gimp (open source @ sourceforge) can open and work with psd files I believe.

GIMP would work, but it has some limitations as to what it is capable of. If you're strapped for cash, it's definately an option to consider though.

IMHO Gimp is MUCH worse than Photoshop. Especially the fact that it's tools are in totally separate windows.

There is a plugpin to make it take the cosmetics of photoshop.

Oh really? I didn't knew that! :) Nice to hear, it increases my possiblity of switching to Linux (although the possibility is still small, I prefer to switch once to MacOS and for good ;)).

What about a plugin to add the industry-standard functionality?

You're definately better off switching to Mac OS X instead of Linux - After experimenting with both, I found Linux to be a total nightmare to use.

Do doubt on that! Personally I find Linux to be very "draft" (that's probably not the right word but hey - english is not my native language! :p) whereas MacOS is much more professional. I have Suse 9.3 in my PC but I rarely - if ever - use them.
Especially the greek translation in various linux environments is just TERRIBLE. It's so bad that you can hardly understand what each settin/button/menu item/etc is about!
But apple computers are just sooo expensive :( :( :(

A Mac Mini is $499...refurbished ranges from $379 to $4-something.
