How much do you earn on your big board?

Hey guys!
Just out of curiosity i was wondering how mutch you make on your big boards?

Type in forumname, rank on Big-Boards and how mutch you make.

No need to say how you make it.

I would be surprised if anyone shares what they make. I share some things on my blog, but I am not ever sharing exact specifics about which of my forums earn $X.

2200 uniques a day? Is that on the site in your signature?

I especially liked the "**GUEST ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SEE ANY THREAD TILL THEY ARE NOT A REGISTERED USER**"

Erwin 04-26-2006 07:52 AM

2200 uniques a day will mean you should be making a fortune. :)

white_2kgt 04-28-2006 01:26 PM

$0, have a few sponsors that pay the bills but not all of them, im in the hole a few $ every month.

creedmaniac 04-28-2006 01:49 PM

I don't own a big-board, but am a co-admin on a semi-big board i think, it has 25,000 members (just pruned) and about 130-180 posts a day. We make our money purely by subscription to our 'members section'

amount edited...asked by owner

Erwin 04-30-2006 01:12 AM

$20k a month is a great effort. :)

Define Fortune. ;p

While I see some profits now days, I think my happiest moment was finally breaking even! :) I won't even go into the debt I reached prior to that point.

Brandon Sheley 05-01-2006 05:36 AM

5wayshosting 05-08-2006 03:57 AM

I earn about -$30 each month for hosting payments. Anyone double that?

fcreature 05-10-2006 06:08 AM

I'll just saw I make $xx from some of my forums.

Mr Chad 05-11-2006 11:15 PM

I dont even have a big-board, but on my other site BeastToast.com I make very little $260 mo/ just from one affiliate ad image. (aftet hosting its around $240)

Bhuwan 05-12-2006 01:18 PM

losing lots of $$$$

The Wedge 05-12-2006 05:07 PM

losing

Xorlev 05-12-2006 05:38 PM

If you enjoy running it, then does it matter? Consider it an investment into your entertainment.

Paul M 05-12-2006 05:41 PM

Surely no one running a 'Big Board' should be losing money. Ours not the biggest by a long way, but adsense more than covers the cost of actually running it.

99SIVTEC 05-12-2006 05:52 PM

I pay about 300 a month for my dedicated server, and I make about 300-400 a month off ads and subscriptions. Definitely not the business to be in if you want to get rich

almukmin 05-12-2006 06:06 PM

I just started as well, I made 2k+ in my second month, and hopefully will start making 10k+ next month.

Jay... 05-12-2006 06:37 PM

I earn nothing at the moment, however if i get another 800 members i will be earning at least 1500 GBP for sending out a promotional e-mail, averaging about 7 members a day at the mo, shouldnt be too long before im coining it in!

Ranma2k 05-12-2006 11:02 PM

I'm not earning I'm losing $500 a month
and i have 2500 unique visits a day

never thought about adding ads to the site since members doesn't like it

Darmak 05-14-2006 01:47 AM

I earn about 800 dlls / Month whit average of 12000 uniques per day

reebosak 05-14-2006 04:49 AM

I am currently losing money too. I've spend a couple thousand dollars easily over the past 3 years or so of my forums, only recently have i actually started to try and earn some of that back in ads and donations.

after YPN money and donations are figured in, i'm still probably losing around $140 a month on average for this year. hopefully that will change soon

Ahsin1 05-14-2006 02:30 PM

i earn like 2xxx$

Lazorfist 05-14-2006 10:15 PM

Make no $. T__T

A large number of the members on my board lurked for a while first, so I bet that probably isn't good for activity in the long run.

FlyBoy73 05-15-2006 12:25 AM

Very rarely will any forum owner not go into the hole (some times very deep) while starting their forum. I got into around $8k in debt (hosting) before my main forum finally started covering the hosting costs.

Rare is the situation where you do this as a living or even profit from the git-go. I've said this before, but you gotta love it.. Most of the people with Big-Boards today did not start out with money in mind and they busted their asses to build the community. That was early in the forum "game" and now I would image it would be even harder since most topics are covered and the leaders have emerged in each niche for the most part.

Wifey 05-15-2006 02:55 AM

Losing!

