Can we have a section for addictees ;)

Hi, My name is bashy and i'm a hackaholic

[high]* bashy thinks i need counselling:surprised: [/high]
[high]* bashy thinks many others do also;) [/high]

Perhaps a section for us with regards to helping us come off the hacks/mods
and providing support?

Is there anything we can do for withdrawls?

heres one for you....
I just got my board sorted (3.5.4) i knew it would be crazy to upgrade, there
was no real reason to upgrade, yet, what did i go and do?
Correct, i upgraded with drastic consequences, although peterska2 help me
out big time, of which i am eternally gratefull.....

Why did you upgrade, i hear you asking?

I really dont know, Perhaps its cause i have milked the 3.5 hacks dry and theres
some new ones for 3.6, I just couldnt help myself, really!!
I have loads of hacks installed, most i have prob forgot about, Most were installed
to see what they do and see if i might need it, Most were not even uninstalled
if i didnt like it lol.... I am always checking the portal to see if a new hack has
been produced, I must check at least 10 times a day, thats just a guess, i know
its a lot more than that lol

Is there a point to this thread/post, perhaps not, will i get slated for installing so many hacks, hell yeah lol

At least i can admit i have a problem, How many of you can say that then?

Ziki 08-20-2006 11:26 AM

I was one b4 but it was stupid.I uninstalled TONS of hacks and now it is all OK.Now I rather like making my own hacks :S

peterska2 08-20-2006 11:42 AM

I'll stand up and say that I know exactly where you are coming from. From 3.0.2 to 3.0.7 my site was that heavily modified it would take me two or three days to prepare the files for an upgrade. (Yes, I could have used a comparision programme but I've always been a do it by hand type person).

3.0.8 came out, and with it came a load of offline problems (Jelsoft always have bad timing with their releases for me) so it was a quick upgrade, install the one or two (or maybe 50) essentials, and leave it be. The same happened with 3.0.9 at which point the site upgrades got stuck until 3.5.0 (Gold I think).

With 3.5.0 I actually managed to get it down to about 100 modifications installed, which was quite manageable, and never really had any major problems.

Then my host had a major server problem and all my files and over half my database was erased. Time to find a new host quick, work on repairing this horrendously corrupt database in conjunction with a backup I had taken a few weeks earlier, and then start adding the modifications again.

Well, at this point, as a number of the modifications I was running were custom ones that I had just wrote on the fly and never documented, a good amount were lost. So again I just installed the essentials and got it down to about 50.

Then with 3.6 I've been able to get rid of some of the modifications I had that have been made obsolete with the features in 3.6 and am now running quite happily at about 25 modifications installed.

I think really that the major version upgrades teamed with the big server disaster of 2006 made me re-evaluate what we actually needed on the site and just get rid of any stuff that we didn't need.

Mind you, I'm still constantly tweaking something. If anyone ever wants me for anything then they know that the best place to look first is deep inside the style manager burried in a load of conditionals (seriously, most people cry when they see some of my conditionals as they are that complex).

bashy 08-20-2006 12:08 PM

lol....i know all about it ;)

Perhaps 1 day the novelty will wear off....

To be honest, If i knew what i was doing i would most prob start a fresh, import the needed database parts, such as users, posts and so on and go from there.
But thats easier said than done, With all the hacks installed its also added tables in the user section as well, this is where i would bin the lot lol

Anyway at least i aint been the only 1 :)

Chris M 08-22-2006 11:54 AM

At one point I was running almost every vB2 hack in existence on my board :)

Chris

I tend to use functional hacks; hacks with a purpose. Only a handful of hacks that are fun-based exists if anything. My primary interest, however, is templating (and tweaking as peterska2 stated) the forum. For me, hacking is cool and all but it doesn't mean a thing if vB looks anything out-of-box. What catches the eye is the template/style/design; everything else becomes secondary. :)

Well, sticking to the original subject matter of this thread I've digressed...

TwinsForMe 08-26-2006 11:12 PM

I'm getting sucked in again.

MentaL 08-26-2006 11:34 PM

hackaholics anonymous..

1st rule of hackaholic is admit you are powerless to hacking

wtricks 08-27-2006 11:14 AM

I am Ramona and i'm also a hackaholic. I had my forums on phpBB and installed 50+ hacks on it. now I moved to VB and the first thing I did was to look hacks to install :D

bashy 08-27-2006 11:44 AM

tbh i am terrible i am checking for new ones all the time....
is it just me or has the release of new hacks slowed right down :(

tinkerbell 08-28-2006 10:50 AM

For a year I was content to just run a forum and use the settings in the admincp but since I got my own vb in april and found this site I cant stop, although I do only install hacks that are neccessary and if I want one that isnt I tend to find reasons why it is.

