BBCode: [fieldset]

Due to the recent announcement of Internet Brands telling they are suing XenForo, I decided to immediately stop updating my vBulletin modifications, because I am not supporting this action.

What is fieldset, or what does it do?

good2laugh 07-14-2006 07:24 PM

cool thanks I like this :)

cheesegrits 07-18-2006 02:43 AM

Excellent little mod. True value for effort, only took 2 minutes to set up, works like a charm.

Nobody else answered this one, so I guess I'll give it a shot.

The fieldset code lets you create a border, or frame, around a given chunk of text in your post, with a title ("legend") embedded in the top line of the border. The border has rounded corners. And as with all (well, most) bbcodes, it can be used in conjunction with other bbcodes. So in this case, you could have your framed chunk of text be in a different font, size, color, whatever.

The way this mod works is, it gives you an extra button (in with the code, quote and php buttons). You select the text you want framed, and hit the button. It then asks you for the title (legend) to embed in the border at the top.

This is an excellent way of hiliting certain text, or creating footnote type annotations, or simply for decorative effect. I highly recommend it.

No problem. Like i said in my first post, this is one of the best "value for time" mods I've ever applied. 5 minutes work gets us a very useful stylistic addition to WYSIWG'ing our posts. And anything I can do to encourage people to install this is my way of saying Thank You. Heck, I'd like to see them add this bbcode to vborg itself.

One question ... is there any way we can constrain the width of the fieldset, rather than it automatically assuming X% of the width of the containing object?

For instance, if I use it to provide a fieldset frame for a thumbnail with some descriptive text, like this:

Attachment 51409

... which is fine, only I'd like to have the fieldset wrap around just the content, with a little padding, without stretching right across the post.

I'm probably being lazy here. I'm sure if I dug aorund I could find if there are any other options that can be given to the fieldset tag. But I was hoping you might just have that info in your short term memory cache. :D

Installed and modified. :D

This is actually as close to an exact copy as I could make of the "fieldset" used in the MEMBERINFO template:

Code:

<table cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0"><tr><td><fieldset class="fieldset"><legend>{option}</legend><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="3" border="0"><tr><td>{param}</td></tr></table></fieldset></td></tr></table>
Of course, you can paste the following to include the optional step (don't forget to modify the CSS properties in your specific style):

Code:

<table cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0"><tr><td><fieldset class="bbfieldset"><legend class="bblegend">{option}</legend><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="3" border="0"><tr><td>{param}</td></tr></table></fieldset></td></tr></table>
The [FIELDSET] BB Code can still be centered by using the [CENTER] BB Code, so there was no need for me to keep align="center". I removed the width="90%" from the code as well because with my version, it will just have the spacing outside of what the {param} is. IMO, this is a better code as it retains much of the vB code for a fieldset. Enjoy! :)

Installed, Thanks :)

Works perfect. Thanks!

Nice bb code mod Floris! I a question, is possible to have a the editor pre-populate with specific bb codes when a user goes to make a new post?

I am creating a review site and I would like to encourage users to follow a set format similar to the fieldset.

Snake 08-30-2006 04:03 PM

Thanks for the hack! I'll install it right away... :)

E.Blackadder 09-02-2006 04:51 PM

this looks great...just one minor aesthetic point though..

in the [fieldset=hello]fieldset![/fieldset]....if you look at the finished article the border comes to within one space of the 'H' in hello, but at the end of 'hello' there is no space at the end of the 'o' how do I ballance the appearance of the border?

cheers folks.

y2krazy 09-05-2006 03:43 PM

Modifed to look just like the fieldsets on MEMBERINFO:

You have to manually add it to the editor template, I think.
