how many test users do u use ??

Hey all, I have 2 questions for some of the webmasters out here.

I'm sure most of you make one test user to test some mods maybe, or permissions. ? At times I have, all the users are very obvious tho, like testuser test1 test2 ect... and any post that are mad also look like testin just " ssssssss" "testtttttt"
"asdfas" usually just a few keys to make the post..

so here is my question, 1st. have you made test accounts ? and they obvious that they were for testing.

and 2nd. if you have made these that weren't knows as test id " test1" testuser" ect... do u use them to make your forum look active ? suck as post as nameX, nameY, nameZ and have a different post style for each ? like a different personally for each ?

i don't, i just use for testing features, but recently i seen a site ( I'm not naming names, not trying to give them traffic ) but this owner has 5-7 id's that were made id's but where posted as different ppl. I was pretty shocked that someone would do this and it makes up 90% of the sites post :O just wondering if its a common thing ? I had never heard of it b4

Jenta 11-28-2005 01:36 AM

Not common. Perhaps they also talk to themselves when they are alone in a room. I use one test account and its called test. When I am done testing, I ban the account. I delete the test posts if it involves posting.

Brandon Sheley 11-28-2005 02:01 AM

ah maybe,, but I'm not trying to make fun of someone or a site or anything. but i was wondering if anyone else did it.
i usually merged all my test account into one id when I'm done..

Zachariah 11-28-2005 03:58 AM

No, I use online members via. IM and experment with them. Also, not that I have seen.

PennylessZ28 11-28-2005 04:11 AM

I use real people, becuase non techie people are the best to use, becuase they always manage to find stuff and do things a person with knowledge knows how to avoid.

I don't know how, but they just always find the bugs.

Brandon Sheley 11-28-2005 05:35 AM

ya, that would be great, my forum isn't active enough for me to catch a member online...lol

In other words, you look for people who know how to break things, huh? ;)

I just use current members... and no, I don't talk to myself on my own forum... but at night, in bed, I hug myself becuase I'm all alone and... *cough* wait, wrong topic. :p

Lea Verou 11-29-2005 02:08 AM

I have one test user that is quite obvious from it's nickname that it's a test user but it's nothing like "test", "testuser" etc, I can't recall the translation of the greek word I use to tell you, lol. :p
It has no posts, I never needed that, it only lurks around when I need to test something :p

peterska2 11-29-2005 02:12 AM

I've got a test account, funnily enough called TEST, but on occassion I also log in as my BOT and use that, especially if it involves posting.

Brandon Sheley 11-29-2005 02:42 AM

ah,, so it's pretty odd for an admin to use these test accounts to actually carry on conversations then ?? I thought so, even if to make your site " look " active, how long can you carry this on ? If I had to carry on one conversation with myself for a year I'd go nuts.. the site i seen has over 7 different id's by the one admin.. this is just crazy

It's not right for your members to do something like that.
I know an admin that has multiple accounts on his site and carries on conversations with himself and doesn't admit it. Pathetic.

Vtec44 11-29-2005 03:27 AM

I have a test member with the user name Test. This account is for me to mostly test forum permissions and what not. No, I don't have any other accounts to make my forum look active. I was lucky enough to start a forum with a few people on it. Oh boy was it dead back then :D

i agree,, BTW these weren't my members,, not sure if you, or i, misread,, just want to clarify this isn't on my board

ps.. i wonder if the admin your talking about is the same one I'm talking about :surprised: he is pretty pathetic :squareeyed: and is a reg on vb.org and vb.com

Chris M 11-29-2005 11:19 AM

I generally have two users, testuser and testuser2 - Mostly to test multi-usergroup functionality of hacks - Once I'm done I usually ban them - I move their posts to a private test forum and be done with it :)

Chris

EricaJoy 11-29-2005 11:24 AM

I have one test user, to do same as Chris said. Also to make sure people in certain usergroups can't see things they aren't allowed to. As far as the admins that talk to themselves? Pathetic. Thats like the one hack request I saw recently where someone was asking to always show 300 random members online, no matter if they are or not. Something about investors or some such. Why fake the usage/traffic? I never understood that.

Paul M 11-29-2005 11:34 AM

All my testing is done on a test forum, which all our members are free to join (we also use it as a status forum to post updates if the main one fails for some reason).

I don't think so... The one I'm talking about is reg here and in vb.com but hass no posts but he's greek and I doubt you're talking for a greek guy.

Brandon Sheley 11-30-2005 02:29 PM

nope, the person I'm thinking of has lots of post on vb.org and vb.com

i also use my accounts like chris said,, basically to test group permissions and such..

a hack that shows 300 guest online no matter what :))
i missed that one, im intrigued who post this, might just have to search for this thread now..lmao

seems pointless to me tho ? the only reason i want guest or members on my site ( other then to share info ) is for them to click my ads :nervous:
and i don't think fake guest would do this..hehe

Andrew 11-30-2005 02:42 PM

I have a couple of computer illiterate people that I frequently have test things for me. What I've found is that if they can't manage to break it, then it's usually safe to be used in a live setting.

Brandon Sheley 12-14-2005 04:15 AM

so u think it's pretty uncommon for an admin to make 5-7 fake account and then post back and forth between those accounts ?
to make it look like his/her site is active

James B 12-14-2005 09:03 AM

I use one account, I think it's actually 'Test Account', but is on invisible mode. I leave it logged in all the time on Internet Explorer, and my account always logged in on Firefox. I only make test posts in the test forum, maybe I should ban it when I've finished using it...

Oblivion Knight 12-14-2005 10:44 AM

I use a single test user named "Test Account".

Always useful for testing out things concerning usergroup permissions and such.

Lee 12-20-2005 01:18 PM

I have a single account I use for testing as well. Usergroup permissions and different hacks are what it is used for when it comes to testing things out.

Brandon Sheley 02-18-2006 04:11 AM

I use one account, but i usually delete it after I'm done,,at least lately that's what I've done..

I've actually seen sites promoting that its common for a forum admin to use 2-3 user name and post when your board is starting off..

I just think this is misleading to any member that may be lucky enough to be with you at the start of your board,,, imagine how you would feel if a person you have been talking/posting with on a site, ended up being the admin, just under a different user name :O

more comments would be great,, I some small sites doing this, and this is why I originally posted this, but since then I've seen big site admins suggesting that this wouldn't be to horrible to start your site.. ( posted on other good sites )

the question that come to me is,, when do u stop posting as the lie ?
