Hi..thanks for this
There is a slight problem, it does not work too clever with GARS
see here http://www.bashys-place.com/forums/s...ead.php?t=1932

Hello, great hack. thank you. I installed this one and works great but can we do it for this, the same thing for all posts, not only the "first post" of the threads??

Rickie3 02-25-2006 11:54 AM

installed thankyou, but only works on the first post, all other posts are still readable

Yeah that :) This will be great once it's working right!!!! Thanks for this

Gio~Logist 02-25-2006 03:33 PM

Yes i only made it like that for the first post, as i thought it would be a bit to much to have that message show on every post. What do you guys think of making it so that the first post has one message and then the second has a different one? This way you can customize it so that it's not to much and such.

I am not familiar with GARS and do not use it, therefore, i'd have to look into making it supported with GARS. If you'd like, feel free to PM me with admincp access to your site so i can take a look at the variables and such. The only way it won't work is if GARS uses something other than $post[message], which i don't see why it would.

bashy 02-25-2006 03:46 PM

Cheers m8...PM sent :)

o0Hubba0o 02-25-2006 03:55 PM

Possibly show only the first post?

Also is it possible add a way to make certain forums exempt from this? I have graphics tutorials that need to stay viewable to guests, but to limit the rest of the forums would be nice.

Gio~Logist 02-25-2006 04:00 PM

Newly added:
  • Apply hack for posts other than first
  • Different message for all other posts
  • Different character limit for posts other than first

Screenshots have been updated, zip has been updated.

definitely agree with this - just show the first post with the highlighted messsage - no others within each thread.

Otherwise the thread is littered with the limitation message.

Thanks this type of feature should be built-in by default.

The first version was set to only limit first post. And i said exactly what you said :p Read my post regarding that. The new version allows for both. However, i forgot to add a setting to turn one or the other off individually. That will be done now. Hold on tight, don't download the new zip just yet.

funkmeister 02-25-2006 04:06 PM

If I set the allowed number of characters in other posts to '0' - will it show just a normal posting but the content blanked out (in other words, just the posters profile info, location, post count etc. displayed)? So, everything looks just like a normal post, but no post content? That would be good enough for me :)

bashy 02-25-2006 04:07 PM

Hi m8

For all the rest of the posts in the thread, are they meant to be not showing any
of the text apart from the -- This message may have been cut off and the rest will only be shown to members. To become a member, click here --

If you set it to 0, it will just show the message you set in admincp i believe.

Have you ever seen this for 3.0.x? Was wondering if something similar exists.

Ok, so in that case, all that would show in posting #2 onwards, would be the second limitation message that I've defined - no actual post content with the exception of the limitation message?

Thanks for the updates.

If you set the number of characters for first post to "0", then it will only show message from admincp.

If you set the number of characters for other posts to "0", then it will only show message from admincp.

:p

Ok, thanks for the clarification ;)

How does it work when a post has attachments? The unregistered users are unable to download them, right? It's based off the permissions of that usergroup, right? They can see the thumbnails and/or links, but when clicked on, they get the regular vB 'permission denied' dialog box, right?

The attachments part is not touched by this hack, so it will still be just as it was before.

bashy 02-25-2006 06:12 PM

Cheers m8...this is working perfectly now even with GARS ;)
Thanks again...excellent hack m8, well done :)

Bellinis 02-25-2006 06:13 PM

Very nice hack!
But a good thing to keep in mind is that also spiderbots will only see the cutt-off version ;)

May i ask how you got it to work with gars, this way i can add that feature. I would figure it out myself, however, i do not have GARS installed.

Hm. I suppose there is no way to avoid this... unless i make it somehow so that it allows spiderbots to see full thread by doing an extra if command. However, i just need to figure out if there's already a variable used to detect bots, then i'll adjust it as so.

Also, feel free to click INSTALL if you like/or installed the hack :p

bashy 02-25-2006 06:17 PM

Not if you use the hack that makes them members ;)

Ah yes. It must be because gars uses a postcount number other than 1 :p Glad to see that you have it working.

bashy 02-25-2006 06:26 PM

I m8 ya right there ;)

Ramsesx 02-25-2006 09:49 PM

Thank you for this hack, very nice idea. Would be an advantage if phrases could be possible in the Thread Display Options.

kofoid 02-25-2006 09:54 PM

Is there any way to make this so none of the signatures can be seen?

kofoid 02-25-2006 09:54 PM

Oh AND THIS IS GREAT!!! I just have a bunch of women who don't want their family's pictures "out there"

Rickie3 02-25-2006 10:30 PM

One Request, be able to specify which forums to apply too?

I have some really active forums with good content, then I have forums which I don't care if people read, Anyway we can select which forums to apply it to?

Not pressing but would be a nice to have.

Just installed this is a great Mod.

bashy 02-26-2006 01:32 PM

Yeah i like the sound of that, if it is at all possible.... :)
