:)

Critique welcome :)

The header is quite nice but the style looks incomplete to me. More needs to be done to the tables as they still look default.

I'm getting an error:
Code:

I like it! The only suggestion I would make would be to make your forums fluid like your main site :)

bravokilo 03-25-2006 01:14 AM

Really like the site! The only thing I would change is I would take out all first person references and comments regarding the site itself. Think newspaper or magazine. They do everything they do format and content-wise without fanfare or self-reference. They just do it. Once you start bringing "I" into it it starts looking more and more like a glorified blog, which is NOT what you want.

I think you will have great success with this site, interest is huge and advertising dollars are abundant.

Feature articles from professional writers would work very well here, I would keep a pulse on what the hottest threads are and then seek some writers to submit content. A good way to get inexpensive content is to scour magazines for them, once you find something you think would work on your site, then contact the author and ask him to do a rewrite or condensed version of the article for your site. In the writer's market, you can usually get rewrites for pennies on the dollar, with no risk of infringement. Savvy writers do it all the time.

Looks pretty good Jon.

Just the header is nice but well done. ;)

Jon. 09-07-2006 06:57 PM

Just thought i'd wake this topic up, as i've recently redesigned the homepage, and pretty much everything is different from when i started this...

Triggerhappy 09-07-2006 07:52 PM

Can iask how you got som many posts and members in such a sort space of time?

Still struggling here

Thanks

Jon. 09-08-2006 05:34 PM

I didn't think i had that many

Well, this is the 2nd wipe of the forums, so most of those members have built up since february, and then had to re-register when we had a fresh start. As for the posts, they just sorta built up.

Jon. 09-09-2006 06:56 PM

Well, i named it accel, and then hit a snag when i tried to buy a domain... The problem is, i've now put up with it for 9/10 months, and it would be a ridiculous ammount of effort to go and change the name. We just kinda use Accel as a name, and thecarforum.net as a domain and slogan. The problem that leaves, is that we're very hard to find in google - accel is used by thousands of companies, and putting in "the car forum" brings up a bunch of larger car forums.

As for the flash, it is a bit slow for the first time visitor. It shouldn't be that bad - it's a max of 5 seconds for me, and i'm on 1mb too.

Yeah, the header is a bit busy. It's only been up for a few weeks and already i've designed a non-flash non-dashboard version.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Jon. 09-12-2006 06:09 PM

Just thought i'd bump this so i can get some critique on my new design.

It's not actually online yet - this is my testing area for new styles, so there's absolutely no content apart from the standard joomla stuff (ignore it :p).

I know it's not a forum, but the forum's design is essentially the same (i've got it hidden for everyone but admins).

Jon. 09-13-2006 06:44 PM

Anyone? I'm now ready to launch, and I need some feedback :)

Princeton 09-14-2006 01:22 PM

The flash header is distracting and it takes up a lot of space.
I think a simple header would have suffice.

I suggest removing the top flash.

You do have another flash banner within the body (portal area below the top nav) .. now this looks professional. It's not too much; and it provides valuable information.

I recommend that you grab this whole area (nav and flash) and use that as a header for your forums.
  1. Integrate the designs (portal/forum)
  2. Have your site logo appear on all frames within the flash.
  3. Refine your logo (the one on the second flash looks good; the logo on the first flash looks REALLY bad)

Thanks for the comments, Princeton :)

Right, new design is now up.

Anyone?! :p

Jon. 10-10-2006 04:13 PM

...and bumped again. I changed the homepage a bit.

MRGTB 10-12-2006 06:34 PM

takes to long to load

KSE 10-12-2006 07:15 PM

Looks good.

Gary, 56k? Loads just fine on cable for me.

MRGTB 10-12-2006 07:43 PM

no I'm on a fast ADSL line. about 1mb connection

I have that problem too. In Firefox it pauses for around 15 seconds after loading half the header to do...something...then loads the rest of the page as normal. In IE it simply crashed the browser.

I notice a Java icon in my toolbar now, if your page uses that I wouldn't be surprised if it was the cause.

fsk1290 10-20-2006 02:11 AM

page takes to long to load.........and your forum is all white........ don't like all white......... some stuff on the home page is scattered around a bit too....

Yes, there's a java clock on all pages. I was thinking about getting rid of that, actually. It's strange - I've had no complaints from any of my members about that, and certainly no problems myself. I'll admit that the homepage is a little slow to load, but can you guys just ignore that for a moment and give me some design critique? :(

Right, removed the clock now and replaced it with a flash one. Much quicker to load now :)

Any comments?
