GARS: vb.org installer/release add on

hehe. Its back (and improved). :)

Find yourself hanging around vb.org all day in the release sections simply because you find them so sexy? Wish you could apply that same look with those same tick boxes to your forums? Hold on to your hats because now you can.

With this add on for GARS PRO and GARS LITE, you can create a new type to apply to your forums: the Installs/Release type. With this new fangled functionality you get:
  • Those neat tick boxes
  • Last update, release date, vb version, mod version, etc...
  • Install counter
  • Install/uninstall buttons (that work!)
  • Install counts on forumdisplay (heck, it even lets you know if you have installed it!)
  • The ability for the author to see if someone replying to the thread has installed.
  • Release manager that lets you view all users that have installed your release

What you don't get:
  • A send update function. If there is a screaming need, ill do it when I get time.
  • A list of all your installed stuff on your profile. I may do that if there is a screaming need to.
  • The annoying thing at .org where you have to re-edit your post to put in the version number and such

But wait, theres more! Since this is a GARS module set, you get much much more:
  • Multiple pages
  • GARS modules (i.e. reviews, TOC's, ratings, blahblahblah)
This package is a bit more than just 1 file. It includes a new table, 3 new files and some additional templates. It also includes a product installer that will install these items as well as create a new term set, new type, new template set, register the modules and basically clean your curtains.

Change Log

17.02.06 Updated to 1.5
  • Added a Release Manager page that shows you all users that have installed (you can get there by clicking the install count)
  • Added ability to see which posters have clicked install
  • Fixed a few bugs
17.02.06 Released
To install/upgrade:

Upload all files from the download package to the correct forum location.
Import the product-gars-install.xml file (choosing to overwrite existing install is upgrading)

Edit your postbit template and after
PHP Code:

$post[reputationdisplay

Put
PHP Code:

$post[gars_installed

Toodles, click install and nJoy.

Hellcat 02-21-2006 09:08 AM

WOW, nice! :)

I just checked it out on my local tets install - the phrases don't seem to work....
The GARS phrases show up fine, the Install-Type phrases don't, all blank spaces where text is supposed to be.

Any idea?

[edit]
never mind, I opened and re-saved one of the phrases in the phrase manager and suddenly they appeared. :)

Now checking out if and how this could be used on my forum :D

The Geek 02-21-2006 09:30 AM

Yea, I should have mentioned this in the first post: A couple users have claimed that you need to rebuild languages or as Hellcat mentioned, edit and save a phrase for the languages to be rebuilt.
I have no clue why (it reminds me of installs in the 3.0x days) but if I can find the answer ill sort it ;)

ps. Please click install if you installed it :)

Thanks

Floris 02-21-2006 10:04 AM

This is really cool, great to see this downloadable here and I can use this a few private sites I run!

The feature: A send update function.
Very much wanted, that's how I keep up to date with things I installed here! I hope future releases include it :)

Tnx for sharing!

The Geek 02-21-2006 10:54 AM

Will do Floris. Thanks.

Ill most likely add the feature to be able to email and/or PM. At least as it stands now you can browse everyone that has installed (even if they dont reply in a post)!

redspider 02-22-2006 03:18 AM

Is there any way to convert this to use something other than vB in the posts...Example, instead of the
(vB Version:) couldnt it say something like (Game Type:) and instead of
(Mod Version:) couldnt it say someting like (Game Version:)

On the left in the list,

The reason i ask this is because this is an awesome hack, however, not everyone offers vB Hacks and Mods...This would be great on a game site where downloading games is evident...Just a suggestion and something i would love to have, and would most definately use if it could be used for more than just vB Stuff...Thank you for your help...Be well -

The Geek 02-22-2006 07:16 AM

Very much so Spider. Personally, Im not thathot on the tick boxes or the look - however the goal was to create a mirror of the release system to show that A- it CAN be done via GARS and B- HOW it can be done via GARS.

To address your specific point... the easiest thing would be to edit the GARS_install_ticklist template and change it to whatever you want.

THanks for the kind words everyone. Im pretty chuffed with it. As fars as a potential HOTM, I think I would need pooploads more installs :)

Blackbeard 02-22-2006 11:59 AM

This would be great m8, will be using it, need to mod it myself as i want to use it for browser extensions/ addons

This is the same that i want.
I have a Fireworks website with alot of movies. I have bought the GARS version and installed this hack but i dindt use my brains. I want to change these things to

Date Fireworks Show :
Place Of Fireworks Show :
Company :

And i want to change the install button to Download button where you can download the movie ( 100Mb+_ ) and wich will update the ( Install )download count.

Is this all possible ?
I am a little noob so please when you answer my post give me some examples.
Excuse my bad English.

Tony

The Geek 02-22-2006 04:34 PM

Its totally possible, but I think you are going to require a custom module that would be far easier to do than this. Drop me a line over at thevbgeek.com and ill see what I can do to help you.

I have send you a PM at your forum.

ConKien 02-22-2006 07:54 PM

Even though I don't use this, it seemed like a very nice mod and I'll vote for it if it's in the list of HOTM!

Allan 02-22-2006 08:59 PM

Hey The Geek :)
Very goog job :D

Click Install

a question, how walk the function multipage ?

The Geek 02-22-2006 09:03 PM

[break] or [break=name of page]

I would suggest adding the Table of contents module to the module set (showthread page) if you use it. It makes browsing through multiple pages much easier :)

Nope, but I doubt that would be difficult to do. Good idea.

Thanks for the phrases Allan. Are you saying nothing shows?

Do you have GARS PRO or GARS LITE installed? One of those guys need to be installed BEFORE you install this.

would it be possible to use or add a function which will make it possible to create a database of hacks ?

Not really as an addition to this. That would be a large project in and of itself :(

Allan 02-23-2006 04:27 PM

i understand yes ^^

memorex 02-23-2006 04:29 PM

Awesome System. I love GARS.

For some reason the text didn't show for me either, I went to the admin cp and started clicking save or ok on everything related to see if that would help. Stuff showed up after that.

Could something like this be used like for an event Forum? What I want to do is post an event forum where ppl can click a button for their named to be added to the list and possibly their signature sence their signatures contain their characters name and class etc..

Its a guild forum, and this type of post would be awesome for raid management.

The Geek 02-23-2006 05:50 PM

This couldnt as it is an addon, however something along these lines could be done quite easily. Post exact details of what you would require over in the GARS thread or PM me and Ill take a look at it when I get some time.

Actually, now that I think about it... this would be damn near close as you could get to what you want with little effort!

Anyhoo, post me details of what would be different and ill take a look :D

Ya, looks like you did it right.

Are you only getting a white page? This would imply a template error (i.e. youre missing GARS_install_main). If so, check its there and enable template names in comments via vboptions. Then look at the source and see if somethings up.

You may want to re import the productxml too.

Allan 02-23-2006 07:22 PM

how to remove or modify one of these lines ?

Humm, ok, thanks :)

For example, if i delete this:
PHP Code:

<input type="checkbox" name="custom_supported[$itemid]" <if condition="$values['supported']">checked="checked" </if> />$vbphrase[GARS_supported]<br />

i don't have problem with editing and creating thread after ?

Thats right...I deleted several and it works just fine. However, i think if you want to modify one of those codes, you would do it via phrases...Not sure, but if im not mistaken thats how they are changed.

Deleting to rid some of those checkbox options is safe though -
