Music influence survey
Informal, not a poll...open for debate and discussion. Thats what this thread is intended to be. The question I ask is, "would you consider any music/artist/bands from the last 25 years to have had or may have the same lasting influence on society and new artists as the rock legends from the 60's". I don't know alot about the music from the last 10 years, but submit that bands like The Police, The Clash, The Ramones and perhaps even U2 have had similar influence as artists like The Beatles, Doors, Stones, The Grateful Dead, The Who, etc. Look forward to the responses ;)
|
Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Kiss - look at the metal/rock genre today and you'll hear snippets of all of them in there somewhere - be it music, dress or attitude!
|
I have to say that I can't see any bands from the last 25 years having the same kind of effect on music that groups like the Doors, Led Zepplin, The Beatles and others have had. Sure, the Clash, U2 and a few others have made an impact, but not even close to the impact that the aforementioned bands made on music in their time.
|
Marilyn Manson is probably one of the few who has had a big influence in recent years - his concept changes with every album he releases.

LOL Alice and Ozzy are wonderful, I adore them both. Marilyn Manson is misunderstood by many though - he's not quite the copycat people assume him to be.
|
Is this limited to rock or any music genre? I ask because unlike the 60's and 70's when rock dominated, at least for the past 15 years, rap is the most influential music of today.
|
RAP is not considered music in my book, it would be considered talking or shouting ignorant crap to me. ;)
|
i like big butts and i cannot lie...all these other brothers cant deny...lol. hmm....not really into rock bands or whatnot....but, raps gonna be around for alllllllllong time.
and in response to boofo^^. lol, why u think that? its actually a form of poetry...these guys u hear on the tv and radio are garbage, i mean some song are good, most are bad...but if you listened to underground hiphop, id think you'd be impressed. |
Rap is influenced from the days of the funk to the blues and even centuries before that. It was the first form of vocal music (for any history buffs). It is based on poetry as Scrolls mentioned. However, the same with any other genre of music, there is good and bad rap.
Most of what people hear is from the mainstream. I also think that most rap of today is quite pathetic and gives the legimate rappers and DJ's a bad name. Yet to say that all rap is "crap" is erroneous and often comes from a limited understanding, appreciation and exposure to what it's all about. Back in the day rap was about having fun. It was feel good music. Any talk of battles/beefs remained on the stage between vocalists known as MC's. The DJ's were the conductors of the show which is often lost with today's rap. "Booty dancing", while I like Miami Bass and southern party rap (e.g., Atlanta), the girls were never a part of the Hip-Hop culture, which rap is a part of. It was about the B-Boys/Girls, Grafitti, DJ's and MC's. Yet, because most people listen to mainstream, they wouldn't know some of these facts. View rap like any other genre of music. Most singers can't sing and yet they are showcased in the pop-culture. Same with rap, many can't do it but they get the exposure nevertheless. Whether it's agreed or disagreed, there is no debating, as rap will be forever stamped in music history. |
I disagree with allot of what you said, sorry. Maybe not the so-called history of it as I have never cared enough at it to research it. But , answer me this, if you will, sir...why do you think the word RAP rhymes with crap? Coincidence? I think not. ;)

Music debates get old.. fast.
Too many opinionated people thinking they're right and the world is wrong. Personally, I used to like nothing but br0000tal metal. Pretty much since childhood. Recently though, I've opened my mind a lot more. I can probably name an artist from every genre out there (that I know of) that I like. Being more open minded with music has helped me out a lot with the band I'm in. But whatever.. as to the original question: I talk about this quite often. I kind of argue the fact that music that is considered "classic rock" now will be the same bands and music forever. Bands that have happened between all the legendary groups/artists are no where to be heard of right now.. Take a look at things, you know? Pop has died out. Nu-metal has died out. The new "hip" screamo/emo/hardcore/metalcore/whatever genre will be dead soon too. And I can assure myself that none of todays bands will be played on "classic rock" stations when I get older. Um, does that make sense to anyone? I don't know.. I just got done playing a show, it's really late, so I'm kind of.. out of it a bit? |

Now considering that rock came from the blues too, it can be reasonably inferred that rock and rap derived from the same musical origin. Both forms of music are rebellious and targets the youth. Is this a coincidence? Factually, no. While I listen to a lot of jazz, vocal and classical music I grew up heavily influenced in the Hip-Hop culture. I got my exposure when I was in the second grade and it stayed with me throughout the years. Rap was naturally a part of it and it's in my blood. :) |

Exactly! And how many RAP videos do you see Rappers smiling in and looking like they are having fun filming the video. Too much hate and anger in it for me.
|
rap is brilliant. ;). but, i also hear you older people (lol) with the classic rock blaring and its like nails on the chalkboard. but, doesnt bother me. cause i do the same thing, but with rap. and as freestyles said, i grew up around rap and its in my blood. so hopefully, it will never die....

