Looking for a new host.

I am looking for a new host for my vBulletin forums. I would like one that is fast, reliable, and with good customer/technical support. SSH access is a HUGE Plus.
Gonna have a few other things so I need at least 5 gigs of web space, and a nice chunk of bandwidth wouldn't hurt. ;) I have about 50 active members and my site is growing. My budget is 10-15 bucks a month. I can maybe spring to $20 if it looks well worth it. :D

Can you all reccommend me a good host(s) that might work for me?

Thanks in advance.

You want 5-10% of the harddrive for 20 bucks a month? I doubt you are going to find reliable hosting at that price for what you want.

da420 06-24-2006 02:26 PM

Well, I was kind of looking at this plan from RealWebHost, http://c.net/hosting.php . Anyone have any experience from them, and know if they are good?

Also found a few cheaper VPS's, but dunno if I can fit them in the budget. What do you guys think of these ones?

Before choosing a webhost i do suggest you research if there are any user experiences posted at either vbulletin.com or webhostingtalk.com

da420 06-24-2006 07:18 PM

Ive been doing some research and I think as far as VPS solutions go I think I am going to go with PowerVPS. I just want to know which package would be sufficient for my site. I was thinking about getting the LINUX WEBMIN POWER-0 $25 dollar plan. I just want to know if any one else has this plan and would recommend it, or something better. :D

Hi

Perhaps you should take a look www.westhost.com
I use them for a semi dedicated (atm) costing about $60 or so...
Tis a little steep but there CS is really good...

da420 06-24-2006 07:51 PM

I wish I could afford $60 a month. Thanks anyways bashy.

Do you think thier June Special plan would be a good solution for me? It really sounds almost too cheap to be true.

bashy 06-24-2006 09:10 PM

If it will suit you then go for it m8 i cant fault them, i am going to a fully dedicated with them next weekend :)

If you do go with them, can you mention bashys-place.com
Dont know if i will get out but its worth a try, in for a penny an all that pmsl.... :)

Yes, If I decide to make the switch to them you will surely be my referrer. Thanks :D

asking for SSH access unjailed is something you wont find on a shared hosting account.. your best off going for a managed VPS. I suggest jaguarpc.com VPS (very affordable, and well managed). A shared host most likely will shut you down for using up too many resources on the server..

Thank you. I in fact did end up going with them and will be working on moving my site over there tommorow. :D

With $65/month you also get a whole dedicated server.
eg.
AMD Sempron 2500+
(Savvis Datacenter - Fort Worth, TX)
1GB DDR RAM
80GB Hard Drive
Private VLAN
5 IP Addresses (usable)
1000GB Premium Bandwidth

Zachery 06-25-2006 09:11 AM

Bad move, you got a econonmy class processor, think celeron. Everything else is ok though.

dan35 06-25-2006 09:23 AM

That price's really a bargain for that server. If you're looking for a single core Intel P4 or AMD Athlon 64, you should raise ur budget at least to $100 :) (or a dual core to $150).

Semprons outperform Celerons, but a 2.8 GHz P4 will out perform a Sempron (say 2800+). Think of an old Sempron as an Athlon XP, as they are basically the same chip. New socket 754 semprons are athlon64 base with some cache turned off.
Semprons make pretty good entry level servers, better than Celerons. However, if you need good performance go for a P4 2.8 or an Athlon 64.

Zachery 06-25-2006 02:37 PM

754 are anything but new, the socket was dead when it started, and what good is lots of horse power without the ability to do anything. Cache is possibly the most vital part of a processor esp when doing things for mysql etc.

a Semperon server is a waste.

Might not be what you're looking for, but figured I'd throw my hat in to the circle.

If you're interested, I can probably get you the first month free to see if you like it or not...

Just take a look at the webpage of the manufactor of the processors.

AMD: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/...30_118,00.html
Athlon/Sempron are desktop processors, not designed to power a server.
Server processor = Opteron

Intel: http://www.intel.com/products/proces...uct_Processors
Itanium 2, most Xeon's, and high-end Pentium-4/D are designed as server processor.

Give em a try: http://anonx.net/

<a href="http://www.siteground.com" target="_blank">www.siteground.com</a> is pretty good and cheap. Check out their features

That's very nice, and money is not a problem :)

I can't say enough good things about PowerVPS:

http://www.powervps.com/plesk-vps.php

They've been rock solid and the support is excellent, been with them for about 6 months with sevenstring.org after dropping 1and1 for abysmal service. I also used to run club3g.com, which has over a million posts, and currently still runs just fine on their midlevel Plesk Power package.

You aren't going to get stable, quality hosting with the kind of space and features you're looking for for $20 a month. The base Plesk Power for $45 is probably the best around that you'll find for what you're looking for, and gives you tons of room to expand and host other sites/DNS/mail as well.

Good luck.

mdavis1984 07-23-2006 01:48 AM

i suggest you go here
http://www.ipowerweb.com/products/index.html

just so you know my site is hosted on dual 2.8 ht xeons "it is also my home pc dell poweredge 1600sc"

BiReL41r 07-26-2006 08:05 AM

Well, I have been through a ton of webhosts, and the best I've found are;

www.dreamhost.com (Requires CC, but has AWESOME deals)

and

http://www.hostingdepartment.net

Have at it!

cerjam 08-02-2006 08:22 AM

I corun this hosting company, and run the dedicated servers myself

http://hostinsanity.com

If you purchase a 'insane' package, i'll bump the space to 3 gigs for free, as we're somewhat limited on space.

How about custom-computerz.com
