Google FREE (Non Adsense) Search in Search Drop Down

Add Google Search to 'Search' Drop Down Menu

Unlike other Google Search codes that have been submitted here under 3.5, this one uses the free 'Google on your site' search, so everyone can use it easily. The code has also been modified a bit so it integrates fully with the design your forum, and results will open in a new window so users don't inconvieniently have to leave your site to view results. :up:

Template Mods: 1
Install Time: Just a minute or two

------------------------------
Installation

You can download a copy of these instructions. See the attached txt file.

1) Open 'navbar' template.

2) FIND:-
Code:

$vbphrase[advanced_search]</a></td>
                </tr>

3) UNDERNEATH, ADD:-
Code:

<tr>
                        <td class="thead">Google Search</td>
                </tr>
<!-- Search Google -->
<tr><td class="vbmenu_option" title="nohilite">
<FORM method=GET action="http://www.google.com/search" TARGET=_blank>
<input type=hidden name=ie value=ISO-8859-1>
<input type=hidden name=oe value=ISO-8859-1>
<A HREF="http://www.google.com/" target="_blank">
<IMG SRC="http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/9867/googlesearch2yn.gif""
border="0" ALT="Google" align="absmiddle"></A>
<INPUT TYPE=text name=q class=bginput size=10 maxlength=255 value="">
<INPUT type=submit class="button" name=btnG VALUE="Search">
</FORM></td></tr>
<!-- Search Google -->

4) Enjoy.

-----------------------------------

For the Google Icon (which must be included, Google will be grumpy if it isn't) I have hosted it on Imageshack for this mod. If you wish to host it yourself, just download the attached image, upload it to your server and edit the URL in the code accordingly. I had to change the image because the original is rather too large.

You may also want to change the size of the input box for forum search from '20' to '25' so it is the width of the menu once the Google Search is included.

Snake 05-19-2006 06:41 PM

I had a look before submitting and found that the others involved adsense search and there was talk about customer numbers etc.

is it possible to make this work by using actual websites search function? for example a dictionary website that offers searches for words. if given permission from another website could i have the same functionality as this google search function? i direct search link to thier content?

patrickstar 06-04-2006 09:28 PM

does yahoo offer a 'yahoo on your site' search?

patrickstar 06-19-2006 09:27 PM

ive added this to my search module for vbadvance portal.

it shows up fine but when you enter text into the text box and click search, it takes you to the vB page saying no words match your search. the google function is not actually working.

is there a way to make it work?

thanks

Can anyone tell me how to do this?

Also, is there any way to change the color of the google search box to make it a different color than the forum search? I know there is, I just need to know how. A site I go to (www.sotsyndicate.com) has it that way.

Bueller?

Marvin Hlavac 02-27-2009 10:21 AM

I just installed this. Thanks.

For me to continue using this mod, I will have to find a way to modify it further so the search engine searches only my site, not the whole web. Anyone knows how to do that?

Also, instead of opening a google.com web page, is it possible to integrate the search results into my forum page?

Thanks very much in advance!
