Should AJAX be OFF?

Is it better to have the AJAX features turned on or off for large trafficked forums? Which will help save the servers?

noppid 06-21-2006 07:48 PM

Seems AJAX would reduce load as it loads fewer full pages.

amykhar 06-21-2006 07:52 PM

Google gmail uses it and I'm sure they get tons of traffic :D

I wouldn't use any ajax that autorefreshes on a timer, but the stuff built into vbulletin seems fine.

Xorlev 06-23-2006 11:16 AM

It actually reduces load, as you're not generating the entire page...just plugging some variables into outputted tags and making the user's browser update the page accordingly.

AJAX will not cause a big hit in server load unless you install something that nails the server every few seconds. I don't think any default AJAX features will cause you any trouble.

Are your users experiencing slow-down? (Especially on the thread pages?)

Do this: Log-in, go to a thread page, Press REFRESH

Does the browser say DONE but there is a delay between the header loading and the rest of the page? If so PM me.

BigSoccer Tech. 06-24-2006 12:10 PM

no, not really. someone just told me once that on a forum as big as bigsoccer that ajax would be a terror.

Razasharp 06-24-2006 12:19 PM

shoot forgot to say, you must use IE when doing that speed test (the majority of your users will be using IE)...

BigSoccer Tech. 06-28-2006 01:33 PM

still loads fine

Razasharp 06-28-2006 01:46 PM

You have to be logged in and press refresh on a thread page whilst using IE to see it properly - I did the test logged out and still saw the problem...

BigSoccer Tech. 06-29-2006 02:12 PM

i did it an can't replicate what you are telling me.

can you be less cryptic and tell me what problem you are speculating about and what you see. the page lods fine for me logged in .

Razasharp 06-29-2006 02:27 PM

I'll PM u when I get 2 mins.

lazytown 07-03-2006 06:07 AM

I have seen this occur rarely, usually when my internet connection is slow to begin with (connectivity problems).

Whats so mysterious about it that it cant be posted in public?

Is it the fact that IE renders tables a little differently and usually takes a half second from the time the header loads to load the rest of the page?

creativepart 07-03-2006 03:32 PM

Yeah, IE "hangs" on page load much more than Mozilla.

then again google has a datacenter worth of servers dedicated to gmail and software that specifically is engineered to work on their multi-tiered server architecture.

Ajax hav not any bad effect

Troy Roberts 08-05-2006 01:05 AM

I have ajax turned on and it only seemed to help reduce the sever load. Stands to reason as you end up saving page loads.
