30 Templates Require Updating?
I just went from 3.5.4 to 3.6.0 and now I see this message
There are currently 30 customized template(s) that need to be updated or reverted. Some sections of vBulletin may not function if you do not do this! Where in the world do I begin to update these templates so they are functional but still look the same so I don't lost their style. |
download this program "Beyond compare" http://www.scootersoftware.com/. It will let you compare the codes line by line, it's very easy. I upgraded my whole site using this and I had about 45 templates. It takes a bit time I know, but if you're like me, you don't want to lose any customizations.
Also one other thing, cause I just upgraded to 3.6 last night. The message says that some areas may not function correctly, but that doesn't mean all of those templates that they mention. Some templates that you need to keep a lookout for and must update is, postbit, showthread, forumdisplay, forumhome headinclude, navbar These templates along with a few others have the new ajax features and javascript codes that you need to add. But if you download the program I mentioned above, your work will be much easier. |
Ok thanks alot. I will give that a shot.

Mind explaining to me just how you used this program to compare code in the templates vs what needed to be changed?
|
Sure, however, I'm going to explain it briefly first and see if you can get it to work.
1- Open two notepad, save one of them as "old.html" and save the other one as "new.html". 2- In the "old.html" file, paste the code of the old template. In the "new.html" , paste in the new template. You can get the new template code by either reverting the template or by looking at the vbulletin's default style. 3- Once you have the templates saved in old.html and new.html, open Beyond compare and compare the files. 4- Look for pink/red highlights, the red highlights are the differences between the codes. 5- Once you see the differences, you can either right click the lines and copy them to the other side, or you can edit the lines yourself and make the adjustments. Hope that wasn't too confusing :paranoid: |
Why download a program? There is a compare function in VB itself.
|
Beyond compare is nothing like the internal 1...try it and you will see :)

I've got the program. but where the heck do I find the templates to compare?
|
templates are not stored as files, you have to get them from your admincp and save the two version in notepad, dreamweaver,...
|
got it thanks
ok. I'm confused. i have my 2 files opened side by side. Things don't line up. for ex: If the left side has 5 lines that need to go the other file, and the right side has 4 lines and then 4 more lines of different code, when I move the 5 lines it covers the 1st line of the second set of 4. If I insert a blank line, it does so on both sides which messes up the left side and moves everything so I don't know where it goes. Any of this make sense? |
can you attach both of the templates here so I can take a look? thanks.
|
focus on lines 28-29.
|
hmm it's kind of hard to read the lines with all the /tab /tab /tab, where did you copy past the templates from?
|
the tab crap is what 3.6 installed.
|
Actually sean S your directions are spot on and this program is working great. However by correcting my templates I am making it look more like the regular default theme and thats not what I want :(. I am using a theme I purchased from eXtremepixels and by editing the template so that it matches and there are no more pink spots I am ruining the theme :(
