A few small suggestions

Hiya,

I've been coming to .org for a couple of months now. As with most sites I find it's 95% great and 5% not-so-great, and I'm here to whine about the 5% :D (don't get me wrong, overall it's pretty good)

I have a few visual suggestions more than anything.
- Could there be an option to skip the portal. I've never been that keen on them and the fact I have to have two pageloads to get to the forums is annoying (I could use a bookmark but I often don't use the mouse and it's so much quicker to alt-d (addy bar) and type vbu for autocomplete)
- The edit profile fields.. 25 is the default width and it's tiny. 60 would be much nicer. Trivial perhaps but still something
- A lot of forums that should be set to "view from beginning" are set to one month. For example hack of the month. Another are the vb 3.0* hacks.. new peeps might not realise that there are actually a lot of useful hacks there that just haven't been replied to recently.
- Why are attachments for !guests only.. it's quite annoying because if I want to show my staff possible things we could add I have to save the picture then rehost it so they can view it. (This info might be out of date, apologies if it is)

Attachments are only viewable by licensed members (so this automatic also exclude guests).

bairy 03-08-2006 09:31 AM

Okay @ all that.

I mean the Additional info fields on profile.php?do=editprofile , version, fav hack, location etc.

Lea Verou 03-08-2006 11:10 AM

The images should be viewable to guests. I also hate to give my login when I want to show something I've made to a friend :/

Xenon 03-08-2006 11:47 AM

images might be visible to guest in the future, but the problem is that the current permission system doesn't differate if an attachment is an image or a file, that's vb's design and has nothing to do with vb.org in special

Lea Verou 03-08-2006 11:58 AM

You can always hack the system ;) :p
Hey, it's vbulletin.org! :D :p

Xenon 03-08-2006 12:01 PM

i know, but i didn't want to right now

with 3.5 and the plugin system we have the plan of doing so maybe, but not before :p

Lea Verou 03-08-2006 12:03 PM

Correct, I keep forgetting that we're still on 3.0.x :(

Now I understand why :)
I really hope that guests can view images at some point.

Oh there is another thing now I think of it.. Hack of the month. No one's replied to my suggestion about that.
Also because of the time it's been running there are two sets of various months, for example two May's.. could the titles be edited and the year appended and perhaps which vb version it was aimed at. It would make it a lot easier for new board owners (I just u/g to 3.5) to find the best of the best.

Xenon 03-08-2006 10:43 PM

the Hotm doesn't base on version even a vb2 hack can still win that contest (if anyone installs it ;))

Agree

I second the "skip the portal" option as well. Unless you guys start having articles and interviews and stuff (which would be awesomely great/greatly awesome), I don't really see a use for it other than to put emphasis on anouncement posts.

In fact, while we're at it... why not skip everything too? Just take users directly to the footer. :p

Xenon 03-09-2006 05:56 PM

hmm, that's a very good idea, would mean also not much work for us anymore ^^

who is chris c 03-09-2006 11:10 PM

i'd rather see everyone get forwarded to the credits.php

Princeton 03-09-2006 11:23 PM

I prefer having portal ... just not in it's current state.
Currently, there's really nothing there that is "important" which is why most people ignore it.

Xenon 03-09-2006 11:24 PM

hmm, you should know our to do list Joe ;)
