Problems with Hostgator anyone?
The past week or so I have had errors messages stating a storage issue so I called Hostgator.com and up'ed my plan. Now it is still going on to a lesser degree.
Anyone else having this problem with them? My forum is very small so I do not think it the storage. Dirtygrout.com Forumshttp://dirtygrout.com/forums/index.php |
I am paying for a dedicated server and have never had any problems. The support is great too.

actually i have changed my mind about hostgator. if you have a big forum they wont be able to support you unless your on a dedicated server or semi dedicated. www.idenfusion.com is there now but we have to move cause they cant take the attachment.php file. so if you run a forum , do not use them for big projects.

I'm fairly new here, but have been through three hosts in a year. First used 1and1.com, the absolute worst hosting company I've ever seen....our site was down constantly,45-60 minute phone waits for help....so we switched to HostGator, which worked great for about two months, then we started having database issues there. The people were rude, not very helpful, and our server problems got worse and worse. After checking with others who were using HostGator, it seems they have a real bad reputation dealing with sites that grow rapidly, as in they don't want to deal with them. They kept pushing us to upgrade to a Dedicated Server, even though at the time we were only using 10-20% of our resources.
We switched to InMotion hosting about 4 months ago, and I have to say they are the best I've ever seen. Using a V-Dedicated server, our site has been down once in four months, for 15 minutes while they did some maintenance. I highly recommend InMotion, but would never recommend HostGator or 1and1.com....just my .02 |
I havent had any problems yet with hostgator...

I found a buddy through the game planetside, and he is a hosting/domain reseller for hostgator, he gave me a site, and a URL for free with which to host our clan site.
our clan is dead for the most part but im still using the space free for doing some dev work with vbulletin, and have a dev board setup there. I have had no problems, and in fact one time while i was setting up my teamspeak module i noticed that they had the query port blocked that i needed. So i called them directly instead of talking to my buddy, and they instantly forwarded the port for me so the application would work. it happened in a span of about 5 mins. |
I use Hostgator and I have three of their "Semi-Dedicated" server plans (or what ever they are)... I have as many as 30-webstes on each server...
I have had this problem occur with my bigger forums and I havenot been able to figure out what causes it... It seems that somehow whenthe forums get a lot of use that the database doesn't get all it's memory free and after a while you get strange errors... if they don't reset something after a while your site will go down. My experience with a bigger board is that it seems to happen about every 4 to 6 months and after they reset the memory the site works fine again... I would love any feedback as to what this could mean as if there was a way I could turn off my site for an hour a month and run a QUERY or script to free up the memory I would do it in a second! |
So hostgator is very good for new forums?

Another annoyance is that they just completely disable my site when the site uses too many of their resources. They don't contact me with an email saying "Hey, your site is using too many resources... do something." In the last case which forced me to upgrade to semi-dedicated, they locked the permissions on my vbulletin folder so that no one could access it. My site was dead for 16 hours while I went through the process of their ticket system upgrading to semi-dedicated. |
Try http://www.CajunDirectWeb.com . They won't treat you wrong!
|
Just wanted to update, I went ahead and switched over to a dedicated server and cancelled all of my HostGator accounts. After having an affiliate program with them, I now ALWAYS recommend going with a company that won't screw you over.

well i host on hostgator..
had a bit of trouble setting up the board... their mysql creating area was horrible... but finally got everything set up, and now, the forum's running smoothly..:D |

Yeah. Overall, compared to the other hosts I've been with, I've found HostGator to be one of the more unprofessional hosts out there. I remember when I would chat with their tech support on AIM, they'd be all "Yo whats up." Yeahhh.. real professional. Not to mention the abrupt shutdowns and what not with no warning. And then you'd have to sit on tech support for hours just to find out why the site was shut down, they wouldn't even tell you upfront.
|
I've had a rough time with Hostgator as well. They started out great, when our site was small... but as we grew, they were HORRIBLE. They would randomly disable our entire site without warning, because it "used too many resources." Eventually, we were forced to upgrade to semi-dedicated.... I'm now looking for a better hosting option for the site, any suggestions?

wow that is a really bad customer service

im with hostgator and have had so many problems, i lost my entire database at one stage. My backups saved to the hosting space everything went and i didnt get anything back, i had to restartd my forum all over again.
And ive had it switched of more times than i can think off. my new forum isnt going as well as i wanted, 20k posts - 2k members in over 2months. There ticket system is crap, you have to wait hours for replies. I am thinking of changing, but to where? |
Just switched to hostgator and they want me to scan and mail in my Gov't id to get SSH access:down:
|
Is that something you feel is negative?
Personally i think it is a good thing. |
the details i see here are all funny to read...
someone have problem with the mysql creating area of hostgator, but they use CPanel, latest version without a style, so it is the exact same Cpanel that 75% of the host on the net use... someone have problems with backups and webspace, but do they follow the regular protocols ?!... i had to debug thousands of clients on hosts that had the same system than HostGator lately, and everybody complains because they lack of space.. the system lock their account when they overpass the limits they have... not only hostgator... if you pay for 10, you have 10, not 1 more... hostgator or not... too much connections on your shared account ?!... an account provided at 6.95$ per month is not the unlimited bullshit you see everywhere.. they apply limits and they are indicated... if you have 200 online members, do you seriously think you will have unlimited bandwidth ?!... hostgator apply the limits shown, compared to some lame hosts that indicate "unlimited" but they cap their bandwidth, so even if you have a lot of connections, they are slow to hell... upgrade your package and you'll be ok... don't want to pay for your service ?!.. sure go somewhere else. for willisbryan, if you want secure access to a server, do you seriously think they will provide it to you without verifying who you are ?!... if you have problems with that, maybe it's because you have something to hide... you prefer to have unsecure access then ?! ... most of the complaints about any hosts are made by people who want everything for free, everything with no limits, and everything they dream of... and most of the time, when the bugs occur, instead of asking for help, they complains and send flames to the person in charge, without even evaluating the job to be done... that'S why most of the time you get nothing in return... |
I have just moved to Hostgator... Surely can't be as bad as Bluehost.. :erm:
|
i've had downtime 2 days in a row with hostgator. Today and yesterday and i've only been open two weeks
|

and btw, if you can't reach your site, if others are able to reach it, it is not a downtime from the host but from your ISP... you have to check this before making a statement like this... it is more profitable to complain about a ISP than a host... :) |
i only put the ads in yesterday. nobody could reach the site for about 20 mins and after that it was very slow. nothing to do with the vb imo.

in the last weeks, a lot of host located in Texas and central usa were cut off from the world because of weather... floods and rain... nobody can do a thing about these... |
they were not global and yes i did ticket them. they said i should contact them next time it happens
|
i hope more webhost provide a quick MSN support tech whom we can contact on the fly for these bugs... lol
