Post from a long time VB user and .org member.

I've been away for a while and just started reading about all of the drama. For the record I have both paid hacks and free hacks on all of my forums. To those that have chosen to leave you will be missed.

Logikos 05-19-2006 11:24 AM

Hey, welcome back! :)

Boofo 05-19-2006 11:25 AM

And those of us who stay? Can we be missed, too? It's only fair. :cross-eyed:

Welcome back, my friend. ;)

Robert Basil 05-19-2006 11:31 AM

Sorry guys, no ill thought towards those staying. I missed everyone during my absence. Well, everyone except that Wayne guy....

Marco van Herwaarden 05-19-2006 11:36 AM

Yes Bob, you can be missed also, wouldn't be fair otherwise. :D

Boofo 05-19-2006 11:46 AM

You are just too good to me Marco! ;)

Just thinking about all types of forum software and how far it has progressed. Damn I feel old, I remember running forums back when you could email Ted (Old timers will know which Ted I am talking about) and get a response in a few hours when his software was shareware. ;)

I even remember what a pain in the ass it was to moderate the motorcycle area on the Well. :surprised:

Boofo 05-19-2006 12:14 PM

Old timer? I've got socks older than you. :cross-eyed:

But I do rember the BBS days (in the beginning even). ;)

Yes, and you still wear them everyday. :(

PS If people ever wonder why things go slow here at vb.org, they should try to work in our Mod. forum with the smell of those socks for some time.

Boofo 05-19-2006 12:23 PM

Why do you think I avoid that forum? ;)

Funny you should mention BBS's. My Uncle is Ward Christensen (The author of the XMODEM protocol and the very first BBS software "CBBS" back in 1978)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ward_Christensen

I was also the FAQ author for the Renegade BBS software in the early 90's.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renegade_%28BBS%29

Now I'm a professional webmaster and DBA for www.godaddy.com

We are really showing our age!

Boofo 05-19-2006 12:36 PM

I ran Spitfire BBS back in the days. The author of it lives about 10 miles from me so I was in on all the updates and beta testing up front. That's when a 10 MHZ AST (what I had) would kick a 12 MHZ Compaq (what the Spitfire author had) to dust. We thought we were the Kings of the hill back then. ;)

Holy ****, 10 MHz? I think my 3.20 GHz P4 is slow ffs :p

Boofo 05-19-2006 02:33 PM

I was the bad boy on my block back then with the fastest BBS in town if not the state. I guess you could consider me the PC-Rebel of the Golden Age. ;)

[high]* Boofo has given everyone enough ammunition now for the age jokes. He hopes they are happy[/high]

hehe...TV's used to be black and white and had no remotes once upon a time too :p ( I still kick myself when I think about the $2300 I dropped for a P75 with 8mgb of RAM once upon a time :()

hey, there's a lot to be said for a 10MHz machine with a 300bps modem
I could read a 1000-new-message board faster then, than I can now!

But you have to realize, Revan, back then we didn't use all the graphics and "pretty" stuff they use now. We used straight color coded files with nothing but text. Boards were slow, yes, but not as slow as you would think for the technology available then. Since there were no higher speeds to compare to, (until the blazing 2400 Baud modem showed up) we felt like were zooming at the time. ;)
