Google Hosted Email

Hey all! I was just wondering how many other BB owners have been able to get hold of a Google Hosted Email account? What's your opinion?

I got selected and am now able to offer @mydomain Gmail accounts to my members. I have to admit it is fantastic; a joy to use and so much better than ANY other member email system in my opinion!

One less resource to worry about as well!

I've beening using it for quite a while now but only for staff members, I think its the best option out there, I think MS offer something similar called live domain? not sure now as I was about to signup but then found google :)

I know I am limited to 25 accounts, which is more than enough I'm not sure at what point they might start charging?

FleaBag 07-08-2006 04:28 PM

I waited months for a reply (I didn't mind, I wasn't expecting one) - I was overjoyed. They aren't on general distribution on my site yet, I'm limited to 100 accounts. I've given it out to supporting members and bands so far, but plan to use up about 90, and keep a few spare incase I get any staff in future.

I haven't seen or heard anything about the MS offering. Not that I hate MS, I have a Windows Mobile - it's just I get uncomfortable and upset when I think about Hotmail. On that MS suck. I got Hotmail back when it was independant - when it came to MS ownership I was happy for a while... But not for long, they ruined it. I thought I'd be able to keep my Hotmail for life - I feel like that about Google now. In Google I trust heh. :D

I've been approved as well -- I haven't explored it yet.

I just set up all my senior members with accounts last weekend, I'm just trying to figure out how to send them their log in info.

What I find to be very cool is that if you have the Google toolbar and enable the Send with Gmail option, you can change that to use your Google hosted email account.

Kohhal 08-28-2006 12:19 PM

I just found out about this last week and got approved for an account yesterday so will be setting this up this week, looks great though. I use Gmail for all my personal mail anyway so this could be great for my members.

The fact that they can chat and see each other online should be a great addition too :)

Google Guru 08-28-2006 07:29 PM

I didn't even know this was out lol :D

if only there was jabber support in vbulletin (jwchat?). that's one of the sexiest features of phpbb IMO. I don't know what jelsoft is waiting for.

tinkerbell 08-31-2006 01:52 PM

Thanks guys, saw this thread, applied and got it this morning, havent explored it yet but looks perfect for our site.

I've had it for some time, but don't really use it that much. It's a nice option though.

optrex 08-31-2006 02:47 PM

Where do you apply for it?

EricaJoy 08-31-2006 03:52 PM

eXtremeTim 09-01-2006 11:55 PM

Now thats something googles is gonna give you 1000 accounts with 2gb of storage space. Google is out to control us all thats all there is to it. ;)

MentaL 09-02-2006 10:15 AM

Mine are only for subscribers tho :)

Roms 09-03-2006 03:02 AM

I just setup accounts for frequent members and staff and PM'd them the info with a temp password and all needed info. I also posted an announcement that anyone who wanted an account could PM or E-mail me. :)

I'm going to try this one out too: http://domains.live.com/

Shazz 09-04-2006 04:26 AM

I've gotten Google Hosted email accounts for my website, 30 account maximum. I use it for my staff members only though.

dougeetx 09-06-2006 03:01 AM

I'm in on this! I got 1000 addresses! PM me on my site at http://www.RealityTVFriends.com if you want your email. My question, though, would be where would my users go to sign in to their accounts? Gmail.com ??

Nevermind! I created a user and got the signin link. Can someone write the code so that it's an option in the navbar on 3.6.0, purty please?

Erwin 09-06-2006 06:20 AM

The Google one doesn't allow general users to sign up, whereas MSN seems to allow it...

FleaBag 09-09-2006 05:47 PM

I noticed that too Erwin. A bit of a bum considering when you sign up with Google you agree to use it for a year. Still not wanting to go anywhere near Hotmail though... I'm sure Google will change in time? I hope so. :)

SaintDog 09-10-2006 03:03 AM

I just signed up for my new website and entered in that I'd like 500 and was accepted automatically. Just need to setup the MX changes :).

robertuss 01-09-2007 01:58 PM

does anyone have a hack to syncronize the vbulletin-users with the google accounts?
when I have 1.000 of my users enlisted with googlemail, I can spend several hours each week updating stuff, like kicking banned users etc...

FleaBag 01-09-2007 02:12 PM

They have recently added a lot of very neat features, such as using your own domain, calendar e.t.c.

I don't think such a hack is possible at this time, Google offer no kind of API for hosted services at present.

It would essentially need to be a program that would run on your box or server which would log itself in to the system and be able to navigate the links and functions automatically.

robertuss 01-09-2007 03:32 PM

but they have this thing where you can submit a CSV list... that should help.
does anybody have experience with it?
