Would be nice to have a hack that would allow a watermark placed on all uploaded images, when they are uploaded.

Theres one problem with watermarking images. It seems only jpg/jpeg images can be watermarked, and not gifs. (which I think alot more people like using. :disappointed:) See the examples here:

I don't see a point in making this unless I can watermark bmp, gif, jpeg, jpg, and png. :(

Convert the gif image to jpeg prior to watermarking..

How do you go abouts converting the gif image via PHP? I've yet to try this.

Using ImageMagick (free) you can do the conversions easily on the fly.
