Point User To Searchfunction

Ever been tired of pointing the user to the searchfunction? The same question has been asked multiple times? With this Hack you can point the user to the searchfunction.

What does this hack do?
Point To Search 1.0 adds a link to the Thread/Admin Tools, where a Mod can create a default post that contains a predefined text, like:

------------------------------------------------------------
Hello DummyUser,

the question you are asking has been already answered in another thread.
Please use the (link to searchfunction) Searchfunction to get your answer faster.

best wishes,
Admin
------------------------------------------------------------

As an option, you can decide to close the thread after that reply or leave it open. Additionally, you can choose if the Hack should use the current user as the poster or use a specific account.

Contains: 2 AdminCP settings, 6 phrases, 1 additional template
Installtime: <1 minutes
Difficulty: easy (1 product)

Demo is not available due to missing permission on my board ;)

Don't forget to click INSTALL!.

How to Install?
- Simply import the product, no changes to templates or files needed

Can you make it so that there is 2 options:

1) Point user to search

This leaves the post open for further discussion.

And

2) Point user to search and close thread.

As it says "thread closed".

Nathan2006 03-28-2006 05:34 PM

me again ;)

Is there anyway to have custom messages?

I have seen them on other VB boards but cannot fin anything :(

Thanks again for this great hack :D

RsX 03-28-2006 09:33 PM

It would be great if it could also close the thread in the process :)

MentaL 03-28-2006 09:34 PM

Found bug.

When a post has been made and a person replies, if i use the auto search feature, the name its mensioned for to search is the last poster not the thread starter ;)

That can be configured in the AdminCP.

You can change the original phrases in the AdminCP (Styles and Phrases, Phrase "pointtosearch_text")

Thanks for your reply:)

How would I be able to create 2 separate messages using the same plug-in?

So I could add another text line on the thread tools?

Phalynx 03-29-2006 05:08 AM

I'm currently working on a Hack that allows you to choose from different messages for different situation, e.g. to warn that topic has gone to OT and will be closed.

BTW, if you don't want that the last poster is beeing mentioned, remove the {1} (replaced by name of last poster) from the phrase "pointtosearch_text".

MentaL 03-29-2006 08:44 AM

wouldnt it be easyer to make it all optional in the admin panel rather than run 50 miles?

Rukbat 03-29-2006 10:55 PM

Or even one that points them to the FAQ or maybe a website?

Burley 03-30-2006 09:24 AM

great hack, waiting for the update :)

This can be realised through changing the original phrase. Otherwise you have to wait until my new hack with pre-defined phrases is ready.

NemoTech 04-01-2006 09:02 AM

Wow this is cool.

Ntfu2 05-22-2006 06:42 AM

Cool hack, waiting for the feature to be able to setup multiple auto replies

So I have your permission to modify the xml file to suite my needs of changing it from pointing to search function to the faq or my website? or even both?

Phalynx 05-24-2006 07:04 AM

As long as you don't release the modified XML you can change it, sure. This can be easier changed if you import the XML and change the phrases...

Boofo 05-24-2006 07:16 AM

Would you please add the instructions from the first post in a text file and zip it up with the xml file for download, sir? That makes it easier for re-installs if the member ever needs to do that. ;)

blogtorank 05-25-2006 05:13 PM

Great add :), installed!!! Very well done!

lasto 09-06-2006 02:18 PM

Phalynx 09-06-2006 02:36 PM

Is not ready, yet :)

lasto 09-06-2006 05:07 PM

Eq4bits 10-09-2006 06:57 PM
