Extra Meta Tags

Extra Meta Tags

UPDATED TO 1.0.3

Hi all :) Well, I'm both new to vB and vB hacks, this is my first one, hope you like it :)

What is Extra Meta Tags?

Extra Meta Tags is a modification that adds additional Meta Tags to your forum, aside from the standard description and keywords tags already included by vBulletin.

What tags does it add?

It adds the following tags:
Abstract
Robots
Revisit-After
Rating
Distribution
MSSmartTagsPreventParsing
If you want a certain tag added, feel free to ask.

INSTALLATION
- Import the product 'extra_meta_tags.xml'
- Do below template edit.

Open the 'headerinclude' template.

FIND:
------
Code:

<!-- CSS Stylesheet -->
ABOVE, ADD:
-------------
Code:

<!-- Extra Meta Tags by SecondV -->
<meta name="abstract" content="$vboptions[exmeta_abstract]" />
<meta name="robots" content="$vboptions[exmeta_robots]" />
<meta name="revisit-after" content="$vboptions[exmeta_visit_after]" />
<meta name="rating" content="$vboptions[exmeta_rating]" />
<meta name="distribution" content="$vboptions[exmeta_dist]" />
<if condition="$vboptions[exmeta_mssmarttags] == 'yes'"><meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="true" /></if>
<!-- / Extra Meta Tags by SecondV -->

Save.

UPGRADING
- Re-import the product 'extra_meta_tags.xml' - with "Allow overwrite" set to yes.
- Do below template edit.

Open the 'headerinclude' template.

------
Code:

<!-- Extra Meta Tags by SecondV -->
<meta name="abstract" content="$vboptions[exmeta_abstract]" />
<meta name="robots" content="$vboptions[exmeta_robots]" />
<meta name="revisit-after" content="$vboptions[exmeta_visit_after]" />
<meta name="rating" content="$vboptions[exmeta_rating]" />
<meta name="distribution" content="$vboptions[exmeta_dist]" />
<!-- / Extra Meta Tags by SecondV -->

REPLACE WITH:
----------------
Code:

<!-- Extra Meta Tags by SecondV -->
<meta name="abstract" content="$vboptions[exmeta_abstract]" />
<meta name="robots" content="$vboptions[exmeta_robots]" />
<meta name="revisit-after" content="$vboptions[exmeta_visit_after]" />
<meta name="rating" content="$vboptions[exmeta_rating]" />
<meta name="distribution" content="$vboptions[exmeta_dist]" />
<if condition="$vboptions[exmeta_mssmarttags] == 'yes'"><meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="true" /></if>
<!-- / Extra Meta Tags by SecondV -->

Please have a look at my sigz. ;)

RemiAlone 05-18-2006 02:59 PM

The last line has to be:

<!-- / Extra Meta Tags by SecondV -->

not:

<-- / Extra Meta Tags by SecondV -->

Eric 05-18-2006 03:04 PM

Ah, well, interesting. I tried searching but didn't pull anything up. Thanks for pointing it out, though :) Suppose I'll just fix what RemiAlone pointed out and leave the hack at that.

Sorry folks.

And now looking at the bottom of this thread "Similar threads":

Not sure if the author tag is one that should be used as forums are made by many authors.

Hmm, true. I was thinking about removing the author tag, and adding a few others. But, seeing as this type of hack has been done twice.. I really don't see the need.

However, if I get some free time, I may update it.

Zachery 05-19-2006 11:40 PM

Don't stop your work just beceomse someone else might have done it.

Just make it an option, but still have it available. ;)

Eric 08-04-2006 10:42 AM

Updated to 1.0.3 :)

RichieBoy67 10-12-2007 12:02 AM

Thanks for your work, I have installed 3 of your mods tonight on my site and a couple clients sites as well. Nice work..

Great for seo...

Dave Hawley 10-12-2007 08:01 AM

You do all know that SE's don't bother with these and stopped about 7 Years ago?

Umm.. No they have not. Maybe a few of the major ones; but there are engines that still rely on these tags. ;)

Dave Hawley 10-13-2007 01:29 AM

Ok, let me rephrase that. The SE's that bring 95% of Web traffic to sites do not use them. There are likely hundreds, maybe thousands that do read them (not use), but they are still superfluous and VERY few people in comparison in turn use these 'other' SEs.

I highly doubt any SE, that people use, "rely" on them.

RichieBoy67 10-14-2007 12:44 AM

I beieve most se se meta tags for thier Listing informaton bUt not for ratings. With that said meta tags stiLL are an important aspect of seo....

anyways, why post to bash? dont instaLL it if YoU dont think it does anything...

Dave Hawley 10-14-2007 01:21 AM

Sorry, didn't mean it to sound like a "bash". It's just that there is so much bad & misinformation out there in regards to SEO.

Seriously, the only Meta tags that matter are;

Meta Description
Meta Keywords <many say these are totally ignored>
Meta Robot. E.g <Meta Name="Robots" Content="NoIndex">
