Google Analytics Registration Goal Plugin

Google Analytics Registration Goal Plugin
This plugin adds unique page names to the steps of the registration process so you can track registration as a Goal utilizing Google Analytics.

History
Jan 29, 2006
-- v1.0.1 Beta 2 Release. Removes duplicate goal URL and updates step counts.

Jan 28, 2006
-- v1.0.1 Beta 1 Release. Adds modifications for COPPA and Deny registration for users under 13

Nov 27, 2005
-- Initial Beta Release

Requirements
You must have a Google Analytics account

This does not work if you have turned on URL rewrites via .htaccess with programs such as subdreamer and vb seo.

If you use this plugin, click Install :)

Dan 11-27-2005 04:38 PM

Nice idea :D

Ted S 11-27-2005 06:16 PM

I was just about to start on one of these.... great job! Thanks.

PixelFx 11-27-2005 08:16 PM

I tried to sign up but they closed signups :(

Jacqueline 11-27-2005 10:08 PM

@Dan Thanks. I hope you enjoy it!

@Ted I was surprised someone else had not done it already. If you see something else you think should be added, shoot it my way.

@PixelFx Go ahead and signup. They'll put you on the waiting list.

RetroDreams 11-29-2005 03:12 AM

Does this work on 3.5 or strictly 3.5.1?

Jacqueline 11-29-2005 08:17 AM

I don't have 3.5 to test on, but I believe it will work on either version. As long as the hooks are there in 3.5, there won't be a problem.

Snake 11-29-2005 11:41 AM

Looking good. :)

-=Sniper=- 11-29-2005 11:47 AM

its working :) good work

Pardon me for being stupid, but can you please answer this:

http://www.example.com/funnel_register/signup.html

I should change example.com to my domain, correct? Also, if my forums are not in the domain root, I should also add the subfolder, correct?

For the first question, Yes. You should change example.com to your domain.

For the second, you should not add the subfolder. It may work if you do, but Google's instructions say to show it this way so it looks like it is off the root of your domain.

kall 12-02-2005 04:06 PM

Just like that? or do we need our /forums/ directory in that path too?

Also, some of the plugins seem to be disabled by default, is that correct?

Just like that is correct. Replace www.example.com with your domain name. You do not need to put your forum directory, and Google's instructions are to show the funnel as coming off your root. I expect it would work if you included your forums directory as this is basically just a made-up path for reporting purposes, but I haven't tried it.

Yes. I currently have two plugins disabled while under beta. They hook into additional areas that may be used based on your registration configuration. If you do a test registration on your system and view the source of each registration page, you can verify that a funnel_register shows on each page. As long as it does, you can safely delete the two disabled ones. If you find any pages missing one, then most likely we'll need to enable one or both of the disabled plugins.

thebassman 12-03-2005 08:56 PM

I can't seem to get it to work. It installed fine, but I get the error message from Google: "Goal Creation failed. Please verify and try again. If you continue to have problems, please contact our support team." Here's a screen shot of what I see... maybe I missed something?

Jacqueline 12-03-2005 09:03 PM

I don't see anything wrong in your screenshot. Double check the portion of your http://www.example.com/funnel_register/pagename.html on each line and make sure there are no typos hiding. I do not believe it actually checks to see if the pages exist when you make the goal.

thebassman 12-03-2005 09:30 PM

Hmmm... no typos. Should the page http://www.photographycorner.com/fun...e_account.html actually go somewhere?

Jacqueline 12-03-2005 10:43 PM

No, the page is made up specifically for registration.

thebassman 12-03-2005 10:45 PM

Hmmm... any other ideas why it's not working then? :speechless:

I'm looking at Google right now. There are some more settings further down the page. What settings do you have here?

Goal
(see above)

Case sensitive

Match type

Goal value

thebassman 12-03-2005 10:58 PM

Goal
(see above): (not editable) http://www.photographycorner.com/fun...e_account.html Registration

Case sensitive: checked

Match type: Head Match

Goal value: blank/$1

Jacqueline 12-03-2005 11:03 PM

Try changing your goal value to just the number 1. No word blank. No slash. No dollar sign.
The only other setting you have different from mine is the case sensitivity. I have it turned off.

thebassman 12-03-2005 11:06 PM

Grr... took case sensitivity off. Same error. Changed goal value to 1, still same error. I tried every combination with those last options, still same error.

Jacqueline 12-03-2005 11:14 PM

Next step verify that Step 5 through Step 10 have nothing in them. After that, I recommend you blank and retype the URLs in case there is something you are just not seeing in there. The URL itself doesn't have to be valid, but there may be a check for http:// at the beginning.

This is what they should be:
Goal URL: http://www.photographycorner.com/fun...e_account.html
Step 1: http://www.photographycorner.com/fun...er/signup.html
Step 2: http://www.photographycorner.com/fun...ster_form.html
Step 3: http://www.photographycorner.com/fun...ber_added.html
Step 4: http://www.photographycorner.com/fun...e_account.html

Jacqueline 12-03-2005 11:24 PM

I put the settings above into a domain for my account, using copy shortcut to get the full URL path. Google accepted it without a problem. If you want, grant my google account the ability to login and look at your account and I'll be happy to check it out. faewen at g mail dot c o m

telc 12-04-2005 03:40 AM

Does anyone know when google analytics is going to allow signups? Seems they closed registration.

Not sure what was going on before, but I started again, and it worked. ;) Either Google had a brain cramp before, or I did. :P Thanks for all the help... great mod! :D

Any idea what you changed? I'm having the same issue.

thebassman 12-04-2005 05:51 AM

Closed my browser and went back in... that's about it, actually. Try logging out and logging back in, maybe?

dreamer81 12-04-2005 10:53 AM

They have said they will allow signups as their system allows it. The last time I checked, they let you put your name on the waiting list.

I'm so glad to hear it worked! I was really scratching my head trying to figure out what was wrong as everything looked right.

When you use Google analytics, it lets you keep track of conversions. The problem tracking a new member conversion in vBulletin is that all the pages throughout the registration process are register.php. What this does is create a fake URL that shows up on each page as a user registers so you can keep track of the full registration "funnel" (Google's term).

Nope.

I've tried everything else that was suggested in the thread, too.

Can you post a screenshot of your Google page? Also, if you add my google account, I can take a look at it for you that way.

BlackHawk1994 12-16-2005 01:46 AM

I'm using 3.5.2 and its not generating unique urls. I suspect this might have something to do with me running vbseo which has url rewrite rules.

Jacqueline 12-19-2005 12:25 AM

I haven't used VBSEO, but it shouldn't interfere. This plugin doesn't generate unique URLs that you will see in the address bar of your browser. To verify it is working, you need to look at the source code. Go through your registration process, and on each page, view the source. Look for the URL with funnel_register. If it is there, then it is working and Google Analytics will pick it up.

http://www.nzboards.com/forums/register.php .. it's there in the source, but not one conversion has been picked up since I installed. :(

Kall,
I just signed in today and saw your post. Did Google start picking up your data yet, or are you still having problems?
