Off topic Stuff from Mentor Thread - and discussion of staying on topic

Me, being older and wiser, should be Boofo's mentor :p

Peter can be mines ;)

I think I'll take my chances with noppid. You are too mean to us older people. :(

:( I have no choice, it's so tempting!

On a serious note, i'm not old at all. However, i can indeed use my experience and knowledge in order to perhaps be a mentor for someone if they'd like. I wouldn't mind.

Nope. Remember the old adage? "Keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer?" :cross-eyed:

Could we please get back on topic.

Ohiosweetheart 06-09-2006 11:00 AM

*Back on topic*

I think this is a really good idea... if it can be implemented and people actually follow through.

noppid I want you as my mentor

Yeah this thread is really important. Let's not let any one have any fun.

Come on steve, do you really think it was necessary to admonish these posters?

Silly little slaps on the wrist like like this take up time that more important issues could have been addressed in. But you choose to admonish rather then say, wow, to someone, that could be a great idea, let's get back on topic and talk more about.

Let's see Boofo has some fun, Boofo Quits and Steve says get back on topic in a thread that was having sucess for the poster. Great management with strange coincidences surrounding it.

This should spawn a few new feedback threads itself. Are you people that disconnected? Everytime one of you big bosses micro manages, this place slides backwards. There is overwheling eveidence of this, yet the process, despite being a failure, is repeated over and over.

I agree.
Would you be my mentor, noppid?
:flashes with my long eyelashes, that i dont have:

tgreer 06-09-2006 04:13 PM

I find myself, incredibly, in disagreement with you in this instance, noppid. I'm shocked at how many threads here disintegrate into one-liners and off-topic comebacks, usually as a result of staff postings (the very group who is supposed to moderate).

I read this thread expecting to find some worthwhile suggestions about mentoring, which is of interest to me because, with the main and most worthwhile coding discussion locked and barred, and not likely to change, a "mentoring" program would give this site some other valid reason to exist.

Instead, we get more Boofoonery.

noppid 06-09-2006 04:13 PM

I just think the post was a Morale killer. We're trying to turn Morale around here, not slide backwards.

You really need to lighten up and relax. Too much serious talk evberywhere gets a little dull and usually leads to name calling (like you seem to be good at here now) and a lot of hate being spewed about.

tgreer 06-09-2006 04:24 PM

I would rather see serious, productive posts focused on the business at hand, than thread after thread of pointless nonsense. If I want lame jokes, I'll eat a Popsicle.

I have nothing against light-hearted, morale-boosting threads. I think it's the cart-before-the-horse, though, to focus on levity at the expense of productivity. Get the cart back on the track, and I think you'll find that morale will improve as a natural by-product.

To that end: while the mentoring idea has merit, I think the purpose could be served just as well, if not better, by opening up the Coders Discussion forum. Why have a series of one-to-one relationships? This is supposed to be a community, which implies communal learning. I think any mentoring program would quickly descend into "teach me to be like you". Where would you start? How much better it would be to learn by seeing on-going discussions, on a variety of design and coding topics, to watch how a plugin author goes about his/her business.

In short, the very idea of a mentor system tells us that some want this site to be more than a hack download/install/support site. They want it to be a place to learn about vBulletin customization, and the best way to do that is to hold the conversations in the open, where all can benefit.

What a funny word. I like that. I also like the way "Boofoonery" is.
So i think i join him, in the "Boofoonery" Club.
Everything doesent have to bee dead serious all the time. And this place has hade to mutch of it.

tgreer 06-09-2006 04:26 PM

Boofo - please refrain from telling me what I need to do. You're not my therapist, and have no idea if I'm tense or relaxed. On the other hand, I'd welcome any comments you have about the mentoring idea, which is the topic of this thread.

Lottis - Be as silly and light-hearted as you like; I believe the site has a "lounge area" just for that purpose... this thread's subject is "Suggestion: Mentors". If you have thoughts on that matter, please share them, rather than light-heartedly boosting your post count.

noppid 06-09-2006 04:32 PM

tgreer, I sense a bit of too much seriousness suddeny.

I considered this thread a success when it spun off to a new thread of exactly what the original poster wanted.

I don't think we needed daddy to get us back on topic. If there was more interest, I'm sure someone else would have said they have a thread they would like help in even though there were a few lighthearted posts "off topic".

Bullwinkel: Hey Rocky. watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.

Rocky: That's not a rabbit!

Boofo 06-09-2006 04:32 PM

@ tgreer - Well maybe you should grow up then and stop then name calling. Is that possible? I have not attacked you in any way ever, I would appreciate the same respect in return.

Silly ore not. I find you actually more silly.
My postcount means shit fore me, does it meen anyting fore you?

Fore the matter, i think the "mentor" idea is great, thats why i asked noppid to be mine.
Darn, you are one bitter man.

tgreer 06-09-2006 04:44 PM

So it spun off to another thread? Where? I'd like to read it to see where the suggestion has gone. Like I said, I think it has merit. I'd like a mentor to teach me all about DataManagers. In public, so others could follow along and learn vicariously.

Again, I have no problems with light-hearted discussions, but not right smack in the middle of every thread that comes along. When a thread ceases to be on topic, it's time for a moderator to split it off.

I see nothing wrong with a moderator/admin asking everyone to keep on-topic. I think this place needs more of that. That post boosted my morale. I'm sorry for ruining everyone's fun, but I read this thread because I was interested in "Suggestion: Mentors", not dancing bananas.

Nor have I called anyone a name here. I did make a pun, "Boofoonery". I thought it was clever and light-hearted. Lottis evidently agreed. But if it offended you, please accept my apologies. However, again I have to ask you in return to address the topic, rather than misconceptions you have about me, my age, etc. My only goal here, whether you believe it or not, is to see this place reach its full potential as a productive, professional site focused on vBulletin customization. Yes, I've been hard on you. I'm of the opinion that staff should be held to higher standards, work to keep things on-topic and productive, and it seems to me that you have been doing just the opposite. Rather than see it as a personal attack and retaliate in kind, see it as constructive criticism, which you can choose to take, or not, as you please.

smacklan 06-09-2006 05:36 PM

boofo...please PM me any IM addresses you have...I'd love to engage in boofonery with you...btw,I understand completely but I think it sucks you've resigned...you were one bright spot that I could always rely on in times of crisis here.

Ohiosweetheart 06-09-2006 05:47 PM

WOW... tgreer you really DO need to lighten up hun. It's not your place to tell people where to post, nor what to post. If you want to jump on Boofo for lightening up the thread, then you better jump me too, since I was playing as well. And I shall continue to do so ;)

Yes, but what's new?

As for being back on topic, does an admin or anyone have any input on if/when/how this will happen?

As your mentor, I feel responsible to tell you that should be a new topic. :)

I expect posts that attack a person, not a persons actions or the topic, are subject to removal however.

No, and I think this is a good opportunity to take this in the direction we want to take it despite the staff.

We are the community and I don't think we need anyone's permission to organize a network of helpful members to help those in need.

amykhar 06-09-2006 06:08 PM

Ok. I've got this open again, hoping you all can work it out without personal insults.

I can go off topic with the best of them, but a valid idea was getting lost in the other thread. Thanks for understanding.
