vbAdvanced Addon for AboutToday

This is to install an addon to vBAdvanced for AboutToday . It assumes that AboutToday is installed, the RSS Feeds are active, and "How many rows across for $myfeeds variable?" is set to greater than zero.

In vBa CMPS, Add Module - Template.

1. Module Title - Make this whatever you want to display
2. Template to Include: adv_portal_myfeeds
3. Template Content:

<tr>
<td class="$bgclass">
$myfeeds
</td>
</tr>

4. Save it and refresh your vbadvanced index page!

I think you will also like the new feature in AboutToday ver 1.1 where you can turn off the local events since I don't think you use that. It will make your main AboutToday page a cleaner listing of your RSS summaries.

Note - you must install the latest version (at least 1.1 Gold) of AboutToday for the vBa mod to work!

Sooner95 02-19-2006 12:34 AM

ah that would explain why it doesnt work lol time to update.. 1.1

Sooner95 02-19-2006 12:34 AM

Sooner95 02-19-2006 12:43 AM

ok, updated to 1.1 set the myfeeds variable to 3, left column and i get nothing. I get the table to show, but nothing in it. do I have to do a forced update?

EDIT

tried forced update of RSS and got the same thing. Maybe i missed something.

Nrat 02-19-2006 05:20 AM

OK I have everything working right but I want it the display 2 different feeds.

Can you post a screen shot of what the vBa Mod looks like (in the admincp)? Or, PM me the info to look at it directly.

Thx (oh ... fixed my sig, thx again!)

You can display as many feeds as you want but they have to be in the same vBa block.

Sooner95 02-20-2006 11:41 AM

Right, I saw they are working on the forums home page. Would you mind giving me admission to your admincp so I can look at your settings?

Okay, you're set! I forgot to tell you that for each RSS Feed, you need to tell it if it should be included in the $myfeeds variable. (see the attached pic. I mis-labeled the variable as $displaymyfeeds on this screen ... need to fix that but it doesn't impact the operation.)

You vBa page is looking good! - http://www.bulldogbbs.com/

Sooner95 02-21-2006 12:47 PM

Excellent, it works! Thx!

Good god, thank you! I've been scratching my head for two days on how to get About Today to work with vBA 2.1.0, and finally did a search this evening on your other About Today thread for vBA integration help.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

What $myfeeds variable are you using? Have you assigned any feeds to that variable?

Blaine0002 08-03-2006 01:39 PM

Okay, you are good to go! http://www.gentendo.com/index.php

The problem was that the template was created for your default style but that wasn't inherited by the Kirsch-fixed style. I created the template for that style and all is well!:)

p.s. I tweaked the feeds a bit too while I was in there so that you really get a 3 column display.

Blaine0002 08-03-2006 10:06 PM

sweet

Blaine0002 08-04-2006 01:56 AM

I don't understand what you mean. Can you give me an example or a screenshot?

Blaine0002 08-04-2006 03:37 AM

meh i figured it out and turned up with this http://www.gentendo.com/index.php
try clicking on one of the news articles, that was what i was trying to do:P

OH and BTW in your cache_template plugin, use a better template system, the way you have it now is terrible.

How can i put each news article into a seperate box instead of all into 1?

Well, I don't mind constructive comments but you need to provide more detail about why it's "terrible".

Blaine0002 08-05-2006 01:28 PM

Well im not sureif that plugin is being used by somthing else, but for the portal i would reccommend you using an actual module and templates, this way users can customize the overall look and feel.
Ill see if i can fix somthing up for you in a bit.

Now that I really look at it, I'm not sure that the template that is merged at the beginning of it is used for anything! I think I was testing it and forgot to delete the code!

Blaine0002 08-06-2006 09:03 PM

yeah. so it would be much easier as a module?

I would like to do the same thing, so that the links output to my affiliate links. Please let me know how you did this. Thanks.

dropbass 09-19-2006 05:33 PM

dropbass 09-19-2006 06:11 PM

Have you assigned any of the feeds to the variables that can be displayed in vba? For example, in admincp -> AboutToday -> RSS Feeds, you will need to have "Include this Feed in $myfeeds variable?" set to "Yes" for each feed that you want to display when $myfeeds is used in vba.

If you need more help, pm me your site url with an admin login and password and I'll take a look at it for you.

You are now up and running. You were really close! You just needed to set "How many rows across for $myfeeds variable?" (under admincp -> AboutToday -> Settings) to 1.
