I uninstall this mod

No I didn't. I uninstalled this mod. Sorry guys, but the grammar around here isn't the best! o.t isn't a known abbreviation either.

Marco van Herwaarden 05-18-2006 09:29 AM

Maybe the user is still in the progress of uninstalling when he clicks it ;)

Just kidding, we will set our master of grammar Brad on it.

Jasmin 05-18-2006 09:39 AM

o.t. = off topic, doesn't it?

FleaBag 05-18-2006 09:40 AM

Marco: Cool! I wasn't being a bugger, it's just English is my speciality hehe.

Jasmin: I know that, but how many people do? If you'd never heard of a hack of the month, I seriously doubt you'd realise what o.t. means. Hack oranges tomatoes month.

Marco van Herwaarden 05-18-2006 09:51 AM

Hehe, you can't say that it is my speciality :)

FleaBag 05-18-2006 09:53 AM

But I can understand that! I don't speak a word of Dutch. Grammar in posts doesn't really matter in my opinion, it's just the phrases. :D

Grammatically I think both phrases are acceptable.

As it currently is, I believe the phrase conveys "I am uninstalling this mod"

As you worded it "I have uninstalled this mod".

Either are acceptable.

FleaBag 05-18-2006 10:13 AM

I agree, that is what it conveys, but not what it says. "I uninstall this mod" is not a valid phrase.

Zachery 05-18-2006 10:17 AM

Can you diagram the sentance for me and show me why?

Chris M 05-18-2006 10:18 AM

If you remove the "I" it makes sense...

Chris

ericgtr 05-18-2006 02:20 PM

How about preceding it with something, for example "If 'I uninstall this mod' will it fix my board?" Maybe not the best example within the context of this post but it works. ;)

Chris M 05-18-2006 02:24 PM

Yes that could work - "If I uninstall this mod I vote for Chris M to become World President" :D

If I was in charge of that, you'd all have to re-learn english. The entire forum would sound like a bunch of rednecks at a Fish Fry in the Virgina Hills.

[high]* Brad is allowed to say the above because he is a redneck and loves to go to fish fries in the Virgina Hills. :)[/high]

I'll see what I can do though. :)

Chris M 05-18-2006 02:42 PM

If I knew what a "fish fry" was..... :p

But is it correct to switch between tenses?

No, I agree with you there that it would be best to keep the same style of phrase.

Considering language, primarily english, evolves every half-decade so there's a good chance we'll have to if your changes have a substantial following. :D

MThornback 05-19-2006 03:04 AM

Normally I don't nitpick :p but I spotted this:

"I uninstall this mod"

shouldn't this be:

"I uninstalled this mod"

Damn! I thought I spotted it first...i've been merged :P

davidw 05-19-2006 08:51 AM

If everyone is going to have a cow about it, it should be

I [have] uninstalled this mod
or
I['ve] uninstalled this mod

sheesh

O.T. [a.k.a. OT] = semi official abbreviation :p

You only get some chaos if a whole board has "OT" as it's topic :D