I don't run ads on my site though. I qualify, but I can't bring myself to put them on my site. It would be nice though. I have over 12,000 members but not that many are active, LOL. I prune sporadically though, so it's all good :)

I'd like to just break even a month. My hosting is great -- I host most images on fotki as well so that helps with bandwidth, but it's still around $50 a month. I'm praying I don't have to go over that because then I'll consider closing it. It's not as "grand" as most of the other big boards on here!

Scrolls 05-16-2006 01:40 PM

I am co-owner of a new board that we just created a few months ago (right now, we are in the hole around $1000, but this is our first VB, and I think we are working backwards lol) We started the site before adding all the content that we really needed I.E. The personalized skin/theme, organizing each forum, etc. so now we are working on the site as 50+ members navigate it and post lmao (but at least its only 50 for now)

FlyBoy-You say leaders of each topic niche is pretty much covered, and this is very true, ALTHOUGH, competition can be swift in the coming. Think search engines ;) who was number one before Google seemingly came out of nowhere? Everyone has a chance to become the number one of thier chosen topic, it just takes alot of time, effort, luck, and a damned good marketing ploy! lol

The Chief 05-16-2006 02:19 PM

I can say I am making more then what I am losing, mostly because of my other sites, but I am not even offering subscriptions yet :)

Oh, you are right about the "competition" or new arrivals in the same niche, but to overcome an established community that has a lot of momentum already built up is a very hard thing to do even if the new forum actually does things better.

A few years back I started up a community covering jetski racing since I was pretty heavily involved in that. My graphics / skins were tops.. I had the best software (vBulletin) with lots of features, galleries and much more, whereas the community that had been around for about a year and a half longer when I started was running a basic phpbb and had no graphics and very few features. As hard as I worked it was a huge uphill battle to get people to do more than register and check it out. We had a number of solid members but most just were not going to move. To be honest though, it was not my primary community and after about a year I got disillusioned with it. If I had kept up 110% it very well could be the premier community now since the guy I was competing against pretty much let it go. I could have also thrown more money at it, etc... etc.. So, yes, it can be done, but it is hard as heck. ;)

With regards to search engines, they constantly flux, but the community with the most threads/posts usually have the most links/references in all the major search engines. My Big Board's links pretty much come up near the top for any thing you can think of in my niche. The only way for that to happen is to have a ton of unique content and time. If there was a new forum on the block it would cost them a fortune in adwords (etc) to get noticed. That, fortunately, is not going to happen in my niche since it isn't a big money market.

Again, it all comes down to lots of hard work. Nothing is impossible. ;)

Cky47 05-21-2006 05:05 PM

I have 3,000+ uniquesa day, but I am usually luck to make more than $40 a month. My site is still only 3 months old though.

Wordplay 05-24-2006 08:34 AM

the website i mentioned in my first post...has 0 sponsors/ads/affiliates...revenue is pure subscription

lafsunlmtd 05-25-2006 04:53 PM

on www.abadss.com we make about 30 or so per day off of adsense. and we make anouther 50 per day off of subscriptions. we have a dedicated server that hosts it and other sites we have. we have about 17000 members and about 40-50 on at any given time. we get about 1200 or so uniques per day

Markro 05-26-2006 03:03 AM

My community is 8,000 + members strong and I only make ~250 USD monthly (costs already deducted).

Erwin 05-26-2006 03:54 AM

It's not the number of members, it's the number of active users, traffic and demographics.

phkk 05-26-2006 06:11 AM

MY site NOW ( 3 months from now ) have 12000 visit per day and I make $200 ++ buck from google. They pay me like 0.03 cents per click. wtf. I am normaly got 0.21 per click . . I have to pay for the server $350. So I made negative -$100 ++++. I am Still have not get money from google yet. crap. also I ran the site free for like 3 years . ( each month in past I got $50, Hosting -$250 ) You get the answer how much I lost . Crap

davidw 05-26-2006 11:07 AM

I have to hand it to Erwin - he does an outstanding job on his site. I run a similar type of website that handles maybe 1/1000th as much as him. Great job, Erwin! Currently, I am at 1% big board status :(, but I'm also fairly new - less than 2 years young.

Lqd 05-26-2006 09:42 PM

I have a radio station with an average of 300 listeners @ 96kbps, it's up and running for 2 months now, got 1200 members on a new domain so far, 20+ new members a day... no need to tell you how NOT rich I am... :(

Care to look? http://hard.fm (Dance music - Dutch style - Hardstyle)

ps. don't tune in.. ;)