My forum is where I want it at the moment but I hear the call to upgrade to 3.6.0 and so far resisted but I know I will have to do it eventually lol.

I am hooked I dont have time to post on my forum because like peterska2 I am normally to be found in style manager at very least admincp or here .

Great thread Bashy btw.

I must be the only person who hasn't got a single hack installed. But still, I upgraded, screwed up all my templates (which I eventually fixed) even abandoned 2 styles because I couldn't be bothered fixing them. :)

I was only ever going to upgrade once 3.6 went gold. Did I need to? No I didn't but I still did. :P

edit: Section for addicts? definetely, and the "hugging area" I suggested when you finally made that final fix after the upgrade.

OMG, this is hysterical!! What a huge relief to know it's not just me!:erm: I'm always on the look-out for something to add to my vb 3.6.4! Mind you, I know I don't have as many as Bashy, but I fear I one day will, cuz I can't seem to stop! I'm totally addicted!

Thank you, Bashy, for making this thread! Is there a 12-step program available for peeps like us?:erm:

harmor19 04-11-2007 08:07 PM

If you're going to test out hacks then do so on a test vb.

rjmjr69 04-11-2007 09:16 PM

Hello, Robert!!

*Deezelpope whispers...Hey Robert...I never log out!* :D

harmor19 04-11-2007 09:29 PM

But some people said they installed hacks just to see what they did. If you don't know what the hack actually does install it on a test forum first to see if you like it.

deezelpope 04-11-2007 09:33 PM

Ahhhhhh, I see...hehehe. I just thought it sounded kinda funny, right in the middle of our addiction convo. Had me scratching my head...:p

Hey Harmor! Are YOU addicted?? C'mon, 'fess up!

:( I didnt want to say it but ME TOO......... I guess the first step in all this is ADMITTING you have a problem right? So does that mean I get my first day chip? HAHHAHAHA someone write a mod for VB junky's to monitor their log ins here and maybe set a timer....lol

Not really. I never had that many hacks installed. I think the most I ever had was 25 at one time.

deezelpope 04-11-2007 09:41 PM

Awww, Robert, there's no shame in it! But, SHHH, don't tell my husband!! I'm supposed to be doing housework! LOL!!!

Honestly, do you really consider it a problem? I like to consider it educating myself...never too old to stop learning!

Hmmm...Harmor could do it, couldn't you? Make a mod like Robert's talking about?:p

Were some of them fun ones, I hope?

Never Too old to Learn. Just one of those things that should not come across your mind EVER. Always strive to learn at least one new thing a day. Thats my thoughts on that....lol

I'm so happy to see that I'm not "DIFFERENT" and all those nasty things my wife has said to me are not true.............LOL :D

deezelpope 04-12-2007 12:09 AM

LOL!!! Nahhh, you're not different...no different from anyone else I've ever met...well, maybe a little more funny and kind and willing to share a laugh! Some peeps here take themselves WAAAY too seriously...ever notice that? I feel really out-of-place most of the time!:erm:

And, uh, yeah, I'm still here...:p

Oh yeah, I'm always trying to learn something new here...and darn proud of myself when I do!!:o

rjmjr69 04-12-2007 12:30 AM

LOL No I do not have the INSTANT email notification set.....
Either that or I have not left maybe both who knows.........

Yes I agree there are allot of uptight people around these woods. But nothing out of the ordinary for a semi public forum with SMART people scrutinizing other smart persons work. Actually now that I think of it sounds like High School nerd fight right?

deezelpope 04-12-2007 12:35 AM

LOL!! I don't have it set either...just kinda bored! Satisfied my hack-urge this morning!

Oh, yes, this place is definitely nerd-heaven!! As for the nerd fight...it's a fight to see who can be the biggest!! Not that there's anything wrong with that...;)

UltimateOreo! 04-12-2007 01:37 AM

Oh my god.. where to start? When I first got vbulletin, vb 3.6 just about came out, sometime last fall or winter. I installed about 40 template mods and over 90 addons. Half of my board was incompatible with itself and the other half was so overloaded it would blind you. I would like to bring back an old saying I was taught a while back-

K.I.S.S.

For anyone who knows what that means, that is the solution to your addictees forum. Not a forum, just an easily comprehendable phrase.

deezelpope 04-12-2007 01:55 AM

LOL!! You're funny...you really are! Typical guy, thinking of a solution when one hasn't been asked for. What would you coders do without people like us? You wouldn't have anything to do, and be bored silly, that's what. Hahaha...:D

BTW, I do know what KISS means...but you can do that without being boring!;)
