Usertitles

How are the user titles (eg Coder) calculated?

I know a similar question has been asked before and the answer was that what counts is the hack number and isntall count.
However, this doesn't seem accurate. I've seen Coders with less hacks + installs than members, advanced coders with less hacks + installs than coders and so on.

I think we deserve a more accurate answer :)

Xenon 01-24-2006 04:53 PM

nope

we do not provide the exact ranking requirements for each title ;)

you can see that answer in every thread about that topic ^^

Lea Verou 01-24-2006 05:02 PM

I didn't ask for the exact details, just what parameters count. For instance, does it count if you are a member for a long time? Or if you click install on your hacks?
Things like that...

Xenon 01-24-2006 05:06 PM

just hacks and install of your hacks.

but not every hack really counts right now ;)

Lea Verou 01-24-2006 05:09 PM

Please please please tell us which ones count the most!! :nervous: :o
It must be extensions or plugins...
And styles-template mods must be the ones that count less I guess...
Am I right???

[high]* Guest210212002 wishes he had the coder title from his one released uber-hack. ;)[/high]

I've seen people become coders with just one hack so don't leave hope! :p

Paul M 01-24-2006 05:54 PM

... and I still don't understand why it's a secret, it just fosters the us v them attitude.

You cannot force people to install a hack so what does it matter

Daniel 01-24-2006 05:54 PM

From what I've noticed is that when someone releases their first plugin, their user title gets changed to "Coder"

Exactly!!!

Xenon 01-24-2006 06:53 PM

@Paul: and i still don't understand why it's important to know ;)

it will be changed in the future, as i want another system , but more on that topic ones i know exactly what to change ;)

amykhar 01-24-2006 07:02 PM

The point is to reward people for their actual behavior, I think, and not to encourage people to act a certain way to earn a title.

nexialys 01-24-2006 08:07 PM

i don't personally care about my title... i'd like my old "member" tag to be placed.. or let me personalise mine... i hate to be a Advanced Coder!

Lea Verou 01-24-2006 08:36 PM

Btw Amy I was always curious about that "Prima Donna" title of yours... Is it something like Master Coder or something else? :o

nexialys if you don't like it can you give it to me please?? :p :p :p

Xenon 01-24-2006 09:10 PM

Amy has a personal title, as she belongs to vb.org ;)

Human nature, we want to know :) To reverse it, why is it important we don't know ;)

Xenon 01-24-2006 09:44 PM

human nature

we like the users guessing wrong all the time ;)

Guest210212002 01-24-2006 09:54 PM

[high]* Guest210212002 thinks he should have the title of "Writer of How-To's that nobody reads.. Or maybe just "Lazy Sod". ;)[/high]

TruthElixirX 01-24-2006 09:58 PM

I think add-on modifications don't count...

hmm... Wehre did I see that. I think someone posted the formula used once... I will find it... >.<

*looks around uneasily*

I can't find that post. I think it was by either Revan or boofo. He had it in php format and it showed that add-ons and something else were excluded from counting. I think ti was pre vB 3.5.x though.

calorie 01-24-2006 09:58 PM

Michelle, try releasing one more Code Hack or Plugin. ;)
Code:

Coder: 1 Code Hack or Plugin, and 10 Installs

Advanced Coder: 10 Code Hacks or Plugins, and 300 Installs

Master Coder: 20 Code Hacks or Plugins, and 1000 Installs

Caveat: these numbers are guesstimates

Coder user titles don't really mean anything, especially given the disparity between number of downloads and number of installs, even after accounting for hack updates, curiosity, etcetera.

The counterargument may be that everyone is in the same boat, so it's still some type of 'across the board' measure, but it isn't accurate. Same goes for HotM, but that's another thread. ;)

Lea Verou 01-24-2006 10:55 PM

calorie I have 571 installs and 14 hacks but I'm still a coder... :/

Tony G 01-25-2006 12:12 AM

Template mods don't count, that's probably why.

nexialys 01-25-2006 12:41 AM

coders title doesn't mean anything for the coders themselves... we usually don'T care, until we race between each others for fun...

the problem comes from the members, the visitors, the noobs... they think that as i'm an Advanced Coder, i know everything and i'm their slave...

i think that these titles can be droped and we have the usual ones, related to posts... "1900 posts, he is addict and need drugs to prevent from posting more spams"...

we already have a lot of details showing that we're coders anyway.

Tony G 01-25-2006 09:20 AM

You know everything and you are my slave

That's wrong calorie :p

I believe I know the exact (or rough) numbers for Master Coder, but I won't tell you :p

You already did here unless it's been changed. ;)

Princeton 01-25-2006 02:32 PM

There is a trust and credibility factor that people assume with these titles ... in most cases, these assumptions are false.

I would prefer a system where STAFF members "vote" on member's usertitle upgrade ... that is of course when a member reaches a certain criteria.

eg. instead of automatically upgrading usertitle the system provides a list to staff ... ONLY when 80% of staff approves of "coder" will the system upgrade their title

A system likes this is rewarding and will say A LOT MORE to the community regarding said member.

Also, a member will have to "earn" their title by sharing, advocating profesionlism, and displaying the right conduct regardless of circumstances. This would be a lot better than an automatic system based on installs, time here, etc.

Oh yea...
There should additional titles. Since the merger with vbulletintemplates, vB.org has become more than just a "hack" site.

For example, some members are excellent with "styles" while others are great at coding. How about those who have proving that they can do both?

@chris: nope, you don't know them :p

I'm sure that when mine swapped to Master it had something to do with clocking up my 4000th install.

It's a heck of a lot better than when it was based on postcounts.
