Why is this site so slow

I have not been coming here for a while now and then I started coming back and using this site again a couple months ago on a regular basis now and it is very very slow compared to what it use to be like. What happened in the last year that made this site so slow and are there plans for fixing it?

kall 09-30-2006 05:21 AM

This site performs as well for me now as it ever has.

da420 09-30-2006 05:50 AM

Same here. Seems to load fast.

Really? A good example would be this thread we are in right now. If I hit refresh it take this page 45 seconds to reload from start to finish. That is an awful long time for a refresh. I do not have this problem anywhere else or on vBulletin.

da420 09-30-2006 05:55 AM

Pressed reload, and it took no more than 3 seconds.

attroll 09-30-2006 06:02 AM

I wonder why I am getting this problem then? Maybe it is taking the long way and going through china to get to the vB.org server from where I live. It never use to though.

ged 09-30-2006 07:10 AM

Are you using dial up connection with a 9600 modem?

Marco van Herwaarden 09-30-2006 07:48 AM

Check your proxy settings to see if you are not going over some slow proxy server.

Also check your PC for malware.

It is not malware and I don't think it is the proxy settings because I am on DSL.

It does it on every computer I own.

Oh wait, It went back to normal. Everything is loading like it use to now. When I am in a large thread and go from page to page it moves right along again.

When I refresh still takes 45 seconds though. Must be something to do with the refresh.

peterska2 09-30-2006 08:45 AM

it's taking me 30 seconds on my cell so its running quicker than vB.com here

sezmar 09-30-2006 11:27 AM

This site is fine for me it loads in 1.315 secs

firstrebel 09-30-2006 12:09 PM

Many things can cause this. I also get a slow response from this site, even 'cannot find server' at times.

Since this does not affect everyone across the board you have to look at your connection. Many ISPs now have 20:1 and 50:1 connections, 50:1 being the standard. This means you share the connection with 49 others. You also have to look at the load on your local telephone exchange. My local exchange is usually showing 'severe congestion'.

It goes on...

Bob

That is not the case here, if it was then all the web sites I visit would be slow during the same time period and that is not happening. This is the only web site that I am having a problem with.

Is there any programs or test I can run to figure out what is causing the slow loading from the internet or where the slow down is coming from on the internet? It must be the internet because like I said this is the only web site I have problems with.

Do you have problems with vBulletin.com also..

Marco van Herwaarden 09-30-2006 05:41 PM

You could do a traceroute to see if there are any slow hops.

I was one step ahead of you and did this already. Here is a screen shot of what I got.

*ponders the meaning of life*

Working fine for me

*does trace route as well*

Dan 09-30-2006 10:35 PM

Seems your isp is doing something funny with your connection, does it show the same to all sites? Can you ping google.com and vbulletin.com for us?

MRGTB 09-30-2006 11:24 PM

strange one that, try using another style to view this site. And see if that changes things. I find this site as fast as always.

Hes using the most basic one..

da420 09-30-2006 11:26 PM

Looking from his traceroute that wouldnt matter anyways. Try other sites. It's probably your ISP.

MRGTB 09-30-2006 11:27 PM

if it was is ISP though, he'd be having problems with most other sites also. Not just this one.

da420 09-30-2006 11:33 PM

Not always.

If it was a problem with this site then more people would be experiencing the problem.

Could it possibly be a DNS issue?

Dan 10-01-2006 12:15 AM

If it was a DNS issue he wouldn't be able to access it, some ISPs tend to let more data or less data go through for certain websites.... At least i've noticed that from isp to isp.

attroll 10-01-2006 04:42 AM

It has picked up for me some this morning. Right now a refresh on this site is only taking 20 second instead of the 45 seconds that it was taking. I think it was because of the two routers that were down in Texas (Dallas) and Texas (Pampa). Hopefully it will improve some more.

faital 10-06-2006 05:03 AM

Hi, This post is very informative, however I would like some specific information. If someone can help me then please send me a private message. Best Regards,

Just for fun, since vb.org and vb.com are a little slow for me and they time out once in a while, I did a tracerout (after reading this thread) and here is what I got.

ZacUSNYR 10-06-2006 03:56 PM

This site whips right along for me :)

attroll 10-06-2006 04:45 PM

For me it loads the headers fairly quick but then to dogs right down. I have never had it timeout. But it can be really, really slow at times.

Dan 10-07-2006 07:13 PM

If you look at the tracert David you'll see where the *'s are is where it's timing out kinda, and looking at the hostmask says SBC which is probably your ISP which means ISP issues! :) At least that's what I remember how tracerts work....

Paul M 10-07-2006 08:01 PM

A few intermediate * are nothing to worry about if the final times are ok (and 70ms is fine, the average from the uk is over 110ms). What you also have to remember is that most routers give a very low priority to icmp requests, so pings and trace times from them can sometimes be misleading.

ymy 10-07-2006 08:49 PM

hi

this site is very fast form Saudi Arabia . One of bad lines and ISP in the world

test your internet line form

http://www.testmy.net/tools/test/d_load.php

I'll bring that up to my manager, considering I work for an ISP - that's coming from that ISP (we have a 10mb DS3 connection). ;) ...

davidw 10-07-2006 10:46 PM

Like I said... it was just for fun - I'm not complaining. Most any other sites work plenty fast for me (my bandwidth usage is not capped :P) Downloading files (especially in network) are much much higher than on my 4mb/1mb cable connection at home.

exact same thing for me.
I am on a 12Mbps connection too.
I had one * in my trace route for this hop dllsbbrj01-so000.rd.dl.cox.net [68.1.0.177]

vb.com seems fine tho.
