Thanksgiving
OK, I know it's not till Thursday 24th but I've got a couple of questions that I hope someone can help me out with.
Basically, my folks are planning on having a Thanksgiving dinner this year as such a lot has happened this year that we have a lot to be thankful for. Mum suggested it to me the other day and so I said that we might as well do it on Thanksgiving as it's coming up. So here's my questions.
So all you Americans out there, I'm counting on you. |
1.) Other food stuffs like potatoes, vegetables, gravy, and of course non-edibles like plates, knives, forks and other related items (i.e. placemats lalala)
2.) It's an American holiday - Something to do with giving thanks to their forefathers or something (I'm probably wrong:p) 3.) Don't do it - That'd make it special ;) Chris |
So is it a bit like a Christmas dinner then?
|
Yeah, basically it's just like Christmas dinner..without the presents.
|
Or the copious amounts of alcohol :D

And the first Thanksgiving didn't even have turkey. Turkey didn't start until the 1940s I think.

As for the fixin's, most of the time we have the following: Mashed potatoes Gravy Corn (I like creamy, most of the time we do both the non-on the cob kinds) Green Beans Yams Stuffing sweet potatos Baked apples cranberry sauce Black eyed peas CornBread biscuits (< a southern past time for every meal ;)) Now, you also have to have something to eat after the main meal. Most of the time any type of cake or pie is fine. We always make pumpkin pie and pecan pie. Also my step dad cooks up some deer meat most of the time, although not many people eat it (my mom's side is picky about food..). Lots of cooking, but worth it! :) |
Wonderful. Thanks a lot guys.
Now to make the shopping list! |
mmmm...Brad...your post is making me HUNGRY! lol
@Peterska2...the best way to prepare a turkey is deep fried in a specialty cooker...if you've never had it prepared that way before you would be in for a major treat :) |

In my house the thanksgiving meal consists of Roasted Turkey, Roasted Ham, Mashed Potatoes, Turkey Stuffing, Gravy, Green Bean Casserole, Cranberry Sauce, Candied Yams, Fruit Salad, Bread Rolls. We also have pies afterward. These include Apple, Pumpkin and Banana Cream. I prefer Sweet Potato and/or Pecan pie on occasion but no one else likes them.
The turkey gets prepared the night before and usually goes in the oven by 3 a.m. and is ready by 2 p.m. at the latest depending on weight. The total meal is a group effort and spread out among 3 houses. Everyone contributes to the meal in the family. Before eating, we go around the table and each person has to say one thing they are grateful for, even if they had the worst year. Afterwards, we eat leftovers for a week. |

I presume Corn is Sweetcorn... Chris |

We just call them yams, I was refering to Candied Yams. Yes Corn = Sweetcorn.

Yams are not sweet potatoes although look very much like it, and both are tubers. Yams have pointy ends (look like 12 inch orange home rolled cigars!)
Yams taste like a cross between potatoes and pumpkin, but much sweeter... to me at least. |
