Auto-Save Posts (Gmail style)

After switching to Gmail, the feature I love most on there has to be the auto save draft feature. If you dont know what that is.. well basically, as you are typing up an email, it automatically saves the email in case you press the back button or you lose the browser some how.

I run a role playing forum, and a lot of people type up very long stories and they sometimes hit the back button on accident losing the post they were typing. I know it can easily be created with a simple AJAX function to save the post like every minute or something.

I wanted to know if anyone wanted to take a wack at it. If not, I'll try it out, but I just dont have much time at the moment.

Hope you consider this! It can be very useful! Thanks.

Bump! Someone make this mod PLEASE!

marksman1 08-06-2006 04:51 PM

I will septuple bump this. Such a function would be great. I can't tell you the number of times I have lost lengthy posts for any number of dumb reasons, many self-inflicted.

Having a draft state, and the ability to auto-save would be awesome.

bump for a great mod

Before someone makes this, be noted that Firefox keeps typed text in those situations (most of time).

Depends on the version, possibly. But not everyone uses FF either. The majority still remains IE, and many are also using others such as Sufari and Opera.

If this mod is made, rest assured it will be well appreciated by the masses.

With AJAX becoming so big, it will probably be easier then before to make too.

trinigamers 08-07-2006 10:01 AM

yup yup!
someone make it plz!

Wired1 08-07-2006 10:27 PM

I know what AJAX is but we have mentioned AJAX twice in the thread before you posted. I'm just confused as to what you are inferring.

WeArab 08-11-2006 04:02 PM

It would be great add-on ;)

smapdi 03-01-2007 12:14 AM

Yes - please mod to save drafts and ajax auto-save-as-draft.

solinarius 03-06-2007 08:05 PM

Great idea!
Someone :>

Can someone explain how you get the email back once you've accidentally lost it? Auto-saving a post every so often wouldn't be difficult, it wouldn't even need to be AJAX. But actually managing the saved post...that's rather more tricky.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......

I'd like to claim this one for my own, I'm actively working on it. Just a few small problems to overcome...

Edit: Large problems, heh.

What do you mean it would be difficult to manage it? I think it is quite the contrary.

I have actually setup something very similar to this on my site already using no plugins/hacks at all.

I just made a forum called "Drafts" which a user can post into. I setup the permissions so that the user can only see his own threads/posts. Then I gave the user the permissions to delete or move their own threads. I also shut of the search indexing for that forum.

It has worked out really well and a lot of my users use it and comment on how much they like it and ask me what the plugin I used it called lol. The only thing it doesn't do is auto-save the posts- that is that part that needs a plugin.

As for keeping the mod clean and simple, if it were me I would have the plugin create a forum which is not visible and just use permissions to setup the forum like I explained. Then you could add a link in the User CP or even a popup link in the new thread template that would display the contents of that hidden drafts forum. The user would only see their own posts and threads so to the end user it would be a seemless method.

It's a place to start anyways, I'd love to code it but my focus is on a much larger project right now. If you want to see how I set up the drafts forum like I explain, my site is http://forums.theoverclocked.com

Good luck, I can't wait to see how it turns out. If you get stuck and need some help feel free to shoot me a PM ;)

RedTyger 03-08-2007 11:25 AM

Ok so there were a lot of reasons why I couldn't get it to work, but now I know how to transfer data between iframe and parent it looks like I've got it.

Hold that thought...
