itself so well to the exchange of expertise.

BigJohnny 12-09-2006 06:15 PM

Im leaning towards it... but im not certain how to get it setup.

I mean what I'm aiming for isn't like the kind of DIY site you would look for to find information on stuff like DIY plumbing, or electrical..

More of like a gadgets type of place.... I build alot of weird stuff, sometimes I see a commcerical product that could be built at home for a fraction of the cost etc.

When i set it up, do i want to get it fully setup right away, as in SEO, Ads etc?

Or would it be best to just get a forum going, then add stuff like SEO and Ads as it grows?

I dont want to lose what small member base i may have gained, because i put ads or something on my site.

RetroDreams 12-12-2006 01:49 AM

I'm in the same boat. I recently sold several of my forums but the sale did not include my vB licenses so I have several open licenses and I'm looking for new forum ideas to start.

ninjashoes 12-14-2006 11:23 AM

I was gonna make an anime forum but just added an anime section to my existing forum instead. Im lazy

RetroDreams 12-31-2006 07:08 PM

Bump. Still have 3 open licenses. Even would considering working together with someone on the right board.

PennylessZ28 01-02-2007 03:45 PM

Start a forum to get girls, I meet my soon to be wife on mine :)

Squirt 01-02-2007 05:12 PM

Ive never seen a D.I.Y forum before so it sounds like a great idea and should make out a good community, I'm sure a D.I.Y forum would intrest many people.

BigJohnny 01-02-2007 05:14 PM

Well it seems as if DIY would be the way to go.....

I would need some staff to help me out with it though... icant do graphics worth a shit, and im not really up to par on making a professiona looking "commercial" site/forum...... so i wouldnt really know where to start.

vietfancy 01-02-2007 05:37 PM

DIY is a good thing, but a forum about DIY will not success. What can you do with DIY forum?

SmashinYoungMan 01-02-2007 09:30 PM

I actually had a site called diy-forum.com. I've since dropped the site and let the domain name expire. It was a subject that interested me as I am a do-it-yourselfer myself, but I didn't have the time to properly promote it. I'd definitely say go for it!

RetroDreams 01-03-2007 02:39 AM

I think DIY may be too broad of a forum, no?

vietfancy 01-03-2007 03:03 AM

i'm telling you, start a SEO forum can be better. DIYers are too busy with their projects, and have notime to get online... They are all workers.

You make a very good point. Additionally, I'm pretty sure the SEO forum market is flooded out there already.

01-03-2007 04:07 AM

Or a a promising new show?

Xoligy 01-03-2007 12:32 PM

A forum that mods/hacks and improves previous gadgets and other stuff would be great. There's a lot of cool things you can do with old junk, but most people are too scared to do it or don't know how. You always see this things blogged about, and a community dedicated to just that would be neat.

There you go, a bloggers forum, haven't seen that yet.

Fix it yourself?

blind-eddie 01-03-2007 09:55 PM

You can sell it to me lol

Xoligy 01-04-2007 07:47 PM

I think a DIY forum would be useful for people in a bit of a pickle or can't understand instructions.

01-04-2007 10:17 PM

Whatever you are interested in more then anything- then have a forum about that.
When you read what every one wrote on your forum site- you will enjoy it allot!
Good luck:)

Just keep in mind, don't setup a forum aimed at a market that you think there is a place for and thats the only reason your choosing that topic to cover, if your not interested in that yourself, you'll lose interest really fast in wanting to promote your site.

Stick with something you enjoy and feel you will enjoy adding content too, in trying to get it off the ground. In this day and age, most things are well covered now anyway by other sites. To many people make the mistake of creating sites around topics there just not interested in just because they think it will work. And then wonder why they has no interest in it a month down the line.

Even if you did setup a board around something your not interested in and it took off big time. Can you imagine adminstrating the site and thinking to yourself. I have absouletly no interest in what's being posted what's so ever, it would just be once big turn-off for you. LOL
