vB Ad Management 4

What does it do?

Features include global settings, advertisements allowing template conditionals, ad sharing and ad revenue sharing, timed advertisements, preset popular ad locations and functions such as sponsors, additional custom ad locations, random and static advertisements and its all very easy to use. You can use it for ordinary ads like adsense, banner rotations, or any content at all as well as using it to manage ads outside your forum too.

You can read in more detail about these and other features in the manual, which also contains some helpful notes and instructions, as well as the installation and upgrade instructions

If you are using autoinsertion and were using vB Ad Management before version 4.00, you will need to remove your old template edits or advertisements will appear multiple times. Just reverse the old instructions below.

Quote:

* Find <!-- post $post[postid] popup menu --> and paste $postbit_advertisement above it in your postbit & postbit_legacy templates.
* Paste $forumbit_advertisement at the bottom of your forumhome_forumbit_level1_post and forumhome_forumbit_level2_post templates.
* Paste $threadbit_advertisement at the bottom of your threadbit template.
* Paste $footer_advertisement at the top of your footer template.
* Find $spacer_close in your footer template and below it paste $rightcolumn_advertisement.
* Find &nbsp; in your header template and replace it with $header_advertisement.
* Find $spacer_open in your header template and below it paste $leftcolumn_advertisement.

I haven't tested it on 3.5, but it should work fine. Only one way to find out. :) Let me know if it does work and I'll post it in the 3.5 section too.

SkyCatcher 11-09-2006 04:19 PM

Looks nice. I'll check it out now.

Edit: Seems to work fine. Tested with 3.6.3.

Only downsides I see are 1) it doesn't use ajax so when quick replying the user will have to hit refresh to see the advertisement and 2) You can only add one advert.

It would be nice to be able to chose from different advertisements or simply have an x number of adverts you can add, say 10, and then have it chose a random advertisement to insert.

Overall it looks great and has a lot of options :)

topshams 11-09-2006 04:36 PM

Thanks for this, very interesting.

1) That hadn't occurred to me, I'll look into fixing that as soon as I work out how. Having said that, aside from not feeling "quite right" there's no pressing reason why an ad needs to be AJAXed with QR so I might leave it as it is.
2) It was really geared around something like Adsense where rotation is handled remotely but I'm open to allowing more in the future.

redlabour 11-09-2006 05:08 PM

Perfect !!! :D

But can we have a Function in the next Update please that let us choose how many different Banners will appear in a Rotation ?

See this : vbBannerRotator

Kaleem 11-09-2006 06:29 PM

Thank you worked out really good with 3.6.3 :)

sharjah 11-09-2006 07:07 PM

Thank you.

Mecho 11-09-2006 08:30 PM

Perfect . thanks a lot :)

Suggestion : Rotation Function would be a great option in next update ;)

oldfan 11-09-2006 08:45 PM

Slave 11-09-2006 09:21 PM

Yes, I'm seeing a pattern emerging here!

My intention is to expand the existing functionality to other areas of the forum outside the postbit in the next version - navbar, footer, threadbit, forumbit - plus a couple of minor extra features.

Then in the version after that I will have a look at rotations. :)

Slave 11-09-2006 09:33 PM

Not sure if it's something you'll agree too, but if you could expand that list to include some of the more used hacks like vBa, vBgallery and LDM that would be cool :)

(I know that navbar and footer might well cover them, its more a case of just checking that they work with them :))

WritersBeat 11-09-2006 10:06 PM

Just for people's notice, it's against google's policy to have adsense look like a post.

Shazz 11-09-2006 10:08 PM

On the first screen shot, is it a actual account?

AzzidReign 11-09-2006 10:13 PM

Wow, looks awesome! This should help a lot of people since there are many people wondering how to get ads btwn posts, in posts, etc. Good work.

djr 11-09-2006 11:38 PM

Flagged for later install. Thanks! Very interesting hack

maroceve 11-09-2006 11:56 PM

What would be nice is to implement a side banner too for skyscraper style, using an extra column or something !

I got google up and running on with ur add on :)

Thanks !

DavidL 11-10-2006 12:23 AM

+1 For the random adverts. I would LOVE to be able to set certain ads for certain forums. Ill just have to tinker with the code to see if I can do it. Nice mod and looking forward to more enhancements.

Lqd 11-10-2006 01:00 AM

Fantastic mod, easy to use, lots of options, thank you very much!