It's ok to dislike something but if you do then do so for the correct reasons. "Gangsta Rap" is not the basis of rap. Let me reiterate, the original rap style was about having fun. It was "feel good" music. It wasn't about flashing gang signs and being hard. The lyrics had a positive message unlike what you mostly hear today.
The mainstream is flooded with so called "gangsta" rap, made famous by Ice T. and N.W.A. While they had street credibility most of the gangsta rappers today are "studio gangstas". They have to look the part to be believable. It's a shame that rap is synonymous with "gangsta rap" but if that's what the radio plays, that's what people believe. "Gangsta rap" is only one style of many. It is not and was never the basis of rap. |
Unfortunately (for Rap), that all I hear everywhere I go. Lyrics that glorify drugs and crime, degredation of women and so on...all played at decibles far beyond neccessary...when a car can be 100 yards away from my house and my windows shake, it just adds to my disgust and contempt for the music and those that listen to it.
|
That's understandable. Speaking specifically, it doesn't seem like your disgust is with (the basis of) rap but more so with the individuals who promote rap in a negative, degrading way. It's because that's what you hear and see, you've been conditioned to the point where it became a general rule.
|
^im actually one of the people that will turn my system down when i get near a neighborhood...ESPECIALLY after 9 or so at night...i think its disrespectful not to do so.
but as freestylez said.....gangsta rap even to me isnt rap, ive been writing rap and rapping myself for seven years....and would never degrade women or talk about drugs in my rhymes. like for instance, freestylez, u ever heard of canibus? hes an underground rapper that talks about scientific meanings and history type stuff. its just amazing how smart he is...never mentioning drugs or women. his name is a word for a drug, lol...but he rarely uses it. but thats an example...also 2pac. he was the poetry rapper....the best of the best...yea he was gangsta, but he rapped about the truth...everything that he has been threw. which is what i do...i mean i lived a troubled life...so, it helps me feel better, as it did him...so i can relate, which is why i love rap so much....i swear, i think when i was born...they cut a mic cord stead of a umbilical cord..lol. but....all rap isnt bad. |
Yup, I know Canibus. :)
I come from the generation of the "Old School" (70's to mid 80's) so much of my appreciation of rap, let along Hip-Hop, comes from the pioneers of the time. My exposure expanded to B-Boying (although limited), popping/boogaloo and DJing. I literally own thousands of records since I used to buy at least two copies of each record. Every now and then I get back on the wheels of steel (Technics MKS 1200's) for the pure enjoyment. :) I've been recently listening to Blackalicious "Make You Feel That Way". While there are tons of songs "Can You Hear It?" by Key Kool & DJ Rhettmatic (rare find) comes to mind. |
haha, yea i feel you on that stuff. u ever do any yourself? or try to?
|
I DJed on the local level. I've been associated with the Rock Steady Crew's Hawaii chapter (and other various crews). As for rocking the mic, nah. I leave it to the people who can throw down and not front, which I would be doing if I tried. :D

A rap/hip-hop "song" even if it has good lyrics (which I highly doubt) it has terrible "music". Rock has both great lyrics AND music. ;) |
Finally! The girl of my dreams. ;)

Apparently you didn't read my post in which I (factually) stated that rock and rap come from the same musical origin (the Blues). Secondly, a lot of rock musicians collaborate with rap musicians. I guess then musicians such as David Bowie, Sting, Aerosmith, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Queen and Prince, just to name a few (I might add), have terrible music. Third, many of today's rock songs sample riffs and beats derived from rap music (a two-way street). Fourth, "Hip-Hop" is a culture and not a style of song genre. On a separate note: So much for a great debate. I guess people of "rock" are not so hard after all (how's the generalization for ya). ;) It's ok to bait someone into a discussion but make sure that next time you bring the hook, line and sinker. :knockedout: |

I don't turn my down unless I pull in some ones drive way or it's after 10pm. Mine is not that loud, and my car is sealed up real good. Even wide open you can't hear it outside of the car unless you are standing right next to it unless a door or window is open. I know the type you speak of though, and agree on all points. My buddy has a stereo that sounds like crap but it's loud, he has been known to pull in to parking lots with it wide open and leave it on while he's in the store. I don't see the point in this, imho the less people that know about it, the less people out there looking to steal it. People like this give people like me a bad name, there are plenty of guys out there will loud systems and you'll never know about them. The reason is they only turn it up at comp and in areas where it won't bother anyone. My buddy is like this, and he's always needing to test something new. He lives with 7 houses right next door so I let him come up here to the farm and test in the middle of one of our fields. :) |
@ Freesteyelz -You are so misguided, my friend. ;)
|
OI... I'm a rock music fan - love all those ones you've listed (except Prince - not my cup of tea at all lol) but I also listen to other things. While rock music is my music of choice, I've been known to play all sorts of other things - including the odd bit of rap which, although not a favourite of mine I do find some of the lyrics clever and one of the boys listens to it a lot.
Personally even though there are some genres of music which I really dislike and personally think is "crap" or whatever, I also believe that we need all these different genres just to keep music moving forward and without all the various types of artists - be they sex gods like Aerosmith and the Chillis - or gangsta rappers (none of whom I can name LOL - in fact the only rap artist that I can currently think of is Eminem - whose lyrics crack me up at times) we would be in a dire place indeed where music is concerned. (the only people that should be shot are the manufactured pop bands :p ) |

I'll take this one, smacklan. ;)
I think he is referring to throughout the thread. And if you are listening to the cRAP, then you and I need to talk. ;) |

@Boofo - a quote from our generation..."what a drag it is getting old" lol ;) @Brad - I appreciate your remarks and I know there are many like you. I was the same way when I was younger and listened to my music loud in my car, although stereo's weren't quite as powerful back then as they are now. I just wish that more showed the same level as respect to others as you. |
RAP Music ?
Best laugh today - Rap is talking, not music. Rappers - I'd be happy if they all shot each other (which apparently, is not far from reality ....). |
I'm starting to like you better and better all the time. ;)
