How Do I Ban All Foreign Countries From Viewing My Site?

Don't mean to stir the pot from this thread, but to be blunt -- the turkish hacking ring that attacks my sites on a regular basis is annoying. Not to mention the foriegn spammers that register on my site just to spam their porno gambling websites. My site is a regional site to Michigan, United States so I don't see any reason why anyone from any other country would need to register. Is there a way to block all foriegn IP addresses that resolve to another country from registering/accessing my vBulletin website?

Also, is there a way to ban based on their email address? I noticed the turkish hackers usually use hotmail.(country domain) instead of regular hotmail.com, etc. While I know either of these cases wouldn't stop all of the hacking activity, it would definitely stop a lot of it.

By closing down your site.

It can't be that hard to do -- most IPs resolve to specific ISPs and such and can be resolved to a location. There's programs that will take an IP address and show you an aerial map of the neighborhood that IP address is coming from. All it'd have to do is figure out if the IP resolves to a square box around the US and if not, ban. Ah well, was just hoping there was something available, I see entirely no reason for anyone outside of the US to be browsing my site in the first place.

You could:

- Use aggressive email banning
- Set up new user moderation
- Report the offending IP's
- Set up a forum mask so it seems that the place has been perm-closed; only banned members could see. All it would take is to change the relevant phrase.

Good luck.

Well, ban an entire subnet, most countries have the same subnet, thats how other sites do it.

try htaccess

.htaccess is the only solution to disallow other sites/users accessing your site, do you have a list of IP Address, host masks for your country alteast ?

If you look you can find a ip blocking program that will let you pick the country's and add them by specifc IPs to your iptables deny

http://fixingtheweb.com/

It will block them from the entire server - If you have that level of access

Have been flooded recently with foreign spammers that register on my site and then don't do anything. They don't even come back to spam their post, but it's frustrating none the less. I also got hit hard by some hacker that found a hole in my server and uploaded a Bank of America phishing site to my server which then caused it to be shut down for 20 hours. I'm definitely going to try this fixtheweb.com solution.

EnIgMa1234 05-23-2007 04:59 PM

would that work for proxies though?

meissenation 05-23-2007 05:23 PM

The proxies that I've seen banned users use all resolve to China and Russia, so it might? It depends where the proxy resides, I'm guessing. I don't know if there are any open proxies in the US, if there are then they could still use those. I looked at the product that fixingtheweb offers and you can select which countries to allow and which countries to not allow. Thinking about banning pretty much every middle eastern country, china, russia, ukraine, turkey, etc. Friendly countries will be left alone and allowed through.

El_Muerte 05-23-2007 06:37 PM

there are more than enough 100% anonymous proxies all over the world, locking out "countries" is useless.

meissenation 05-23-2007 08:01 PM

I'm figuring locking out the countries coupled with https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthrea...xy+real&page=3 would be an efficient method. That way people who don't use proxies are blocked, and people who use proxies are blocked likewise. :D

Although this idea you have is pretty cruel, you should ideally block the IP addresses from known spammers, the proxies which you have mentioned and every country domain extension on this Wikipedia list you don't want registering:

meissenation 05-23-2007 09:00 PM

Is it really cruel when I host a regional website meant for people in one state in the US to be visiting? I mean sure, the more hits the better, but at the same time I can't say I'd feel bad for anyone in China or Russia that can't view my site. 98% of the people from China and Russia viewing my site are spammers or hackers, anyway.
