Please Install PM Preview 3.5!
Please Install PM Preview 3.5!
It will help managing private messages A LOT! Thank you! |
What is it ?
( Searching for it proved useless as preview is the only searchable word  ) |
This thread seems kinda weird to me
|
|
If you search only in the titles of threads, you can find it :)
It's located here. Personally I don't like it :ermm: Edit: Psionic Vision was too fast for me. |
Well, members on my boards like it.
And it saves a lot of time if you have a lot of pms. |
Hmm, actually i think i don't like it as well, from what it looks like...
|
The advantages of that hack are that you can see the content of your messages without actually opening them. It also cuts out quotations so you only see the body of the message.
Because the installation and deinstallation takes only a minute, I believe it's worth a try. |
The README for the hack include an alternate method, which is that PM previous pop up as a tool-tip (when you hover over the PM title.) This is a happy compromise and my users LOVE it. Very clean, very nice. Makes it super easy to manage lots of PM's.
The hack's thread also includes a tip on how to make it user-optional: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost....1&postcount=30 |
I find the hack very useful on my own board, and I think it would work well here :)
Thanks, Mat |
Hmm, having now seen what it is, I think it would be very useful.
Most PM conversations I have with people all go back and forth between us with the same PM title - when people reply, they never change the title, even weeks later when replying on a totally unrelated matter - this makes it very hard to locate the one you're looking for when you go back to them. |
Also helps when pruning your PM mailbox.. no need to open up each one...

Exactly. |
I second this request.
I have everything from customers to users that need help PM me here, i would like to know what each PM is about ahead of time. |
Well --- I mean c'mon, a number of people have agreed with me on this, so pelase install it? There is no reason not to. k thx.
|
Looking at the Hack, it seems useless to me - as useless as thread previews.
I always read my PMs anyway, so I don't need a preview But that is just my personal opinion :) |

There is one major difference between thread previews and pm previews: pm previews are displayed without hovering the mouse over the title.
I always read my pms too, but as it was pointed out earlier, it is hard to find older pms with specific content, esspecially if there is a lot of pms with the same title. Therefore, this hack is very useful for the purpose of managing old correspondence. |
I did read. This was just to explain why I find it useless :)
@Psionic Vision A search function, that'd be indeed useful. |
There is no need for a search functions when this hack is installed - you can literally see what the message is about without opening it.
As Paul pointed out, your explanation is completely irrelevant to the nature of this hack... |
Yeah, PM Preview is not for reading or searching, it's for PM management. I'm not good about deleting or filing as messages come in. I let them pile up, and then when my mailbox is almost full, I start to prune and clean things up... filtering through to see what to delete and what to keep.
Now think about how that would work currently. Open window, delete (click checkbox, confirm,) open window, delete (click checkbox, confirm,) repeat ad nauseum. There's no "Next PM/Previous PM" so quickly browsing through contents is a pain. I often try to do this with tabs, opening 20 at a time, and then deleting the PM's I want to trash and just closing the window on ones I want to keep, but even that is a pain. With PM Preview, I can see a quick blurb of what the PM contains. And delete or keep accordingly. (IE: it's not about searching for any one particular PM, it's about getting a birds-eye glance of ALL of them.) I do PM Preview with the pop-up option, simply because to me it looks cleaner that way. Many, many users have expressed how helpful it has been for them. And many users here know what I'm talking about. For PM's, it just makes sense. In pop-up mode, it blends right in and is not intrusive in any way. It just works. Seriously; the built-in PM Management of vB is a nightmare, and this hack takes one step in the right direction of SOLVING the problem, in a clean and elegant manner. Why again would it NOT be installed? |
@Psionic Vision
Different people, different opinions :) A search function is needed - I don't want to click through several pages of PMs reading all previes just to find one PM. As for deleting PMs ... I just tick them for deletion from the list? Previous/Next might be useful (got it on my board), though I don't use it myself. |

Yup, I have to open up each one, individually to see their contents. Which is clunky user interface. PM Preview solves this UI conundrum in a clean and elegant way. |

Ideally PM Previews could be updated to make it a User-Selectable option in UserCP. That way, those that don't like it could just turn it off. Those that like it can leave it on. Everyone's happy.
|
Hmm, i'd prefer threadlike pms so a complete rewrite of the pm system, Andreas as you are at it, just do it :p
|
Complete Rewrite = takes time, while this is something already written. Just install it please.
|
I to would find this useful. Very helpful when I'm in a hurry.
And if you aren't going to install it at least give us a clear cut "No." |

In tool-tip mode (pop up) you hardly know it's there. Until you need it, and then you're very, very appreciative that it's there. |
hmm, if it's done like the thread previews, then why not :)
i'll get brad to it ;) |
Yay!!!

I agree.. if it helps the coders, do it.
|
I has already been installed for 3 days now. ;)

See, I told ya it just blends in. |
I only noticed it yesterday :)
|
Great suggestion and addition. Thanks for implementing it. :)
|
I don't see it. Do I need to turn it on or something?
EDIT: Ohh, I see it. However, what you did is very different from the actual hack. The actual hack lets you see everything instantly. What you did, not only does it require a mouse over, but the mouse over does not work in Opera, which is the browser I am using... :( So the way you did it is of no use to me :( Please make it display the contents as it is in original hack. |
This hack would benefit from an update that lets the user choose:
On/Off Visible Preview, or Preview via Popup Is the author (BluPhoenix) around? |
I don't see it to be honest. Am i missing something?