Mosaicvb 11-10-2006 01:19 AM

Awesome!. Flagged for later install.
Same comments as everyone else. rotating ads would be awesome and forum sensitive ads.

Thanks for taking the time to create this!

That has been debated elsewhere here if you search and some people have gotten written permission from Google to do that. Whether or not they had the Premium Adsense account I don't know.

Google's TOS states you shouldn't disguise your advertisements as content, which is not the same as giving them the same appearance as a post. They're very clearly labelled as advertisments in the code and not at all disguised as content, just stylised. Besides which I deliberately left out all the other paraphenalia (fake IP icon, report post, date/time etc) to remove ambiguity.

At any rate, just as it says when you're configuring that option in the mod you shouldn't enable that option unless you're sure it doesn't break TOS. It's up to the individual to ensure it doesn't, especially since it may be used for programmes other than Adsense.

No, just styled. You enter an optional avatar via the Ad Management CP and the "username" is just the title of your board.

Snake 11-10-2006 09:33 AM

Thanks!

Matt_270581 11-10-2006 10:15 AM

Great hack. I had another version of this but it stopped the Multi Quote from working when using Adsense ads. This works fine with the adsense and Multiquote :).

[high]* Matt_270581 installs.[/high]

Scormen 11-10-2006 10:45 AM

Works great, also in vb 3.6.3! Thanks!

Kris

farooqaaa 11-10-2006 01:05 PM

ahhh nice one :)

*installed ;).

thanks for sharing..

michaelsilvia 11-11-2006 06:39 AM

This is a great little hack! Thanks!

You are not violating Google Adsense rules for making it look like a post (unless you select that option), but you may get introuble for having "Sponsored Links" in the title. This is from the Google FAQ:

Quote:

Can I recommend referral products to my users?

Sure - you're welcome to endorse or recommend the products you're referring on your site. However, our program policies don't permit you to encourage clicks on or draw unnatural attention to the referral units you're displaying on your site.

More specifically, it's acceptable to use language such as "I use AdSense and recommend it to monetize your website." However, please avoid using language such as "Click here," "Visit these links to support our site," or other similar language.
And this is directly from the rules:

Quote:

Incentives
Web pages may not include incentives of any kind for users to click on ads. This includes encouraging users to click on the ads or to visit the advertisers' sites as well as drawing any undue attention to the ads. For example, your site cannot contain phrases such as "click here," "support us," "visit these links," or other similar language that could apply to any ad, regardless of content. These activities are strictly prohibited in order to avoid potential inflation of advertiser costs.
I would suggest allowing people to type in their own words or leave it blank from the ACP. Just my thoughts!

From Google Adsense Program Policies (https://www.google.com/adsense/suppo...=link&hl=en_US)

Quote:

Labeling Ads

Publishers may not label the ads with text other than "sponsored links" or "advertisements." This includes any text directly above our ads that could be confused with, or attempt to be associated with Google ads.

Biggles 11-11-2006 12:36 PM

Thanks a million, RedTyger, for putting in the time to set this one up. Great hack! Been waiting for something like this for ages, being one who has considerable difficulty with coding and where/how to insert ads in vB.

I can think of a number of great uses other than for Adsense and the like and will be setting it up on our sites today.

Cheers!

Nephalim 11-11-2006 03:27 PM

COOL AWESOME hack, but when I put my html code in it. the ad shows the html code? what did I do wrong?
thanks
example;
PHP Code:

[url=https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=131150]Like this[/url]

and it shows this code instead of just a hyper link.:surprised:

RedTyger 11-11-2006 03:36 PM

That's not HTML code, that's BBCode which is restricted to forum posts only. You must use proper (X)HTML code.

For what you wanted above, use:

Code:

<a href="https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=131150">Like this</a>
To have the link open in a new window, use:

Code:

<a href="https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=131150" target="_blank">Like this</a>

Oh...thank you much so!!!

bada_bing 11-11-2006 05:10 PM

With this hack can you display a different banner per forum? Example is if I have 10 sponsors I only want specific banners to show within certain sponsors forums so that sponsor A does not see sponsors B's banner Ads?

That's not a feature of this mod at the moment. There are a few other mods out that might do what you want though. Search for banners.

This is really only meant to deal with Adsense-style advertiements at the moment.

RedTyger 11-15-2006 02:34 PM

I changed my mind, random banner rotation will be in the next version, arriving soon.

If anyone has any feature requests, now is the time.

Garyk 11-15-2006 03:41 PM

Yes, and you will be able to use different code for each location.
