Illegal Hackers!!!!

Where is the best place to report them? Preferrably somewhere that has an ENGLISH site or phone. My buddy's site just got hacked and I just tracked down everything I need. Wasn't too hard since they left hints all over the place and their (the hackers) site is out in the open. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

raa whats the site they hacked?

Dan 06-11-2006 12:57 AM

Best thing to do is to seek legal action against them, there's no place really to report them.

This recently happened to me too, in fact is why I'm no longer Rukbat on the forum here, was a mess to get straightened out.

Think youshould contact the authorities of the country your server is hosted in. I am sure your hosting company can assist you with that.

Revan 06-11-2006 10:01 AM

Or you could try reporting them to their ISP's, if you managed to get a hold of their IP addresses.

Servers get hacked all the time. I'd estimate that over half of the windows server boxes on the internet have been hacked at some stage. The trick is finding a host that keeps the software to date, keeps the network secure from LAN attacks, and making sure that the idiot who runs the box doesn't run any form of VNC.

Beller 06-11-2006 12:07 PM

You say windows server boxes? Would you consider Linux more secure?

Dean C 06-11-2006 12:56 PM

Not as such, the main reason why windows server boxes get hacked is because the admins run things such as VNC, and old versions of MSSQL and MySQL. These three alone are by far the most common reason why servers get exploited. Once a hacker is on your box they try and patch the vulnerability they used to get on it, and that's a lot harder to do in Linux than Windows. But at the end of the day, anyone who is experienced in hacking will be able to hack any box if there is a vulnerable piece of software running on it.

Just stay up to date with your software and make sure your hosts network is secure, as often the admin password for boxes is the same on windows which means if one box is compromised on your little LAN, yours could be too.

My site was hacked once, although it didn't do much damage, just one person getting into others accounts and PM me threating to do bad stuff.
oh well, i think it was not my hosts fault though...
sue them or get them arrested or something

Sean S 06-11-2006 06:12 PM

If you live in U.S. and if they live in U.S., best way to go is file a lawsuit, but if they live in countries such as Russia, then there isn't much that you can do or if there is, it's probably going to cost more following them than just leaving them. Don't know.

Nice website btw. Is it a template or your work :)?

There really is little point in reporting most hackers, even if they reside in the same country as your server. For every hacker you report, there will be another 1000 out there capable of doing the exact same thing. I'm not saying, don't abide by the law and report criminals, i'm saying don't put your servers in the vulnerable position in the first place :)

Agreed! It's hard to find a host that keeps the software to date nowsaday. They even refuse your requests to update the software though. My sites are small, but I'm running them on dedicated servers rather than on shared boxes. I can update/patch the software anytime.

Thank you for the kind words Dean :). No it is not a template, it's been a while that I have been working on the new site/look and I have finally released the beta version of it, yesterday.
